Last fall we installed a 3/4 inch solid oak floor over a concrete slab. We put down rolled roofing as a vapor barrier. We floated the floor (6 inch planks) . The planks started cupping soon after installation and now the floor is buckling. We are going to take up the floor in 3 pieces and then glue it down. Do we need to seal the concrete floor before we glue it down? Should we use biscuits to help bind the pieces after we glue it down? Is R1535 the right glue? And last, should we use straps to help pull the pieces back together. The room is 12x18. We expect to recut it along the tongue and groove seams ending up with (3) 4x18 pieces. I'd appreciate your input as we try and fix this mess, and please add any other advise you think we need.

Get professional to install floor. Glue down flooring without rolled roofing material on concrete floor. I installed bamboo flooring with only urethane glue with no problems.

4-gal. Premium 4-in-1 Wood Flooring Urethane Adhesive is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 15.

When I opened the container the top layer of adhesive was completely dried out to a depth of 1/2 inch. The container was not properly sealed. I cut the center out to use the product. When done for the day I put the top back on and put a full box of flooring on top to seal it. When I opened it the next day, same thing, this time it was solid for about 1/4 inch. Cut that out and continued with the floor. Next day same thing, this time after two full boxes of flooring. I estimate out of the four gallons I had less than three gallons of usable adhesive.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What a waste. If you don't use it all... What a waste. If you don't use it all in one shot, the next time you open the cover the top layer will be dried already. The first container I had to throw out over half of it. Flimsy lid doesn't close well, and very expensive. Why couldn't they put it in a paint or drywall mud container? What a waste!

Expensive, adds time to your installation, does not avoid nailing, dried too quickly in the pot but gives an exceptional result. No more noise, gives the impression of walking on a concrete screed and helps to correct the problems of flooring of the old house. Ideal for old houses. Sorry for my English.

Before you glue a floor, for DIY'ers, ask yourself: Do I absolutely HAVE TO glue a floor down? If the answer is in any way "not really", do something else. It's super difficult and time consuming. So different from a floor nailer. But solid bamboo glued with this stuff looks amazing. Sorry I don't have a pic yet. We have a non-nailable concrete slab, and Hawaii is infamous for pests like fleas, centipedes and bed bugs that love hiding under floors, so just laying down a rubber sheet and click-Iock floating floor was not an option for me. I also wanted a nicer, all solid bamboo look. I would say the 4 stars is primarily because of how it's packaged. Otherwise it appears to be functioning as advertised and would be 4.5-5 stars, This should come in a more square bucket to facilitate scraping out. Long review so here goes... Because of what it's supposed to do, it's hard to work with and potentially messy. But you get a bomber installation for the trouble. This review is especially for my Hawaii peeps, as there are island-specific challenges. This was used for installation on an existing concrete floor in a 1976 home we live in, so we had to do one room at a time. The floor was cleaned / etched with a rotary scrubber and muriatic acid, rinsed and wet vac'd 3 times. Big (>1/8") cracks sealed with epoxy resin. Pros: -Like I said, absolutely bomb-proof installation. I think this will outlast the rest of the house. -Thick and holds enough shape, while still allowing fine adjustment for 30-45 minutes -Provides moisture barrier, crack isolation and adhesive in one product -With appropriate flooring, weighting, and time, can handle minor variations in floor level. This is important, because finding a perfectly level slab or an affordable contractor to fix one is nearly impossible here. -Cleans up with mineral spirits thankfully. Cons / "cons" - some of these are just challenges of this kind of material that you have to accept -can "flick" in it's goopy state onto surfaces you don't want -can get everywhere if you're not careful -requires 24 hour setting time, including the anchor rows you have to have set solidly first, so factor that into your time! -Fair amount of waste with setting when not in use, spatter and so on, so figure extra, probably a whole bucket over what you calculate, or even two if you have a larger area (>1000 sf). Suggestions - for DIY'ers, arrived at through weeks of evenings and weekends making all the mistakes: -after the anchor rows are fully set (with nice clean edges, see below), cut and dry lay as much of your flooring as possible and stack it in reverse order nearby but out of the "spatter zone", then focus only on troweling and setting -If there's going to be ANY DELAY over a few minutes in spreading and gluing the next row, weight the floor down and carefully scrape and clean the excess glue (all of it, seriously!) from under the leading edge. If you don't, you're in for the chore of cutting, scraping and chiseling set glue out from under that edge so the next planks will fit flush or the tongue and groove will mate properly. -I had the best result from troweling on a smooth thin layer first, then giving it the "texture" with the toothed trowel. Sounds like it takes longer (troweling twice??? yes), but it ensures a continuous moisture barrier for one. Also, this stuff gums up tools so quick, I found it impossible to keep my texture trowel usable trying to do it in one go. Perhaps my troweling skills aren't up to snuff, but go ahead if you think you can. Even though the teeth "scrape" it off, it leaves a thin layer behind, and most* gaps close with weighting and setting. -*Don't worry too much about bubbles (the directions say "ensure there's no bubbles under the flooring"), how they think you're supposed to do that without xray vision is beyond me. It's fine, it holds so strong I'm considering gluing an old car to my ceiling for decoration. -ignore the directions to cover the glue with plastic wrap at the end of the day / session. Pointless as it begins to set once exposed to air. Next day just cut around the edge with a utility knife and pull off the thin layer of set adhesive. Cut the WHOLE top off, don't just make a window. You'll regret not having the whole area to scoop from and glue will get caught up under, increasing waste. -Similarly, if you're going to not use an already opened bucket for some time, be prepared to lose a fair amount to setting. I opened a can after 3 weeks (had a delay in getting back to the work), and had to cut off a 1.5" thick cap of set glue. It was fine and totally usable underneath. If you're detail oriented, cut a round piece of tough cloth like cotton duck, make a fold in the middle for a handle, and smooth it onto the top of the glue before closing the bucket. That'll provide a grab-able backing for the "cap" to pull off. -Buys hundreds of disposable gloves, I mean it. You can try using expensive rubber gloves, and clean them every time you dip your finger or hand in glue, but you'll lose precious working time. -Buy the biggest can of mineral spirits you can, and plenty of paper towels. You'll need them for clean up. I know for pros it sounds silly to say clean your tools but you really must CLEAN THIS STUFF OFF IMMEDIATELY or else you'll end up throwing away tools that slowly build up layers of it. It can't be peeled off and once set, mineral spirits just give it a nice shiny finish. -Don't bother with those idiotic, overpriced "cleaning wipes". Paper towels and mineral spirits work great, and you'd need so many wipes you'll go broke buying them. I actually didn't make this mistake, thank god, but it became obvious quickly. -Ok I suppose on a perfect, new concrete slab, you could roll your floor with the recommended 75# roller or whatever, but this doesn't work super well, and if there's any high or low spots, it does nothing. It also will press any particles like dirt or sand into your brand new flooring (In Hawaii, there are no perfect, nice clean rollers to rent). I weighted it with unopened boxes of the flooring, which are easily moved, have a good weight and are cardboard so easy on floor finish. When I got to the end. having a couple boxes left of my overestimated supply, that was nice. Also books, weight sets, and children make good weights. :-)
