I replaced an existing old 40 gallon water heater with this Rheem 29 gallon one myself. The job was only difficult due to the old non-standard plumbing in place that my old water heater hooked up to. I replaced most everything including the recommended gas line, added a gate valve to shut off the cold water, and a ball gas valve for code compliance. This water heater went in and connected right up once I added 3/4" fittings. I had an issue getting the heater to register that the pilot light was lit. I called customer service and they told me when I pressed the ignition button a few times to hold in the black control knob in at the same time, and when I could hear what sounded like gas flowing to turn the knob to the low setting. I followed that direction and the water heater fired right up. After an hour I ran two loads in the washing machine, washed a load of dishes, and took a shower with no shortage of regulated hot water coming out about 120 degrees. I have had no issues and the unit has run fine for the past week, its so quiet I can hardly hear it running when the burner ignites a real improvement over my old one. Bought from Home Depot.

Rated 2 out of 5Â by DIYer Beware - Faulty "STATUS" Indicator Light
Installation was not difficult. Problem with Lighting the water heater. Repeatedly followed instructions but "STATUS" indicator light did not blink indicating ignition. Several calls to Rheem Technical Service had them insisting it was poor gas pressure. Gas & Electric service came immediately and gas pressure was perfect and he lit heater. The problem was nonworking status light. Again called Rheem and the part is out of stock for at least two weeks.
(Also, three heaters at our local Home Depot all had dented tops.)

Rated 2 out of 5Â by Tandreas Bad TRD device 5 days without hot water!
Have yet to get mine working. I installed it on a Friday, pilot would not light so a tech had to come out and it had a broken Combustion Shut-off device (TRD) He can not carry them because it is a safety device and had to order one. I won't have hot water until Tuesday! Not happy about that. The tech said he has seen 5 of these heaters with this problem in the last several weeks and all have been from Home Depot. Could be a shipping/handling problem. There was no damage to the cardboard box whatsoever and no apparent damage to the unit. The tech said it was installed correctly with adequate ventilation and vent was not blocked. Gas pressure was perfect. No reason for it to fail but it did.

After working fine for four months we suddenly had no hot water. I called in a service tech. He found that the Combustion Shut-off Device (TRD) had triggered. It's a tiny glass bulb for safety purposes. If "ANYTHING" makes it unhappy, it breaks and shuts-off the heater. Nothing around the water heater had changed in the four months it had been working. Now here's the REALLY bad part. The service tech could not get a replacement TRD. He had me call Rheem to have them ship me one. Rheem told me that part is NOT REPLACEABLE. It's a little glass bulb the size of an auto turn signal bulb. How could that not be replaceable? Government regulations Rheem told me. So for that little, tiny part the brand new water heater is NOT REPAIRABLE!!! Here's the REALLY, REALLY bad part. Now I have to remove the water heater and return it to Home Depot for an exchange. It was only four months ago that I was changing out the water heater; now I have to do it all again. I don't know about you but it's not something I care to do every four months. I plan to get a store credit instead of an exchange of another Rheem water heater. I'll be buying some other brand!
