Can I cut ceramic or porcelain tile with it

Asked by: AgentOOSoul
Yes. But your preferred tool for cutting ceramic or porcelain tile should be a wetsaw, not this.

Is this appropriate for my project?

I need to cut away a section of 3/4" plywood countertop underlayment, to revise cabinet layout, pry it out then put down a fresh section of plywood after I've replaced the offending cabinet. After that I will be laying down new Hardi board or cement backer board before tiling. QUESTIONS: 1) Will the Rotosaw work to start close to the wall then forward to cut back to front thru 3/4" plywood? (then later to cut the new sink hole) If yes, what bit is recommended" (I doubt a saber saw or even my reciprocating saw would get close enough to the wall to completely cut away the plywood which is why I'm considering the Rotosaw) 2) Same basic question for Hardiboard or cement backer-board. Will this work to cut it, and what bit is appropriate to cut the sink hole into the backer board?
Asked by: CatLady
The RotoSaw will not cut flush to the wall. To cut plywood use the XB-MP2 Multi-purpose bit. To cut cement backer-board use XB-DC1 Duracut Bit or the XB-UL1 Underlayment Bit.

5.5 Amp Corded 1/4 in. RotoSaw Spiral Saw Tool Kit with 5 Accessories is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adequate for the job This bottom line rotozip was bought because I could not find my other one. My first roto was fantastic (someone broke it), the second one was okay. This one is only adequate. If you're doing a little bit, fine, but if you want good control and a better job, get the better one (at least I am anticipating the top of the line is equal to my first one). Otherwise, they're going the receding junk route of too many once formerly good tools. It works, but I've certainly had better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to toolbox. I had been using a lighter duty dremel tool for cutting speaker cutouts in drywall and it gave out. I got plenty of use out of that tool and can say nothing bad about it. I purchased this RotoSaw as a replacement based on the larger motor and somewhat more sturdy design and feel. This tool puts less wear on drywall bits based on the fact that in the dremel the bits always looked burnt after very little use. In this tool after 25 holes the bit is still shiny and looks unused. Based on the higher speed if your depth is off you may break bits is some circumstances if you hit a metal plate or nail in the wall. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I hope you read this before you make your decision This tool really suffers from mismarketing. It was originally thought up to create cutouts in existing drywall cleanly, precisely, and safely. It can follow a line better than anything else while doing this. It is of extreme utility in this capacity. For homeowners, It is of slightly less remarkable capacity in making precision electrical cutouts in drywall as it feels out the contours of the boxes behind with a pilot point. That takes some skill and practice, and it doesn't do that well at all if the boxes were mounted by an amateur or made of plastic. So, the small scale of electrical cutouts generally lends itself better to the jab saw. Professionals love the RotoZip because it can do that task faster and more cleanly in experienced hands, but really, for the DIY homeowner who does it once in a blue moon, doing electrical cutouts slowly and steadily with the jab saw and perhaps a low-powered rotary tool is much more useful. Again, if you're drawing a line on mounted drywall and cutting into it, buy this tool, not one of the knockoffs or copies. You really can't judge it well until you try your hand at this simple task with it, and also tried to accomplish the same task using anything else. Sure, it can accomplish a large range of cutting tasks with different bits. I've tried it for some of those cutting tasks. But for this one tricky task, following a cutout line in drywall there are absolutely no substitutes for this tool. This is why you should buy it, not the other reasons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roto Zip Works great doing any sort of remodelling project. From cutting holes in countertops to cutting drywall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes hanging drywall much faster This handy tool takes a lot of the measuring out of hanging drywall. I added the bit that has a guide on the end so I can just screw up a sheet mark the vicinity of my cutouts and use the guide tip to cut clean, straight lines or even circles to follow can lights. I would recommend wearing a mask or using a vacuum to cut down on the dust, because there is a lot of it. It takes a little practice to keep it flat on the wall and to control it well, but it's a great tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Cool Tool Been using this for a while and its damned handy. Some "for instances" of my use of it was "jigsawing out" patterns in 3/4" laminated particle board furniture, rounding corners on similar stock... kinds of things. I put it under some long uses at times, and while it heated up, it did not fail or "get weird". Seems like a decent professional tool for home use.
