Product Overview

The Roberts SVS Silicone Vapor Shield is an underlayment that is in a class by itself. Our SVS is made of 6 mil wet strength paper and has a baked silicone coating that won't allow moisture to penetrate though to your hardwood and engineered wood floors. It is ideal for staple and nail down installations. The proprietary manufacturing process produces a strong product that will not fall apart like red rosin, craft and wax papers do. Our SVS has been vigorously tested under multiple conditions for moisture permeability and is proven to be far-and-away the best rated underlayment paper for moisture protection. SVS also meets the recommended perm guidelines as set forth by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). The two sides of SVS make it easy to install with the matte finish down and the smooth surface up which allows installers to easily mark chalk lines and slide wood planks easily into position. Radiant Panel Association lab tests have confirmed that SVS is also suitable for use on radiant heated floors and has achieved accolades from the Radiant Heat Association. Our SVS is made in Canada with 100% recycled contents.

Is this product self healing? How do you nail a floor down with this product

Asked by: elanor
The product just lays flat, there is no adhesive and you're not supposed to staple it down. I started out stapling it and it made it worse because it could move slightly when I was stapling down my engineered hardwood and it caused "popping" sounds when you walk on the floor. Recommend buying a better product.

vinyl floor use?

Can I use this under a vinyl floor in the basement. I am installing a waterproof trafficmaster allure floor and just want extra insurance that the floor stays dry. It was dry in all my paper tests.
Asked by: patchis
We're using it under Trafficmaster Allure Vinyl planks over the concrete board on the floors. It says it would work and was easy to work with.

This is a very reasonably priced product compared to other underlayments offered, but this vapor shield is a silicone-coated PAPER product. The title is somewhat deceptive because they call it silicone but leave out the paper part. It is not very strong and is prone to ripping unless you tread with care. Walking on it is just fine, but be careful about twisting your foot or those kinds of things. It is a vapor shield only and provides no cushioning or acoustic attenuation. I didn't measure it with my micrometer but I would estimate its thickness to be about 8 to 10 mils. The manufacturer states they use 6-mil paper which means that it is about twice the thickness of typical 20-pound copier or printer paper which usually runs about 3 mils.

I was looking for an inexpensive alternative to asphalt paper as underlayment for a new wood floor that was being installed. The floor manufacturer (Mullican) stated "NO Rosin paper" but had this material listed. I didn't want the asphalt based roofing paper and possible chemical smell in my home as was noted by some people in online reviews so this was a cost effective alternative that met the manufacturers specifications for warranty. Cut easily and had good coverage...whats not to like!

Very nice product and very easy to work with so the product did meet our expectations. No problems thus far with laying it down before installing hardwood floors. The manufacturer of our hardwood flooring recommended this product in their installation instructions so that's what we went with. Fortunately, our local Home Depot had plenty in stock so no need to purchase them online.

I used it as wrapping paper for my china during my move. Can't think of anything more effective at keeping dishes safe, and affordable at the price.
