The wider end spreads out the tapping to create less chance of damage to the pc being installed.

I have had a few floor installation kits (I've passed some on to family members and never gotten them back but that's OK - they don't cost that much) and in each one of them, even different makes, the pull bars were of poor quality. What do you want for the low price of these kits. This pull bar has a nice sized striking surface and the metal is much more solid than the kit included pull bars.
I bought this pull bar all the while thinking: "Gosh... I hope it's worth it 'cause this is a lot of coin." After using it, I can confidently say: "Yes... it is worth it." It is, especially if you expect to be laying down more than one floor in your (or anyone else's) home. It takes all the punishment that it NEEDS to be given.
I can't understand the reviewer that said that his bar broke. In my experience, after having laid over 10 floors, there's never any need to really hammer the bar. If strong hammering is needed, maybe either the person isn't doing it right or the type of flooring being layed is of poor quality (it doesn't click and hold very well).
As to the reviewers who say that their bars damaged the flooring, the same thing applies. I've learned, with time that, when laying laminate, cheap (7 or 8 mil?) laminate has to be handled carefully. I've always used a wood block between the pull bar and the edge of the laminate board so as to disperse the impact of the hammer's hit. That way, damage was rarely done and what did get 'damaged' was usually minor and of no consequence.
Bottom line, used right, this pull bar is a good investment if you plan to lay more than one laminate floor. It's even a good purchase to consider if you plan to lay only one floor.

Used to position end pieces of flooring next to the wall. Works as advertised. Seems heavier than it needs to be. A big chunk of metal, ready to fall off your table and bang up the new floor.

I have done laminate only one time before and did not use this tool. I wish I knew how easy a ten dollar tool could make my life. It is absolutely necessary to install your floors correctly. However if you hit the floor piece to hard with this it will chip the laminate.
