Life of direct burial electric wire

How long is your direct burial pipe rated for? So, how long will your 500 foot rolls of 10/3 wire last when buried. Also, can they be buried with a water line in a trench with sand?
Asked by: JimoFCALIFORNIA
Answer: Type NM-B cable is an indoor use only product. It cannot be used outdoors for any installation (even if installed in conduit). For your application, use Type UF-B cable which is rated for direct burial applications: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Southwire-250-ft-10-3-UF-B-W-G-Cable-13059155/202316283 The expected life of electrical cables is dependent on many variables. As to whether it can be installed in the same trench as a water line, please consult your local building inspector.

can this be buried under ground

I need to bury this under ground out to a shed is this safe to bury under ground
Asked by: Sparky
Generally no, the 2011 NEC revision calls for NM-B wire to be for use in dry locations only and they consider underground installation (even in conduit) to be a wet location. Some states may allow this though. You'd have to check. Actually it's a little contradictory since it says "shall comply with at least on of the following". Use uf-b rated cable. NEC 310.10(C) - Insulated conductors and cables used in wet locations shall comply with one of the following: 1.) Be moisture –impervious metal-sheathed 2.) Be Types MTW, RHW, RHW-2, TW, THW, THW-2, THHW, THWN, THWN-2, XHHW, XHHW-2, ZW 3.) Be of a type listed for wet locations. 8. NEC 312.2 - Enclosures installed in wet locations shall be weatherproof.

125 ft. 8/3 Black Stranded SIMpull NM-B W/G Wire is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price Significantly cheaper than buying it by the foot from the in-store spool. I was able to get this 125 ft roll for about the same price as it would have been for 75ft off the roll in the store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Free shipping made the deal. I had purhased 2 wire from the local HD, then realized I needed 3 wire to keep my project up to local code. I returned the wire and found the local store did not have the 3 wire I needed. When checking online I found I could purchase exactly what I needed directly from the Home Depot online site. It was a few dollars more but well worth it with free shipping. Placed the order and it arrived in 3 days. Project Complete.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Wire This wire offers good quality copper, and a decent insulation that has a slick coating that makes it easier to pull through conduit. The insulation is fairly easy to work with even if you don't have exactly the correct wire strippers. The wire is 6 gauge so it is a little difficult to work with, especially in junction boxes, etc, where there is little room to work. Allow for extra space, larger box if necessary, etc. The ground wire is naked copper wrapped in paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value Had bad old aluminum wiring to stove (50A) 60 ft run and dryer (30A) 35 ft run. Was going to buy 10-3 with ground for dryer and 8-3 with ground for stove but it was cheaper and better to buy this quantity and use for both, and have some left over for welder hi amp circuit. Bought a waterhose reel, wound this stuff on, took to attic and used old wires to pull new. Worked like a champ. The blue big box had a similar price but none in stock, HD did have it in stock nearby.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality and Value was exceptional The quality of the 8-2 wire was as expected. I needed to run three separate 70' lines to my new tankless hot water heater. The correct voltage was produced even with one of the lines being spliced. I would purchase again if needed. Value was a whole lot better by the roll than buying by the foot.
