Answer:
I am totally confused by the answers on this thread - as are many others.
The first answer is from Rheem, who confidently says that the XG50T12HE40U0 model will work without electricity.
BUT, I found this thread under the Model: XG50T12DM40U0 NOT THE SAME REFERENCED BY Rheem!
Can someone PLEASE clarify whether the XG50T12DM40U0 model provides hot water when there is no electricity? Thanks.

I can't seem to edit my answer, so I'll just confirm what I said. On my post dated March 16, 2016, I said that the "electronic" ignition, most likely works like a cigarette lighter. My contractor brought over my new water heater last night (I had to get the 36,000BTU version, as this one was not in stock) and I asked him this very question. "How does the electronic ignition work?" Ironically, he said the pilot can be relit just by pushing the button on the water heater. He said it is the same principal as using a cigarette lighter, to make the spark which then becomes a flame. While, my new heater does need electricity to run the power vent only, ELECTRICITY IS NOT NEEDED TO IGNITE ANYTHING ON THIS HEATER. You do not need any matches or lighter. Just push the button, as I have already stated above. That's it------ I certainly hope this helps!
THIS UNIT does NOT REQUIRE ANY ELECTRCITY AT ALL. (The 36,000 BTU version does, because it has a power vent). Read Less

And....supposedly you will not need to light/relight the pilot with any flame (match or lighter). According to the specs, this unit has an ELECTRONIC IGNITIOR (Push the button, a spark is produced- gas must be on) and that's it!
The ELCTRONIC IGNITIOR must be nothing more than a mechanical device, such as a cigarette lighter. But, instead of roller your thumb over the IGNITIOR, you just push a button, which makes a spark.
I'm not a plumber or expert, but using common sense. I MAY be wrong, but ask a real expert or call Rheem to get your answer and not rely on some of these answers, which don't make any sense.
I wouldn't even ask a plumber, unless you know them personally, because they may tell you, that you need something you don't! Keep it simple---- Read Less

The Performance Platinum model number XG50T12HE40U0 is the only one in that gallon size and BTU that does not require an outside power source to ignite or operate. So, if your power goes out this unit will keep on heating.

Answer:
No, it has an electronic ignition. Cannot re-light a gas pilot light on this model. So if electricity goes out, I'm not sure if it has an internal battery as a backup to ignite, or not.
Also, this model requires a 110-volt AC outlet for the powered damper to function. So I'm not sure if the electricity goes out, whether this model will work or not. Something to consider before buying.

No! Do NOT attempt to light this heater with a match under any circumstances!
The pilot in this heater is an electronic sparker, not a flame. Activation of the sparker and release of gas to the burner are electronically linked. There is no way for a consumer to release the gas to the burner and light it with a match.

After looking at the product brochure, it DOES STATE AN ELECTRICAL POWER OUTLET IS NEEDED. My contractor told me over the phone when we found out this unit would have to be ordered, that an power outlet is not needed....but, I belive he was wrong too. The personnel on his end of the line, sounded like they just wished to move on and didn't sound all that competent, to answer that question either.
My contractor purchased the 36,000 BTU version of this water heater, which does require ELECTRCITY. When he brought it to my house, I told him he would need to install power for it, which he can do. But, he said it did not need it, so he opened the box and there was the cord!
Goes to show you can't take a verbal answer to be sure of this. Brochures can also be wrong or misleading. It's like having a boy or girl, YOU BETTER CHECK YOURSELF! Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super Hot Water! We've had this water heater installed for just a few weeks now, and I must admit that I paid a plumber to install it, so the installation was super easy (for me)! Seriously, though, he didn't seem to encounter any issues, but then again, he does this all the time. As for the Super Hot Water, he had left it on setting "B" which is 2 above "Hot", which I guess is the standard setting. Holy smokes that water was hot! I had to turn it down to settings, to Hot. Now, we were upgrading from an old water heater, so improvement is to be expected, but I didn't expect that much. Now, with our faucets on full hot, even on the Normal setting, I can leave my hands in it for more than a second without getting scalded. I'm sure this is helping us save water, since you don't have to waste so much waiting for the hot water to travel through the pipes. Out here, in California, that's a big deal to me as we are in a severe drought. I had no idea what rating to give for value, so I picked average. However, through PG&E, this unit is eligible for a $200 rebate, which is how I picked it, and justified the over $700 price tag. One final note: Home Depot had it on sale, or at least was advertising a lower price, just days before I bought it at $729. It was previously listed at $649. This didn't make me think "value" either. I'm hoping the price drops again soon and I can get a price adjustment, but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, seems great so far! I'll let you know how it's doing in 10 years. ;-) July 26, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Several manufacturing defects The first unit we installed had to be replaced, the outlet on top of the heater was leaking, the threads were damaged inside the unit and on the threaded pipe. I had to call Rheem and have the unit replaced. After the second unit was installed, the drain outlet was leaking and I had to call Rheem again and have another contractor come and replace the drain. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by PERFORMANCE PLATINUM 50 GAL. TALL 12 YEAR 40,000 BTU ENERGY STAR NATURAL GAS WATER HEATER I have not installed the unit yet. The problem that I have found is with the specifications. The specs say the unit is 21.75 x 21.75 (that is the tank size 21.75" dia.) I knew that would fit in my space. The specs do not tell you that the controls stick out another 5 1/2". So keep this in mind when measuring for fit. August 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Rheem warranty support. Rheem warranty support was good. Replaced the unit since the first one had faulty electric adapter. The technician indicated that the part would be sent overnight, but, after waiting full one day, and no sign of part. Ended up calling to find out that the part is not in stock, and would take two weeks!! I wish they had called me to inform about the delay, instead of waiting for me to call. Customer service person was nice and offered to replace the heater. Since it was weekend, had to wait until Monday. Also, I had to take a break from work to visit home depot to pick a new one, as if a new transaction. A total of about 10 days without hot water!! I am still giving 4 stars due to good warranty support. I had chosen home depot installation service which mentions 10% discount. But, the service provider partner ARS Rescue Rooter, did not give the discount!! The ARS Rescue Rooter contract was written in such as way that they are doing customer-supplied water heater installation, as if no obligation to ensure successful working condition. I was very disappointed with installation service, which I expected seamless service from Home depot purchase to installation. Now, I see there are a lot of good service providers in Houston, who would do the service for less price, and better service that ARS Rescue Rooter. August 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality from Rheem- Do Not Buy NOT A GOOG QUALITY HEATER I got this heater and had professionally installed. Within two months, heater stopped working due to gas valve failure. Since it is under warranty, I could get it fixed but very poor service from Rheem. You have to go through them and good luck with getting attention. I called 5 times and you get different answer each time. The parts are not available in Houston area so you have to rely on them. I don't know what will happen after 1 year when the labor warranty runs out. Poor quality product from Rheem - which I did not expect. It took them 7 days to get it fixed - very bureaucratic process in place. My previous heater lasted 16 years with no issue. I would not recommend this or any other Rheem product. June 29, 2016

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Another Failed Gas Valve Story You decide if it's worth the gamble of receiving a unreliable water heater. I purchased and installed a Rheem Performance Platinum 50-gal natural gas water heater on 7/9 to replace a leaking tank. On 7/21 it stopped heating water. Error code (8-4) indicated a failed gas valve. I called Rheem on 7/21 and went through the troubleshooting with the technician (consisted of turning the switch off, unplugging unit for 30 sec. and power it back up). After he was satisfied that the failure was unrecoverable, he arranged for a replacement valve to be sent and installed by their service rep. It was Thurs. and he said the valve would arrive not later than Sat. The valve shipped on Thurs. FedEx sent me an e-mail stating it should arrive on Fri. (nice!) Now, this part isn't Rheem's fault, but the valve got stuck at the FedEx Memphis hub due to an aircraft mechanical issue. Seeing that the rescheduled delivery was now Mon. and meant a weekend without hot water, I called Rheem first thing Fri. morning. It was not until I asked to speak with Tier 2 support that I was transferred to Monique. Monique listen carefully to my problem and understood my request that another valve be shipped to me for Sat. delivery. After Monique also called FedEx and got the same explanation I did, she insisted on waiting until "noon" CT to see if the original valve would make it on Sat. Monique called back and informed me that she had spoken with a Rheem service rep. who had the part in stock and would install it on Fri. Why didn't the original rep. check on that? I don't know. The plumber arrived at 7:30pm Fri. and installed a functioning valve. My advice is to be reasonable but insistent with Rheem's customer service. Ask for Tier 2 support if you have problems. July 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Only 24 hours old and not working I have been on the phone with Rheem for most of the morning (talking and on hold). My hot water heater didn't even make it to its 24 hr birthday and needs a part replaced so there is no hot water here. Rheem will be sending it out and I may expect it in a day or two. They are unable to say exactly when. Once I have the part, I have to find a licensed plumber who is willing to do the work for $125 or less and is also willing to wait 4-6 weeks to be paid OR I get to pay the plumber and wait 4-6 weeks to be reimbursed by Rheem. They are unable to provide a list of plumbers who work with them or are willing to accept this deal. Looks like hot water is too much to expect with a brand new Rheem . It feels like I paid quite a bit for nothing and the hits just keep coming. Well, I do admit the kids had a great time with the box. It worked just fine. One more thing, the user manual is VERY VERY POOR. July 5, 2016
