Customer Questions & Answers

Gas vs Electric

It mentions several times in the description that this is for GAS trimmers, will it work OK on an electric? What's the difference?
Asked by: coonster
In general, electric models I have had have a spool that fits into a cup or rotating drum housing. Gas heads are fit tight up against the debris shield or transmission. That's problem one. Next, you would have to find someone witha set of nuts and remove the electric spool and try the reverse head treads. IF, IF, the nut fit, you could THEORETICALLY cut off the drum and use this head. You might be able to make an adapter spacer but that means the debris shield might be too high and not cut off any string you just installed. The answer is mostly likely, "No or impractical." I tested my Toro electric 1400 12" trimmer and it won't work on it. None of the nut set fit. Gas trimmer are really high powered and throw a lot of debris. They have small shields. Electric trimmer are less powerful, have larger shields, and usually don't throw large amounts of debris at high speeds onto you. For thick shafted or tough weeds, a gas trimmer is a must have. Will the PivoTrim X4 trimmer head accept larger than .095 line and is it made out of plastic or metal?

I'm looking for a trimmer head that will accept larger line, such as 1.30 and/or 1.55 because I have to trim several acres of land. For the same reason, I'd like a metal head that will last longer than plastic. Thanks!
Asked by: SoCalDad
The pivotrim is set up to use .095 line. The holes could possibly be drilled out to accept larger line, but that will probably increase the wear on the trimmer you're using, as well as the pivotrim head because of the additional weight of the thicker line. The pivotrim head is a combination of metal and plastic. I'm using a pivotrim head that's 7 or 8 years old, and it's still working. I use the trimmer about 1.5 hours per week during the growing season. I'm edging concrete sidewalks, alley, street, patio, and around both wooden privacy fence and metal fencing. Don't worry about this head wearing out quickly. It will last a very long time.

I don't know why they don't carry these in the stores anymore but they should. I was thrilled when it came back available online. I ordered two and am still going strong on the first one. I weed whack about 6-9 yards a week and it does the job. Having the extra strings is great for getting jobs done quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awsom product Works awsome, used around farm tough on fence line. Eats up thick weed. Mowed down wild rose bush.Cuts down 1/2 stalks. Took a little time to figure out the tricks to use it, after that tore up the brush and weed. Long life from string, was suprised. Easy in stall on trimmer.

The bolts in this "UNIVERSAL" product don't fit in my Ryobi, a brand listed as being compatible. An hour at Home Depot with the person in the tool rental area (they know this stuff because they repair it) resulted in the person there being stumped. No other bolt would work, and it eventually became apparent there's reverse threading on my Ryobi but no bolt in this "UNIVERSAL" kit will work. The owner's manual doesn't show this part of the trimmer whatsoever, and neither do replacement part sites. I'd love for this to work because my trimmer constantly gets jammed and is nearly unusable, but this doesn't seem to be the fix for it.

Buy a J M Eagle 3/4" grey conduit coupling. Wrap 1-2 turns of electrical tape around the coupling so that it tightly slides into the pivot head recess. Buy a blue box Las' one inch white DWV end cap with a nice rounded end. Hollow it out with a Dremel tool sander drum to fit it over the coupling. Dry fit the coupling and trim as needed. Dry fit the end cap to just fit onto the coupling mounted in the RINO pivotrim. Cut both to be just short of touching the black pivot trim head at the overall cutting height you want ultimately. A total extension "fake bump and feed" or "bump knob" of about 1" to 1-1/4" is just about right to get an overall height of trimming of just under 2 inches. You can now drag an Echo SRM 225 along the ground using this height gauge to set the trimming height. The plus is that dragging stops the tendency for a free floating gas trimmer, like the Echo, to surge forward while trimming causing scalping or loss of control. I use only one or two strings, not four. The spinning end cap sort of slowly moves the trimmer forward with some increased friction so you can walk faster and not worry about the trimmer height or scalping the lawn. It has enough drag to stop sudden violent surges forward experienced with a free floating head when the head hits heavier grass densities at full throttle. You can PVC cement in the end cap onto the cut off coupling once you have the setup height you want. Walk with the head slightly behind you and your hip will stop any backward movements while walking forward. I run my Echo with an additional black debris guard attached to the original shield to stop flying grass that ends up on your pants. They are about $4-5 at a parts dealer locally. Just scribe the original outline and gradually cut the new one to fit against the flat part of the original shield. A few sheet metal screws and you are done. I also added a plastic sheet extension to the second added shield to almost eliminate grass thrown onto my pants. I cut half an inch off the coupling and the end cap. That resulted in a 1-7/8" cutting height. I would not cut off more than another 1/8". DO NOT cement the coupling into the pivot trim head. It won't fly off with the electrical tape around the coupling's outside dimension. HTH, Stefan

It came with directions and all the nuts and bolts to fit any weed eater. After assembly, I tested it. It worked great. The strings that came with it did not break the entire time (approx. an hour). I would highly recommend this product. It certainly beats having to change out the string in most weed eaters. Or not having the string release like it's suppose to.
