Product Overview

The Roberts SVS Silicone Vapor Shield is an underlayment that is in a class by itself. Our SVS is made of 6 mil wet strength paper and has a baked silicone coating that won't allow moisture to penetrate though to your hardwood and engineered wood floors. It is ideal for staple and nail down installations. The proprietary manufacturing process produces a strong product that will not fall apart like red rosin, craft and wax papers do. Our SVS has been vigorously tested under multiple conditions for moisture permeability and is proven to be far-and-away the best rated underlayment paper for moisture protection. SVS also meets the recommended perm guidelines as set forth by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). The two sides of SVS make it easy to install with the matte finish down and the smooth surface up which allows installers to easily mark chalk lines and slide wood planks easily into position. Radiant Panel Association lab tests have confirmed that SVS is also suitable for use on radiant heated floors and has achieved accolades from the Radiant Heat Association. Our SVS is made in Canada with 100% recycled contents.

Answer:
The product just lays flat, there is no adhesive and you're not supposed to staple it down. I started out stapling it and it made it worse because it could move slightly when I was stapling down my engineered hardwood and it caused "popping" sounds when you walk on the floor. Recommend buying a better product.

Please check with the laminate manufacturer whether you can use this product with your flooring. Some laminate flooring requires a polyethylene film as a vapor barrier for laminate flooring installation, this will not qualify.
Here are the details of our product:
Our Silicone Vapor Shield has been tested and is an acceptable vapor retarder. Meaning it is a membrane or covering with a vapor permeance (perm rating) of greater than or equal to .7 and less than or equal to 10 when tested in accordance with ASTM E96 Method A. Installation of a vapor retarder reduces the potential for moisture or vapor related problems, but does not guarantee elimination of moisture or vapor related problems. Install a vapor retarder over wood panel or board subfloors prior to installing nail down solid strip or plank flooring. Overlap seams a minimum of 4 inches or more as required by manufacturer or specifier and local building codes.

This is a very reasonably priced product compared to other underlayments offered, but this vapor shield is a silicone-coated PAPER product. The title is somewhat deceptive because they call it silicone but leave out the paper part. It is not very strong and is prone to ripping unless you tread with care. Walking on it is just fine, but be careful about twisting your foot or those kinds of things. It is a vapor shield only and provides no cushioning or acoustic attenuation. I didn't measure it with my micrometer but I would estimate its thickness to be about 8 to 10 mils. The manufacturer states they use 6-mil paper which means that it is about twice the thickness of typical 20-pound copier or printer paper which usually runs about 3 mils.

While it may be great as a vapor barrier it tears much too easy and does not provide the sound proofing that the roofing felt paper provides. I would not use this in the future and would not recommend it over the roofing felt paper. It is much better than the normal paper used by some for underlayment but I would not use this in the future under hardwood flooring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly on tacky floor We needed something to lay our laminate wood flooring on, because the concrete floor still had tackiness from previous glue used for other materials that we ripped up. When we laid the new flooring down, it would stick and squeak. This product was the perfect solution for us, and so easy to use!

I would suggest adding the self adhesive strip to both sides of the paper or at least one side. It would be MUCH easier to use when preparing for the hardwood flooring installation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value What can I say, it's a roll of paper, waxy on one side. Of course it's easy to roll out! It's thin enough not to affect your wood floor.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a very good product This vapor shield was cheap in price and quality. I personally didn't like the product because no matter how hard you tried to get it perfectly flat, it would sometimes bubble under the wood. This causes popping sounds under the wood. I'm guessing it bunches up slightly when the wood is nailed through the tongue. Probably would be ok for a floating floor. I would recommend doing more research and finding a better product.
