I have had tilapia in mine (about ten) for the past two years. I had more, but had issues with the filter I built (out of a five gallon bucket). The only issue is that the weight of the water pushes out the sides. For my next iteration, I'm going to build wooden enforcement on the sides.
also, make sure of where you place this. Water is at least 8 lb/gallon.

To answer your question, I don't think it leeches, but I'd be concerned about putting it in the sun, due to UV.
Good luck!

How resistant are these 54 gallon RubberMaid bins to direct sunlight and outdoor weather? In another posted question, Paula in San Francisco says she uses a 54 gallon RubberMaid bin outdoors, as a feral (or wild) cat feeding station, exposed to tampering by other wild animals such as raccoons. Temperature probably would not be a problem for RubberMaid plastic, but sunlight might.

Because I have to cut them to make entry ways for the cats they eventually crack-usually at the right corners of the cuts. They are difficult to open and crack more frequently when used for feeding stations for that reason- also at the tops where you have to press to release the catch. The tops are much stronger than the bottoms and weather well-I have several left over from when the bottoms broke. I think if they were not cut they would stand up to the weather just fine for a couple of years. As I use them the feeding stations last 1-2 years and the shelters 2-3 or 4. Read Less

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 114 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Brittle Tops If the composition of the material used, especially on the tops, were less susceptible to breakage, this could be a very nice storage container. I love the size for taking stuff to the beach in my truck and not having to worry about rain. Unfortunately, the tops crack easily. Also, the design of the tops are as such that water collects on them if they encounter rain. And then, you have a mess if you try to open the container; not well thought out. Rubbermaid has a winner here. They just need to pay attention and execute better. May 1, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Average bins - Does the job Purchased (2) of these bins to have some form of water/weather proof storage to put in the back of the truck when going camping or ATVing. They do the job ok (can fit 4 helmets in each bin or 3 large sleeping bags with a pillow for each) but sure wish they were a little more durable and had a locking cover like some of the smaller sized bins rather than just the "snap lid". Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Huge storage area. This storage tote has a very large amount of space for a very reasonable price. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BEST CONTAINER TO HAVE! I love this container. it's the right size I need to store clothes in. I'm glad that homedepot had them. August 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product Good product for storing large items in the garage. Heavy duty lid stays in place. Great for storing holiday decorations, garden hoses, and other items that are too large for traditional totes. Perfect for stacking on top of steel cabinets for a clean and organized garage. We have 12 of these and they perform well. Only negative is that the tote walls are not very thick and can break or puncture if dropped or over-loaded. Definitely recommend this product. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Purchase This storage container is large enough to hold either a few bulky items or many small pieces. It is also stackable. Very nice for storing winter clothes or heavy bedding. August 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed My wife and I ordered this large top in order to store a artificial Christmas tree and assorted Christmas decorations. We were able to fit everything in this single tote with room to space, and easily move it to the basement for storage. Good quality construction, and we will most likely buy another of these in the future. July 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Almost a tough tote For the brand, you expect a tuff all around tote. It falls short in durability on the side. With only half loaded, one of the sidewall plastic tore near the top center. The overall look and feel is great though. July 19, 2016
