Customer Questions & Answers

HI Just installed 50 gal. 9 year. Light show power and top element lit but lower element light unlit. suggestions?

Asked by: Dennis
In residential electric water heaters only one element comes on at a time. When your unit is cold (first installed or if power has been off for some time) the upper element comes on first and once the upper 1/3 is satisfied it transfers power to just the bottom element. From then on the bottom element does the bulk of the heating. The only time the upper element may come back on is when you have used a lot of hot water (filling a bath tub for instance).

If Home Depot does not have the water heater in stock they should be able to special order it for you.

Our units come in three sizes: Short, Medium, and Tall. Shorts are short and wide. Mediums are a bit taller and thinner. Talls are the tallest and thinnest.

Performance Plus 50 Gal. Medium 9 Year 5500/5500-Watt Elements Electric Water Heater with LED Indicator is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 418.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great My only gripe about this is nowhere in the manual for my configuration does it say that the upper element comes on first and after it warms up the water to temp then the lower element comes on to warm up the lower part of the tank, would have saved me a phone call to customer service

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Surprised with no hot water Within a couple weeks of install, we ran out of hot water one morning. We were doing a load of laundry in our washing machine and went to take a shower and had no hot water available. Never had that issue before with previous water heater which was 35 years old. If we don't do laundry around the time we take showers -we are OK. But that was very surprising. We purchased a 50 gallon model for a cape style house with one bath and about 1400 sq. ft. Were told this was the correct size for our house. Somewhat disappointed but we were probably spoiled with our old water heater that lasted so long . . . "just don't make 'em like they used to"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install and efficient to use We have had it for a few mnths and so far no worries. My husband install3d it in about 30 minutes. It was pretty self explanitory and didnt give him grief. It seems to be well insulatedand is cool to the touch even when the water is up to temperature. It seems to hold its temp even after three showers which is great because i noticed you have to disconnect the power to adust the temp. We havent had to adjust the temp so far through winter or spring. I can get four showers , bathe two Labradores and a load of laundry and a batch of dishes before tje temp wavers. Its a good productand i havent noticed any glitches. Make sure you read all the directions first.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed First to say, I was replacing a 12-year warranty Rheem that lasted 14 years without a break-down. However, I was very disappointed that this new one did not have an external adjustment to set temperature and put on vacation mode. When I saw in the advertising and specs that there was an LED read out, I thought that meant I could control the temperature and put on vacation mode. I was wrong. Plumber explained to make changes to temperature I had to unscrew the LED plate and get into the insulation. To put on vacation, I would need to unplug it. Well Duh! What good is LED read-out just telling me that its heating!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Installed Two 50-Gal Rheem Water Heaters I couldn't buy an 80-gal electric water heater anymore, so I bought two of these Rheem 50-gal units and hooked them up in series. I also installed the piping and valves to run them in parallel, one for each side of the house. But most of the time I run them in series with the circuit breaker to the first tank turned off, and just turn it on when we know we are going to have a larger hot water demand. So the heating element status lights on each water heater are really helpful for indicating what the hot water situation is at any time. I installed these 9 months ago and have had absolutely no problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grest so far. I can't comment on the longevity of the unit, since I just installed it yesterday, but so far, I love it. I did the installation myself, which was easy using a couple of stainless steel flex hoses with Shark Bite fittings. The unit appears to be well made, and I like the LED indicators. It took me about an hour to get it installed. When I powered it up, the power LED and upper element LED came on. After about 30 - 40 minutes, the upper element LED went off and the lower element LED cam on. After another 50 - 60 minutes, the lower element LED went off, and we had 50 gallons of 120 degree water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ease of installation and operation I bought and installed this water heater 2 weeks ago and have been very happy with the operation of the unit. The only negative thing I can say is your installation manual advised to contact the service tech if only the power and upper element LED lights came on. After power was connected, this is exactly what happened and the service tech advised this was what was suppose to happen. He advised that after 30 - 40 minutes, the upper element LED would go off and the lower element LED would illuminate and when the water was completely heated, that one would go off and only the power LED would be lit. This is exactly what needs to be written in your installation manual because that is the sequence that occurs.
