Customer Questions & Answers

HI Just installed 50 gal. 9 year. Light show power and top element lit but lower element light unlit. suggestions?

Asked by: Dennis
In residential electric water heaters only one element comes on at a time. When your unit is cold (first installed or if power has been off for some time) the upper element comes on first and once the upper 1/3 is satisfied it transfers power to just the bottom element. From then on the bottom element does the bulk of the heating. The only time the upper element may come back on is when you have used a lot of hot water (filling a bath tub for instance).

If Home Depot does not have the water heater in stock they should be able to special order it for you.

Performance Plus 50 Gal. Medium 9 Year 5500/5500-Watt Elements Electric Water Heater with LED Indicator is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 261.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 1st one lasted 7 months First water heater lasted only 7 months. Inside wiring shorted out. 2nd water heater leaked from drain valve when hooked up. Had to pull drain out and reseal. Hoping it last longer than a couple months.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Surprised with no hot water Within a couple weeks of install, we ran out of hot water one morning. We were doing a load of laundry in our washing machine and went to take a shower and had no hot water available. Never had that issue before with previous water heater which was 35 years old. If we don't do laundry around the time we take showers -we are OK. But that was very surprising. We purchased a 50 gallon model for a cape style house with one bath and about 1400 sq. ft. Were told this was the correct size for our house. Somewhat disappointed but we were probably spoiled with our old water heater that lasted so long . . . "just don't make 'em like they used to"

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed First to say, I was replacing a 12-year warranty Rheem that lasted 14 years without a break-down. However, I was very disappointed that this new one did not have an external adjustment to set temperature and put on vacation mode. When I saw in the advertising and specs that there was an LED read out, I thought that meant I could control the temperature and put on vacation mode. I was wrong. Plumber explained to make changes to temperature I had to unscrew the LED plate and get into the insulation. To put on vacation, I would need to unplug it. Well Duh! What good is LED read-out just telling me that its heating!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Time will tell, but, so far so good. Decent prince for a 9 year water heater. Very simple, old school operation. I didn't want anything fancy that can break later. The LED's are nice to let me know there is power, and if the heating elements are on. Self installation was easy with SharkBite connections. Now we have plenty of consistent hot water. I suspect this will hold up just fine. If I have one critique, I wish the pressure valve didn't point to the back of the unit. A minor complaint. I only run heat at 125, so I don't anticipate and excess pressure issues. No regrets with this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Features ! I am happy with the purchase of this water heater ! I like the idea of seeing a led light when the unit is on and also any trouble that may happen. The shipping carton was sturdy and was easily removable. All the things needed for installation where in the box and I did not have to make any additional runs to the plumbing shop. The install went really easy and startup was simple. I have used Rheem water heaters for my homes for years and always have been satisfied with the longevity of Rheem products. Good Company that has been in business for a long time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would love to be in hot water Installed the new 50 gallon hot water heater 4 days ago. Installation was easy. I left the thermostats set at the factory setting of 120 degrees. The water was just warm enough to take a shower one hour after installation. For a couple of days we lived with the water temperature that was hardly warm enough for two of us to take a shower with only hot water selected. The thermostats show settings up to 150 but the rheostats would only go to 130 without forcing them. Still the temperature isn't acceptable. I'm calling the company tomorrow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to install I was hesitant to purchase this unit due to our extremely hard water, however reading some other reviews from customers also with hard water set me at ease. The unit was very easy to self install and echoing others, took much longer to remove the old water heater than to install the new one. The only real draw back is the plastic drain port for monthly drainage, this however was easily remedied by replacement with a brass drain for an additional $10.00. Looking forward to seeing how this holds up compared to previous units.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replaced Marathon All's good after a month. Initially had a scare because when first energized the upper element was ON but the bottom one was not. Troubleshooting section said "bad element". After checking wiring and circuitry which took maybe 30 minutes the bottom element came on. I suspect this is part of the startup sequence since it's worked fine since but that sequence of starting the elements wasn't stated in the manual. Bottom discharge valve is "cheesy"; needs a good, replaceable metal valve there.
