Easily installed this by myself. Had help from a friend getting it down the stairs, then I was on my own. Easy peasy! All of the connections lined up, and no problems at all,

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by COncernedwithenergy Had really hot water in less than an hour!
I did an enormous amount of research before purchasing this water heater and I am very satisfied with my purchase. It is comparable to the other, more expensive, models in terms of energy efficiency (which was the most important thing to me) and I even found it to be more efficient than some of the "Better" brands. 217 therms/year is excellent in my book. Shows it pays to do your homework as I almost bought the whirlpool 800 plus dollar model. Easy to install. My husband and his father did it in an hour.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chris Seems like a really good replacement
I bought this to replace a 7 year old 40 gallon Rheem. Our city has has 32 grain hard water so I noticed small leaks on the inlet and outlet valves on my prior model while installing a new water softener. My local gas company offers a $100 rebate for this model since it is .69 Energy Star so this made this purchase a sensible one. I used my own plumber who did the job for 2/3rds of what HD's contractors wanted.
The unit itself is a nice platinum gray color with a cool automated exhaust cap. You will need electric for this since the pilot is on demand as well.
The unit has a really good warranty and I plan to drain a few quarts of water out the bottom every quarter and eventually replace the annode rod to extend the life beyond the 12 year warranty period.
I can't speak to reliability as I have only had it for about 8 hours but so far it does its job.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EB14 Great water heater
Did alot of research, this one seemed the best.
NOTE: You must have a 110VAC outlet nearby (within 19') or this unit will not even turn on or light. Power is needed to operate the flue damper (it is not a power vent). If your distance exceeds 19', you will need to contact Rheem for a replacement 30' power cord. I tried a regular extension cord and it wouldn't work. Had to run in a new outlet.
Water gets hot quick, plenty of it and the unit stays cool to the touch.
I like the blue status light (blinks for normal operation), lets you know it's working fine.
I have read reviews (on other models) that the gas valves can be finiky, but they all seem to be using these. Seems efficient @ .69 EF, is E Star and gets a rebate from the Xcel.

This unit worked great for the first three weeks that I owned it. Then we turned it off while we went on vacation for a week and a half. When we came back, it was no longer working. The pilot would light, I can see a large blue flame that slowly turns yellow and then turns off. The unit attempts to light two more times and then starts flashing an error code.
Since this has a 3 year parts and labor warranty, I called the technical support number on the unit to ask them to come fix it. After talking to 6 or 7 agents, I had a variety of finger pointing at other people ideas, but was no closer to getting anyone to send someone to repair the heater. The most absurd of these claims is that the unit is not properly vented, as they claim it cannot have any turn above 45 degrees in the vent (we have a very short 90 degree turn in an otherwise vertical vent installation). However, that restriction is no where in the installation manual. 3 different customer service agents agree that this restriction is not anywhere in the manual, while concurrently complaining that a failure to follow this "secret" restriction is somehow the installer's fault.
Making this even more absurd is that fact that the unit worked fine for three weeks with the same ventilation setup. If there were insufficient air for proper combustion, the unit should have shown an error when I *first* tried to turn it on. Not several weeks later after having worked without problem during that time period.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by PMTAhiker Save us a bunch on Natural gas
I bought the unit before the old old one failed. Been tracking gas usage since install day in May (from last two years during warmer months as gas water heater is only thing that was using gas in that time.) Usage is down just at 75%! We also have a electronic ignition dual fuel heat unit (another brand) but having no active pilot lights make a small difference too. As added note: I did elevate slightly the unit in a pan that is draining directly out of pan.

I searched for a Short Hot Water Heater and was surprised of how hard it is to find one that is in stock. I was looking for a while when I ran out of time and had to find one fast. Found this one, easy to install and more than worth the price when I look at my savings. I wanted a 50 Gallon but because of time had to get the 40 Gallon. With it working so well, the 40 is better than my old 50 Gallon Hot Water Heater. Energy Star was my requirement also which this product is.
