Answer:
Yes, In my case however, the pressure valve was defective. As soon as tank filled the valve started leaking water. Tried lowering water pressure and it did not make a difference. Ended up exchanging the valve from my outgoing water heater which worked great.

You will need to add the relief pipe to it per local code.
In my case, it's a copper pipe run to within a few inches of the floor.

Just an FYI, water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. Important to note as the answer stating 7 pounds per gallon is incorrect. Wherever your water heater will be located, be sure the base will accommodate the weight of the unit, plus the weight of the water contained in the tank. For purposes of this example, I'll use 150 pounds as the average weight of the water heater without a tank full of water.
Example (50 gallon tank); 50 gallons x 8.34 pounds per gallon = 417 pounds..... plus 150 pounds = 567 pounds total weight.
Again, this is an example. However, any installation should consider both weight factors I have identified. Hope this helps. Read Less

Answer:
Hi Martha, As long as your platform is sturdy and level and designed to hold the tanks weight. Approximately 50 gallons x 7lbs per gallon is 350 pounds and the weight of the tank 100 pounds is total 450 pounds of weight sitting on your platform. To be on the safe side make that platform to hold 600 pounds or better. Legs are not required. truckerich

No legs required. I'm not sure what you mean by "sit flat on the elevated platform", but yes the unit sits flat on the ground. There is a vented area at the bottom that draws in oxygen for the unit during heating cycles.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 603 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works as expected Easy install and comes with pressure relief valve already installed. Only problem was big dent on lower side of water heater not visible until you remove carton. By the time you notice it the thing is already out of the box, down in the basement and how would you return it. I see from other reviews I am not the only one with that problem. Since I didn't think it would effect the operation of the unit I chose to just install it as is. It worked fine. Memo to Home Depot, don't handle these things like they are bowling pins. September 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good Had to replace my water heater after 10years. It finally gave out and started leaking. This Rheem heater was the closest like for like replacement that was available. The pilot and controller assembly is Honeywell. The tank was slightly large and taller than my previous heater. The water is now hotter hotter throughout the house even at a lower setpoint than my previous heater. I assume this is has to do with inefficiencies etc over time. Pleased with it and have had no issues. October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Haven't installed yet This hot water heater has yet to be installed but as long as it gives out hot water when it is, it's a winner in my books October 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install and start. Good quality product with a great warranty. Looking forward to many years of use. Hot water was almost immediate upon start up. October 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far so hot ...water that is I have this unit on the lowest setting and it delivers real hot water. Much hotter than the old AO Smith it replaced. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Raheem hot water heater I have always had Rheem gas hot water heaters in our house. The one we just replaced we had from 1995 until now 2016, and it only had a five year warranty. It still was running just fine. I only replaced it because of its age. Rheem has great products. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fast purchase and install I am overrating this item because I haven't even gotten a bill yet for my first month of use, but the overrate is worth how easy it was to purchase and install. I haven't had a single problem with the electronic ignition that everyone else has complained about and our water is much hotter than with the old hot water heater. Hopefully the 5 star rating rings true when I get my Xcel energy bill in October. September 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great replacement water heater! Our gas water heater began leaking a week before Christmas. After looking at our options, I decided on the Rheem Performance Plus 50 Gallon 40,000 btu High Efficiency Natural Gas Water Heater. from the Home Depot. The features and quality were second to none and the ease of installation was a bonus. The electronic control at the base of the unit even provided the piezo spark lighter to ignite the pilot. It was a pleasure to get such a great product at reasonable pricing. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone needing to replace their current gas heater! I did the install myself and had my work checked by local utility. January 12, 2016
