I'm replacing a 30 gal 3500 watt element on a 20amp breaker. Could breaker be ok if u put 3500 watt elements in this 1.

Asked by: Jesse
Yes the 20 amp breaker will be fine as long as you are using 3500 Watt elements. Please see attached link for recommended over current protection: http://www.rheem.com/docs/FetchDocument.aspx?ID=5182d228-9f07-4ca8-bc23-5c50dbcf3112

I currently have a 40 gal hot water heater w/ a 240 volt connection. I am not sure of my amps, but the Rheem guide suggests the breaker for my 240 volt connection is most likely 20 amps (your pdf). So--assuming I have a 20 amp breaker---can this 30 gallon Rheem with dual 3800 watt elements replace my old single element 4500 watt hot water heater--or is there some trick here I am not aware of? Like--it is 3800 watts x 2 elements= 7600 watts? So i need a 30 amp breaker and heavier wiring--because i will be running 7600 watts? What should I look for on the label of my old single element hot water heater to determine if this 3800 watt "dual element" is the correct replacement? And--who is in the best position to make this determination-----a plumber--or an electrician--meaning---whom should I consult first? Call the electrician first to inspect the electrical panel/box?
Asked by: Alex
This water heater will only have one heating element active at a time when heating, so the total wattage is 3,800. With 3,800 watt heating elements using 240 volts we would recommend a double pole 25 amp breaker with 10 gauge wiring. In regards to setting up the breaker and wiring it would be best to speak with a local electrician with knowledge of any relevant local codes and regulations.

Performance 30 Gal. Tall 6 Year 3800/3800-Watt Elements Electric Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 749.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from QUALITY!! I debated for months which water heater to invest in. I have remodeled homes for over 40 years and installed many heaters. The new Rheem I just installed in my own home is solid! The fact that I also received an insulation cover was an added bonus not often included with other brands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hot Water !!! I had to buy this to replace my last hot water heater, that was also a Rheem. It had lasted 22 years! I hope this one does too. It's working great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install I have Multiple Sclerosis so when things go wrong around the house, I sort of flip out a little bit. I am the consummate handyman and have never used anyone for any service of any kind. But as I lose mobility and energy, it has come to pass that I've had to use contractors. I only needed help getting it put into place and 15 minutes later I was installed. Very nice temperature at the factory setting as it is good and hot but you can tolerate it if you get your hands under it when doing dishes or something. Very nice, industrial looking unit. Your quality shows at least initially. Check back with me in 18 years which is how long my last Rheemglass unit lasted!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As advertised I made this purchase about a month ago to replace a Rheem of a similar model that had been in service for at least 19 or 20 years. The house had been vacant for about 10. On visual inspection inside the old tank there was corrosion and sediment with questionable water clearity. The inspection took place when replacing both supply and hot water piping a few months earlier. My discomfort kept eating at me about the sediment until I bought the new heater. The physical size is identical, with duplicate wiring and plumbing connections. This may be the last traditional tank heater as I am hearing the manufacturs are soon making "only on demand systems or some call tank-less systems."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install I bought this unit 2 weeks ago and installed it myself together with my fiancee. I was very nervous to do it since neither of us have done anything close to installing a water tank before, but after getting a lot of advise and researching, I was amazed how smoothly the entire process went. The tank comes well packaged, the cardboard box has convenient slots so 2 people can easily carry it to the designated place and once hooked up, it heated up the water in less than 30 min. We could not believe we have hot water already! Seems well built and durable, so far we are very happy customers.
