Customer Questions & Answers

How to vent

Asked by: Russell
this products needs to vent from the top of the heater all the way to the outside of your house, preferably through the roof, avoiding as many 90 deg turns as possible using 2 or 3 inch standard category one metal

6 month old heater makes popping noise when burner is firing

Asked by: Schwindt27
Popping noises in gas models normally occur when sediments build up in the bottom of the tank. When the burner comes on the sediments collect air bubbles as the water is being heated and the popping is the sound when being released. Think of a pot of water on a stove top when the water gets close to boiling. In a newer unit you would not think sediments would have built up so quickly. You can try flushing the bottom of the tank through the drain valve and see if this helps. In the "Use and Care Manual" we do recommend flushing a few quarts of water through the drain valve each month. If you have more questions please contact our technical support team at 800-431-1549 – 7 to 7central time, 7 days a week, this includes weekends and holidays.

Performance 50 Gal. Tall 6 Year 38,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 556.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit to replace old water heater I installed this water heater myself. I am not a plumber so it was important to find a water heater that was as close to the size of my old water heater. I have copper tubing plumbing so it was easy make the adjustments.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great water heater with sensitive sensor After much research I selected this water heater to replace our failing one. The water heater itself is great but the sensors have issues. The first one went out after 1 week. Of course it happened on Easter weekend. The second one went out on Thanksgiving weekend. According to the parts man these go out all the time. I have purchased several to keep on hand and they are easy to change. Just remember to turn the power off for 30 seconds and then turn the temperature control from cold to hot 7 times to reboot. The first sensor must have been defective but not sure why the second one went out. They will go out for paint fumes, odors and possibly dust.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product for the price point Had an issue about a year after buying it. The gas valve went bad. While obviously that's not desirable, customer service was fantastic and overnighted the part to me free of charge. I almost expected to get the run around, but what I got was no hassle at all. All it took was a 2 minute phone call and I got what I needed. I understand that mechanical things will break, and fortunately I was easily able to diagnose it. The people I talked to knew what they were talking about and I'm confident that they could have talked the most clueless beginner through their issue. Great product, better people

Rated 4 out of 5 by from does it deliver full load of hot water? Now installed for about a year on a system with a recirculating pump. Without settign water temp higher than we would wish, it does not deliver enough volume of hot water to fill an oval soaker tub without stopping for a few minutes after the initial load of hot water is run into tub. It seems it may not be uniformly hot from top to bottom to deliver a full capacity of hot water, despite recirculating system. Other than that it is good - easy to set and leave alone with instant reheat when returning from extended absence with it set off. Heats quickly. Visusal display of status helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great when you find a good one. Be sure to open the box before buying. The first one I bought was all banged up even though the box was perfect. Other than that the power vent works great and I can put my hand over the top of it and almost no heat is escaping when the heater is not warming the water. I think the power flap probably saved me maybe 5-10$ a month. Also this think I a very wide diameter due to extra insulation. So if your current heater is old and right next to a wall. Your water lines will not line up and need to be shifted over if running solid copper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy with product I replaced my last AO Smith water heater(s), with the Rheem product and so far we are very satisfied. The previous AO Smith product was replaced twice due to leaking tanks after only 2 years which was very surprising and dissapointing and extremely frustrating. I am very hopeful that this Rheem product will provide many years of trouble free service. I really like the design of the air intake and havining on the sides versus the bottom and no filter to clean. I would have given 5 stars but still waiting to see how the tank holds up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works fine I purchased this hot water heater about 14 months ago. It works fine and produces plenty of hot water. It was a precautionary purchase. The previous heater was older and I didn't want to wake up to a flooded utility room and cold shower. Unfortunately installation was problematic. Ideally, I would have purchased an exact replacement for the old heater to make installation straight forward. Unfortunately the newer units are a different size and form factor. The old unit mounted on short legs which was ideal for its location on top of the drain pipe. The new one has a flat bottom and would have blocked access to the floor drain. There were other small differences, but in the end they were enough to make it a difficult fit and a complicated installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The new one versus the old one I replaced a 13 year old fully functional Rheem hot water heater with a new Rheem hot water heater. The new one has a number of improvements over the old. Most important, the new one puts out 5% of the noise of the old one. It is almost silent when it is in operation. The gas valve, ignition system are simpler and more reliable to use. While old and new had the same number of gallons of storage, the new one supplies a lot more hot water before it runs out than the old one.
