I purchased this water heater about three weeks ago and installed it ten days ago. It appears to be designed so that pilot shuts off when not needed and reignites periodically. However, it won't reignite unless I turn it off and back on again. In spite of many notices on water heater and in packaging that instruct you not to return it to the place of purchase if there is a problem, return it to the place of purchase. The manufacturer first told me it was probably the result of low gas pressure and to call the utility company, which I did. The gas pressure was actually higher than normal and the utility lowered it slightly. I called the manufacturer back and they told me they have no one in my area (Marin County, California, which is about 25 minutes from San Francisco) that can service it. They said to try to take care of it myself or to find my own plumber and to send them the receipts after the repair, at which point they would decide whether to accept the claim. Really? Needless to say, I'm returning it to Home Depot instead and getting a water heater made by a different manufacturer.

WiFi was not really something we needed. Our box did not include the extra piece needed to make WiFi work. Purchased this model due to $200 water rebate... brought the price down below the less expensive models. Attached the water connections and filled and purged the pipes of air. Attached the gas line, checked for leaks, and moved the slide switch to ON. 90 minutes later we had hot water. Done from buying to hot water in half a day. Nice

Given the ugliness of the review average here, I thought I'd chime in to let people know that buying this beast will not necessarily be a disaster. Granted, I've only had it in for 24 hours, but I sure did enjoy my shower this morning! No problems with installation or operation. I'll come back to this review because I believe you deserve a report from someone who's had it running for a few weeks at least. If it lasts 30 days, I'll give it another star. If there's any problems, I will knock it down to 1 star because it's obviously a lemon model.
The only thing I really don't like is having to plug it in. Looks kinda stupid unless we wire in a new outlet. Both the design and the problems a lot of people are experiencing can probably be attributed in large part to the "Ultra Low NOx" requirements that our Green Overlords, in their infinite wisdom, have decreed for us.

The first unit I purchased in August of 2014 had to be replaced because it was defective. The pilot light kept going out. Within the first 3 months, we had to contact the installation company to come out to check the ignition. The first time he was able to relight the pilot light, no problem. The second time, he had to replace a faulty part. The 3rd time, he said it would be best to just get a new one, so he ordered a replacement.
We still had intermittent problems with the replacement. When I called the plumbing company to troubleshoot, their advice was to unplug the unit to reset the ignition unit, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. In March, 2016, I called the water heater company because their troubleshooting method no longer worked. Unfortunately, I didn't purchase the extended warranty and it was going to cost me over $100 just for them to look at the unit. Instead, the recommended I contact Rheem and let them know what the issue was so that they could send a replacement part. So I did. And I waited on hold. And waited. And waited. I waited so long that, miraculously, the water heater reignited while waiting and I no longer needed their services.
Well, today, just 2 months later, I am AGAIN having the same problem. The "reset" process didn't work. Given the amount of money I paid for this unit, I would expect that it be problem free for at least 5 years. My old school, call PG&E to light the pilot light, gas water heater was FAR SUPERIOR to this unit.
There is nothing worse than waking up to no hot water for a shower. Do not buy this unit unless you want to spend endless amounts of time on the phone or love waking up to cold surprises.

Hi, I installed this myself everything connected perfectly, however had problems getting the burner to stay on,, called Rheem; was not satisfied with customer service and figured it out for myself as a master trouble shooter and customer service professional extradindair. I want to say that the rating for this water heater are definitely not true!!! it is a very good heater and the reviews need some clarification. I do this for the people who are at a dilemma. Search no more. This is the one for 3-5 peeps in California also remember we need the ultra low emissions and energy plus water conservation units.
Here is what happened,,, Hooked up the heater all connections perfect, turn it on and it looks good. Then 15 min later it shuts off with Luke warm water. I call Rheem and they have to go through their diagnostics that then result in Rheem tech saying they need the gas pressure checked. Now that would make senses except I replaced a 42,000 BTU unit with a 36,000 BTU unit so GAS pressure is NOT AN Issue but RHEEM customer service said they cannot go any further with out that checked ” these heaters are designed differently” so I say OK make an appointment with SOCAL GAS. As I Waite I get my Trouble shooter ears up UNLIKE the existing RHEEM techs.. That are hindered by the most obvious scripts they are reading,, ERGO all the complaints about Rheem tech support.
So end of story The WFI unit prevented the Burner from staying on…DO NOT CONNECT the WIFI power or insert into the control unit until the burner is set to very high and has been on and you have very hot water at the sink. The WIFI unit controls the heater when it is connected so when I turned my heater on with WIFI connected ....I set the heater control to very low and the Wi-Fi kept it that way. When I discoed that WIFI all was ok the water got very hot and stayed that way four days now.
So do not believe this rating it is a great unit for the price and works very well. So heat wise it has a low flow internally as far as I can tell. so it is longer for water to get hot at he sink or shower, so get those buckets filled with cold water while u Waite for the hot and then water plants.

5 years into my 12 year warranty the pressure valve shot out of the water heater and hot water flooded my home. My independent plumber (he will earn nothing on my replacement purchase) told me that the glass had cracked inside the tank and that a new valve would not resolve the problem. After speaking to 4 "agents" by phone for 30 minutes (most of it hold time) I was told that they would send me a new valve ($8 value) or I could file a claim. 3 of the agents were impolite. Home Depot, the retailer that sold the product, would not assist. My replacement has been purchased at Lowe's.
