I bought and installed this water heater at the end of June 2014. It went in easily and worked fine for those first five months. Unfortunately this past weekend, the water heater began tripping the breaker. I used a multi meter to test the heating elements and got a reading of 12 (normal) on the lower element and 195 (NOT normal) on the upper unit. Being that this heater is only 5 months old, I called the number to make a warranty claim. They told me it was the heating element and they would overnight a new one to me. Three days later, the heating element came and we installed the new one. The old one was completely corroded and burnt up even though it is only five months old. After doing all of this, the water heater is still tripping the breaker. The warranty is basically useless. Even though it is less than a year since purchase and installation, they will only send parts for what the problem may be and not pay for labor to fix it. At this point, it will be cheaper to replace the water heater with a non-Rheem brand than it would be to call someone to come out and look at it.

My daughter bought this unit for her home which has 6 occupants...she said she never ran out of hot water using it. Based on her recommendation, I bought it and had a non-professional male friend install it. I had hot water in no time and the system has been running well since then. I love the size also...It did not take up much space in the corner on my garage. If you have flushed your old unit, be sure to unscrew the cap off the end of each facet and clean the filter/screen. This action will remove sediment in the water pipes. The best part about this unit is the price. I think it is a great value. I too recommend this product to anyone who need one.

This is a good tank for the money. With a few tweaks, it can be made into a very good tank. That said, If you want a great water tank, get a Bradford-White (the Mercedes Benz of tanks) but it will cost you $600 vs $238.00.
Forget about the 6/9/12 warranty issue. A water heater is basically a water heater. They pro-rate the replacement and by the time you pay someone to install the new tank, there is no benefit. Sure, high-end tanks have better anode rods and more bells and whistles, but.....
Here's a few ideas to get more bang-for-the-buck.
Take out the heating elements that come with tank and throw them away. They are junk. Purchase (2) Camco Stainless replacement heating elements and install them on the new tank. They are $11 a piece and hanging on the rack right above where the water heaters are displayed. Also, purchase a brass drain valve and install it on the new tank in place of the plastic valve. It costs $7 and is hanging on the rack in the same place. For $29 you now have a 12 year heavy duty tank.
Lastly, remember not to do any soldering near the hot and cold inlets on the top of the tank. They contain plastic parts and if you melt the plastic you ruin the tank. Do your soldering on the workbench and then screw the nipples on. AND.. a very important tip, any screw-on fittings need to use Teflon tape AND great white pipe dope applied on top of the Teflon tape.
Teflon tape alone will leak and you will have to start over, no matter how much pressure you apply. I know plumbing purists will argue with me, but I don't have all day to stand around trying to stop a leak.

Installed heater and turned on water. Immediately had water streaming from upper heating element. Pulled element to find that no required gasket had been installed. This defect would have easily been found with a quick, simple, inexpensive leak down check on the assembly line with compressed air. Called Rheem and they said they would overnight air me a new element. I received the element 4 days later. They made no offer of furnishing labor as I would assume they would. So much for their one year labor warranty. The lack of a gasket on the element has left me wondering about their quality control in the factory. I will not buy Rheem again as there is too much bad being reported in the reviews.

Easy to install; working fine so far (the water from the tap takes awhile to come up to temperature, but that may be the fault of our house's plumbing, not that of the water heater.

Installed unit next day after purchase, did not turn on AC until tank was purged and full. No hot water. Checked power to both elements which was good. Top heater element was burnt up, checking with ohm meter it was open. Called Rheem, they over nighted me another heater element, installed it. Instantly it burnt up. These heater elements are cheap and copper. I then installed a stainless heater element I already had. Unit heated up and worked fine. Called "Rheem again and they are sending me another element. If U purchase this unit U might consider replacing the copper heater elements with stainless ones. It's a universal fit. IT will work much better and heater elements will last much longer.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bluepeteguy69 A very functional water heater at a reasonable price.
Everything was very easy to understand and install the water heater right out of the box. Fortunately, the previous install already had all the hardware needed to simply "bolt" the new heater into place with minimal adjustments. It took about an hour and a half to install the water heater. It took a little under an hour for hot water to come out. It has been in for about two months and has continued to function flawlessely.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by o777 Rheem Water Heater Bad Start /Bad customer Service
I bought this water heater on 3/15/14. Installation was ok. Product has yet to work for one hour. First the heating element was bad , changed it that night . Customer service for Rheem has been nightmarish. I bought Rheem bc of its reputation, avoid it. They keep offering to send me parts to change, apparently I am free labor. I am sure I would have been better off with any other brand, avoid at all costs there is a reason it only has a one year warranty. It looks like a Rolls but runs like a Pinto.
