Customer Questions & Answers

How to vent

Asked by: Russell
Very easy. Turn off the water supply valve to the tank. Connect a common garden hose to the spigot on the side of the tank (near the bottom and near the white electronic control unit. Open any of your faucets in the house to let air in during the draining process. Turn the plastic spigot know counter clockwise about 1 revolution. You will hear the water draining.

6 month old heater makes popping noise when burner is firing

Asked by: Schwindt27
I have noticed this and it doesn't seem to be excessive or a hazard. I suspect that the heat from the flame is causing the metal parts to expand slightly, but enough that they are flexing some of the fasteners that hold them together. If this is the case, it would be normal operation, I think.

Red light is blinking on dial what does that mean?

Asked by: nuzzy
If it is blinking just once every 5 seconds, or so, this is normal. If it blinks several times in series within 5 seconds, then there is a problem with the electronic control valve. I just replaced mine. See my comment from June 10 2017.

Performance 50 Gal. Tall 6 Year 38,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 557.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit to replace old water heater I installed this water heater myself. I am not a plumber so it was important to find a water heater that was as close to the size of my old water heater. I have copper tubing plumbing so it was easy make the adjustments.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great water heater with sensitive sensor After much research I selected this water heater to replace our failing one. The water heater itself is great but the sensors have issues. The first one went out after 1 week. Of course it happened on Easter weekend. The second one went out on Thanksgiving weekend. According to the parts man these go out all the time. I have purchased several to keep on hand and they are easy to change. Just remember to turn the power off for 30 seconds and then turn the temperature control from cold to hot 7 times to reboot. The first sensor must have been defective but not sure why the second one went out. They will go out for paint fumes, odors and possibly dust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great when you find a good one. Be sure to open the box before buying. The first one I bought was all banged up even though the box was perfect. Other than that the power vent works great and I can put my hand over the top of it and almost no heat is escaping when the heater is not warming the water. I think the power flap probably saved me maybe 5-10$ a month. Also this think I a very wide diameter due to extra insulation. So if your current heater is old and right next to a wall. Your water lines will not line up and need to be shifted over if running solid copper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy with product I replaced my last AO Smith water heater(s), with the Rheem product and so far we are very satisfied. The previous AO Smith product was replaced twice due to leaking tanks after only 2 years which was very surprising and dissapointing and extremely frustrating. I am very hopeful that this Rheem product will provide many years of trouble free service. I really like the design of the air intake and havining on the sides versus the bottom and no filter to clean. I would have given 5 stars but still waiting to see how the tank holds up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The new one versus the old one I replaced a 13 year old fully functional Rheem hot water heater with a new Rheem hot water heater. The new one has a number of improvements over the old. Most important, the new one puts out 5% of the noise of the old one. It is almost silent when it is in operation. The gas valve, ignition system are simpler and more reliable to use. While old and new had the same number of gallons of storage, the new one supplies a lot more hot water before it runs out than the old one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I had the same experience as some of the other commentators. Purchased in November 2014. The Hone... I had the same experience as some of the other commentators. Purchased in November 2014. The Honeywell electronic control valve failed in June of 2017. I called the technical support number and the man entered my serial number in his computer which immediately identified a known problem with the valve. He sent a new valve to me by Fedex and it arrived the next morning. I installed in about 1.5 hours, including draining, refilling and reconnecting all pipes. Seems to be working ok now. So, this was a very disappointing and inconvenient experience. But the fast response of Rheem and their no-questions-asked, no charge policy makes it acceptable for now. I hope this heater will last much longer than the warranty as all of my previous heaters have. I'm not yet sure that I would recommend Rheem based on my experience so far. Let's wait and see what else happens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wireless and functionality is underwhelming The base functionality of the water heater is fine. No issues with hearing water. The optional module that allows wireless connectivity is underwhelming at best. It regularly loses connection to the router and to the water heater. A power cycle corrects the issue for awhile. Very slow to respond to changes from the app. Would be nice to see more diagnostics, scheduling beyond vacation mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the energy savings / star rating We had this unit installed March 2016 and have been very pleased with the unit. We decided to go with this unit due to the cost saving features, energy star rating and capacity. It has kept up the hot water supply with a family of 4-5 with no major issues thus far. I am happy we spend the additional money to upgrade to this unit and the energy savings will pay off the difference.
