Why did my application not work?

I have a dog dock that is made from 2x6 boards. Glued to the boards is Beaulieu Mainstream - Color Ivy 6 ft. Carpet. I used the 6700 as suggested by the HD rep. After 2 years it has come unglued and the backing on the carpet has fallen apart. Without the backing on the carpet, can I re-glue over the old glue?
Asked by: cmiller73
The carpet, if not already, must be rated for outdoor use. I would suggest not gluing over the existing if possible. My suggestion is an aggressive sanding of 40-60 grit or a sanding wheel on an angle grinder to remove all the existing glue & backing. The new stuff will stick only as good as what it is sticking to. For example: If you are trying to stick to old, peeling paint, the new stuff will hold as well as the paint is holding. Prep is the key to any quality done job. Poor prep & skipped steps will generally result in poor performance/life/quality.

6700 4 Gal. Indoor/Outdoor Carpet and Artificial Turf Adhesive is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good stuff First time I ever glued down flooring. Nat bad once I got my pattern down. I put the glue on dricore that I had painted with epoxy floor paint. I used random pattern and backing 2x2 carpet squares. My trowel was 1/8 inch notched. Coverage was lower than expected. I had 300 square feet and used six gallons. There was no odor and it did clean up with hot water and soap lots of hot water and soap. I dry fit all the carpet panels before I started. I strongly suggest this. Once the tile hits the glue, it's gonna stay down. I never timed how long I had to do a final position on the tiles, but I was able to slide them around for at least 10 minutes. My helper (wife) used a J roller to make sure every thing was in full contact. That quickly took any bubbles out. This went well enough that I'm going to replace some beat up stuff on a slab behind my garage.

The carpet went down easily and is still down after three weeks, so I suppose it did the job. The odor is quite strong, so if you do use it, be sure you have a few days to let the gas dissipate before using the room.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not an outdoor adhesive This stuff may work if you use it on a covered porch but that's it. I applied this stuff to my boat to hold the carpet down. The carpet cured for 3 dats at around 75 degrees and then 4 more days at around 50-55 degrees. I tried grabbing an edge that was slightly in the way and the bond was strong enough to pull the fibers out of the carpet. Good right? Wrong...if you put water on the carpet and wait 5 minutes, the carpet will peel up like it was held down with pudding. This stuff does not repel water and cannot get wet.
