Answer:
Indoor - Outdoor is one or the other.
There is no indoor OR outdoor.
All the tanks with a round vent at the top for an exhaust pipe are indoor only!
The Tankless with NO round vent at the top, but have open slits at the top of the front panel are outdoor only.
They will be clearly labeled as indoor or outdoor.

Answer:
The venting on the units is the main difference. An indoor unit has to be installed indoors and an outdoor unit needs to be installed outdoors due to venting.

Answer:
Yes, a normal wall socket of 110 volt is needed to run the Honeywell controller.
It's actually a 12v transformer that you are plugging in with several feet of wire to connect the controller on the tank.

Answer:
Tes - this unit utilizes a 110v power source for ignition. It will not run without the 110 power being plugged in. The cord is REALLY long. With that said, I would recommend having an electrician install an outlet near the unit to ensure the cord never gets accidentally unplugged.

Answer:
No, this is a standard vent unit which uses a single wall pipe. Direct vent units will use a double wall pipe (2 pipes within 1 pipe), or two separate pipes.

The water heater that I'm replacing is a power vented bradford white that is vented out the back of the house with ofc piping. Will this unit be as to be vented the same way? Are power vented heater usually more efficient? I hope I'm not stepping backwards in efficiency.

If you have a power vented unit installed currently you still may have to install a power vented unit because of venting requirements of your home. I would confer with a licensed plumber to confirm. The unit you are indicating is a standard atmospheric model and needs to be vertically vented. Also it needs metal venting which you would have to replace since your current unit uses PVC. If this unit is vented out of a side wall and is located near the outside wall you may want to consider a "Direct Vented" model. Again I would confer with a licensed plumber to confirm your options. To answer you last question, yes a "Powered Vented" unit is more efficient. Read Less

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 190 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dead on Arrival This is latest gas hot water heater with electronic ignition, that is just beginning to be stocked in Home Depot (I ordered and picked up at store) Transformer needed to actuate the damper was Dead On Arrival. Rheem did not have transformer in stock and advised me to go out to local electrical supply store and find replacement. I would not recommend a product that a company does not stock parts for. I returned the item and replaced it with a model without electronic ignition. September 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Replaced older failed water heater Instructions straight forward. Qualified for a $100 rebate. Added a expansion tank at the same time. June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Water Heater I've only had mine for one week, so if I don't update, it means it is still working perfectly. I replaced a 50 gal, 50,000 btu tank that served me well for many years. So as this one is a 40,000 btu heating only 38 gallons with new heating technology, I would say that is is about 3x (300%) faster than my old water heater. Very impressive! I am hoping the Honeywell controller will outlast the tank itself; the electronic controller is very easy to use compared to the old manual controller, and the thermocouple that would seem to go out at the worst of times. So I will leave this with 5 stars and will only update if there is a problem. June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality item and easy to install I purchased two of the same model this year, as both water heaters in my home were 20 years old. The energy savings was noticeable the first month, AN I had more hot water volume - an unexpected benefit. It appears my old hot water heaters were filled with silt from years of use. One thing you need to plan for, if you are replacing an existing gas water heater, is that this unit will require a 110v outlet. This isn't a big deal, but you need to know BEFORE you install it, or you will not be able to fire it up. December 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice water heater I installed this a couple weeks ago myself. No problems with install at all. It is a little taller and a couple inches fatter than my old 40 gallon heater. I had to redo the plumbing and it barely fit into the hole the old one came out of. Otherwise no problems. I got a $100 rebate from my gas company, so spending they extra $30 over the cheaper model saved me money on the cost and will save me about $20 per year. August 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice The wi-fi feature is excellent. Gives up to date info. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works really well. Really happy with this purchase. We replaced a water heater that was 10 years past when it should have been replaced. While this is only 39 gallons, we have 5 people staying in our house right now and haven't had any issues with having enough hot water. August 9, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not a goog quality heater - don't buy I got this heater and had professionally installed. Within two months, heater stopped working due to gas valve failure. Since it is under warranty, I could get it fixed but very poor service from Rheem. You have to go through them and good luck with getting attention. I called 5 times and you get different answer each time. The parts are not available in Houston area so you have to rely on them. I don't know what will happen after 1 year when the warranty runs out. Poor quality product from Rheem - which I did not expect. It took them 7 days to get it fixed - very bureaucratic process in place. My previous heater lasted 16 years with no issue. I would not recommend this or any other Rheem product. June 22, 2016
