If our electric power goes out, would this water heater still run?

We frequently loose (electric) power. Since this requires an outlet, if our power were to go out, would we still be able to get hot water? Is there a back-up? Our old water heater was gas only (no power required) and we were able to take hot showers even when we had no furnace heat.

NO.

Want to make sure this is a powered direct vent and no chimney is needed.

Asked by: scott
No, this is not Direct Vent. It's B-pipe.

My current water heater shares a vent with my furnace (Y connection), assuming size and upflow are correct, can this water heater share it's vent?

Asked by: BC
You would have to be absolutely sure you have specifications correct. If there is any back-pressure when the furnace runs at the same time the unit will shut down. I wouldn't risk it and would either use a traditional water heater or ensure this has its own venting.

Can I use my existing 3" stainless steel vent with this model?

Asked by: Flish
It is meant to be used with type B vent pipe. Mine is galvanized.

We had them come back to investigate why and found out that this needs its own venting system. The back-pressure from both the furnace and water heater venting into the same pipe causes it to shut down. Our only options were to either pay inordinate amounts of money to get a new chimney run (a horizontal vent would not meet code) or to replace it with a larger tank, traditional water heater and eat the cost because Home Depot does not take returns on major appliances. I would not recommend this unless you know you need a forced-air water heater since the plumbers who investigated said they've not installed this style in a decade. We thought we would save money with a smaller tank and larger burner but instead are throwing out a new water heater.

MAJOR FLAW AND BAD SERVICE I bought this model in June 2013 and got the extended warranty. I paid $800+ for the water heater and thought I would save money in the long run on energy efficiency. WRONG. The flimsy vacuum tubing that controls the draft fell apart, and REEM would not sell me replacement tubing - their help line insisted I needed the whole induced draft vacuum assembly repaired, and it was not covered under my extended warranty. It cost me hundreds of dollars just to find the right type of automotive tubing and someone to repair the unit ASAP. Replacing tubing alone repaired the problem. Did not save any money, warranty and help line useless and company dishonest. Buy a cheap water heater and save your money.

Professional boiler installed this one in November 2015, including the double walled 65,000 BTU rated 3" flue adapter that was difficult to find the right part in stock. Great Hot water, 140-155 F setting, ordinarily never runs out, but when we have guests, the full recovery in 6-10 minutes. Replaced a 20 year Kenmore 40 gal.

The improvement in recovery is striking. The old Rheem required nearly a full hour to recover after filling a bathtub. The XR90 is done recovering in about 10-20 minutes. After a shower through a low-flow raincan fixture, recovery is done in about 5-10 minutes. An attempt to run this thing cold by intentionally running a bath, dishwasher, HE washer on hot, and a shower simultaneously did not succeed; the water heater kept up. All these observations were made with outdoor temperatures between 50 and 80 degrees and water temperature set in the "B-C" range (about 135 degrees). In colder environments with a lower inlet supply temperature, results might be different. With regard to comparable 40 gallon units, the smaller 29 gallon capacity appears well-compensated by the XR90's faster recovery time and overall efficiency (more heat getting into the water). When idle, the old unit would kick on several times per day to reheat standing water. The XR90 makes it 6-8 hours between reheat cycles. The blower is about as audible as a couple of computer fans, just a slight “whirr” alongside the normal burner noise. This application required installation into a small square corner enclosure closet with a 21" door opening Newer 40 gallon units are 22 inches and larger. The 16.5” wide 29 gallon 40K BTU XG29T06EC32U1 was considered as an alternative. The 17.75” wide XR90 got through easily with one 30 degree twist to pass the emergency relief spigot. On this particular unit, the flammable vapor sensor at the bottom threw an error code on the controller's LED. Rheem technical support asked that I remove the sensor and check resistance with an ohmmeter. This confirmed the fault. A replacement from Rheem was shipped overnight. Fortunately a spare, normally unused electric water heater in the attic was available. (If not, you would be reading an obituary instead of a product review). Home Depot should stock these FVS parts as replacement items, as there are multiple reports here that this sensor did not work upon installation. Follow NFPC code Venting Code during installation. The essentials are in the manual supplied by Rheem. In this application, the previous water heater showed signs of exhaust backflow with corrosion near the draft hood and long-term evidence of elevated moisture in the water heater’s immediate environment (mostly corrosion of stored metal items and warpage of wood items). The existing vent was 3" single-wall pipe exiting the old unit into an immediate horizontal turn, then horizontal passage through the exterior wall and out to a vent cap. The XR90 connected to the old vent resulted in what the family called "new water heater smell" but what I recognized as possible asphyxiation and CO poisoning. After shutting down the XR90 down and reviving that convenient spare electric in the attic, I had my roofer cut a new roof penetration and we installed 4" B-Vent going straight up. Follow the National Fuel Gas Code CLOSELY. Double-walled B-Vent is preferred, and pay close attention to providing enough vertical run for the corresponding amount of horizontal. It’s about 1:5 ratio, so even a 2 foot lateral will require 10 feet of total vertical rise. I chose to avoid the lateral distance issue by going straight up and out. That cost an extra $500 for the punch-through by the roofer, but I have no doubts the vent is working. Rheem has a Technical Service bulletin that details the requirements clearly. It explains that XR90 has an inducer fan to improve efficiency, and this fan is NOT a power vent. The XR90 is a “non-condensing Category I” device that requires specific venting. A vent that worked marginally with a draft hood device may not work with this unit. Also avoid putting power vented devices on the same vent as natural draft units. Follow the code. Rheem’s technical support on the phone was professional. The three agents I spoke with were all off-the-cuff knowledgeable about the product and its installation requirements. (This is probably essential for a company whose product, unlike cell phones or cable boxes, entails some risk of fire, explosion, flooding, or asphyxiation, or all of the above).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from PERFORMANCE PLATINUM XR90 29 GAL. TALL 12 YEAR 60,000 BTU NATURAL GAS WATER HEATER We didn't immediately look at this water heater because it's only 29 gallons. That said, the reason for this is that it's so efficient at heating water - it can recycle its 29 gallons of water three times in an hour. It's very quiet. It's a bit smaller than our old water heater such that we could fit it in our Subaru Forester. A final point is that if you install this unit you'll need an electric outlet: it has a fan that kicks in whenever water is heating. Now we hope that we don't have to think about it for a very long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I can't say enough for this Rising Star I am unable to speak to reliability as it has been in service for only one week. What I can say is that there is nothing like it on the market, and it was the only choice for me. With the unusual high (60K BTU) input, it has fast recovery like a tankless unit. The small tank (29 gallon) reduces the footprint, and together the unit outperforms 50 gallon heaters. Love it!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes a lot of hot water quickly. Efficiency, too. Was looking for an efficient water heater and my son (professional plumber) helped me pick this one out. He also installed it for me (Win!) and he had nothing but good things to say about it. Adjusting heat setting was easy, but I wonder why all water heaters don't simply have a thermometer showing you the temperature.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Noisy and came dented It came dented out of the box with no dents in the box, so looks like it was dented from the factory. We plugged in the fan to check and it was loud--could hear in other rooms. Liked the concept but decided to go with a traditional 50 gallon.
