Questions & Answers

What size/type screws does this need when going through drywall into wood studs, to be strong but also lie flush to the holes in the uprights?

Asked by: A2kelley
I use the standard coarse thread sheetrock screws. They stay in the material better than nails. Nails have a tendency to work out of the sheetrock over time. Plus, the screws are more forgiving when the house shifts.

What is the load bearing capacity of the single track indicated below - i.e., with two shelf supports how much weight can I put on a shelf?

Asked by: gdr
I would recommend a 2x6" header with a 2x6" half inch strip of plywood glued in the middle. The plywood also helps the bearing weight capacity and helps keep the header from sagging. Make sure there is a double stud on both sides. One under the header and one from the sill plate to the top plate. I've noticed a lot of contractors in Texas don't put the extra stud under the header. That stud supports most of the weight and the other on is for keeping the header in place. Make sure you nail both studs to each other.

These uprights are the right strength and can fit standard shelf supports which are good for 6 to 12 inch shelves. They are good enough for light-duty shelving and light weights. I needed shorter uprights so I cut them in half and anchored them into studs through sheetrock. I am a big fan of anchoring these supports solidly - not a fan of sheetrock screws (personal preference). Would not use these for heavy items unless the load can be spread out evenly. For heavy uprights, go for the double-row uprights for wider shelf supports.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Screws It's a great product with one huge exception: The screw holes in the uprights and their lack of countersinking, the lack of screw specifications and the lack of screws. I have installed thousands of dollars worth of this shelving for customers. I won't recommend or install it any more because of the pain of the install. The screw holes should be the right size, and properly beveled to accept a 2 inch (for hard surface mount) or 2 1/2 inch (for over drywall mount) color matching wood screw with a Robertson head. Rubbermaid should sell them with the product at a reasonable price. Without such screws I cannot easily or properly install the product. The screws need to be countersunk to permit a full range installation of shelving brackets into the uprights. Protruding screw heads not only prevent a bracket install above the heads, but prevent the use of adjacent slots as well. #8 screws have a head that is too big. I can make them work by custom countersinking, with a metal cutting countersink bit, each and every support hole. Thanks for the inconvenience, guys. #6 screws are a little better for countersink effort but are spindly, only available in max 2 inch length and so too weak for heavy loads on the shelves. I don't know if this is a Rubbermaid problem, or a Home Depot problem, but it's a problem.
