Picked up new unit. Installed. No issues. Defective upper element. Unit did not work. Solution - We will ship you a new heating element. It will only take a couple of days, then you can fix your new unit yourself. What a deal???? Rheem - Customer Service - very friendly, but I did not buy a self repair if it's broke unit. I bought it brand spanken new, so I would not have to work on it.
I've about had it with Home Depot Defective products. This "don't bring it back to the store" policy is horrible.

Nice looking water heater except the quality control is lacking. Picked up the first one from the store which was returned for damage. I was told the dents were cosmetic and it would function just fine. Before installing it I called Rheem to register. When I told them where the dents were they said I should return the unit to the store as the major dent along the seem would most likely cause it to leak.
I returned the unit to the store where I was interrogated as to why it was damaged...(they couldn't understand this was how it was purchased and why is was discounted). After the interrogation was over I purchased a brand new, in the box water heater only to get it home and find that one was damaged as well. Not nearly as bad but it was dented. Great quality control from the folks at Rheem.
I did install this one and aside from the dent and frustration, the water heater heats water insanely fast and is very quiet. The LED's are a nice touch to see which element is heating and how little it the element(s) are actually on.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by pkbhart Works as advertised...easy installation.
I bought the heater a few months ago and have basically forgotten about it...just as designed. My only constructive criticism is about the heating element indicator lights on the front...only one comes on at a time..usually the lower one..because only one element turns on at a time. This is how it is supposed to work..but I didn't know that and spent an extra few minutes rechecking the wiring, etc. A note should be put in the installation guide.. ONLY ONE LIGHT will come on at a time..or something like that. Anyway, its pretty cool that there lights for an easy check that the unit is working properly.

Replaced an old, leaking 80 gallon water heater with the 50 gallon Rheem Performance Plus and am glad I did. I bought the water heater with the larger heat elements and it was worth it because the recovery time seems to be much faster than the old one. If the heater does run out of hot water (which is not often, even with 7 people in the house), waiting 10-15 minutes makes enough for one more shower-- my experience with most electric heaters requires you to wait more than 20 minutes for hot water. Anyway, I would buy it again and I recommend it.

I bought the 40 gallon Rheem with LED indicators 6 months ago for a vacation home. The smaller unit was easy to lift and get in place. The LEDs give all the information you need to see if elements are working, and I really liked the long warranty period. It has been running trouble-free. My installation included a small 2 gallon expansion tank, a Honeywell mixing valve to let the tank run at the upper end of its heat range while the output water is 120 degrees, and an Intermatic CA-3750 contactor to turn the heater on and off remotely. The only reason the quality was not quite 5 stars is that the maximum temperature could not be set to the rated 150 degrees, it would only go to 145: above that the over-temperature protection kicked in.

This past Labor Day water heater leaked and I needed a new one. I chose this mid grade model based on my experience with other RHEEM products. It was very easy to install and I had hot water in 2 hours. The only thing I wished it had was a full port brass ball valve for the drain instead of the plastic one that was factory installed but I will be changing it out. This water heater doesn't run as much as my old one and has the indicator lights to let you know which element is calling for heat. I am pleased with this product.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by sahoward Ok, but hot water doesn't last as long.
I purchased this hot water heater as a replacement to our original one. The previous hot water heater had to be replaced, because it started leaking, but the heating of the water on it was still great before this. So I bought the Rheem and it was comparable in size and operations, so I purchased it thinking I'd get the same benefits. After getting the new Rheem installed we started using the hot water and after about a week of observation it didn't take too long to figure out that this hot water heater didn't provide the same quantity of hot water as our previous did. Both are 50 gal. units, but both didn't provide the same amount of hot water. So while this new Rheem is working, I am not satisfied with it like I was with the previous hot water heater before it started leaking.
