Customer Questions & Answers

What is the weight capacity of these shelves?

HOw much weight does each shelf hold?
Asked by: smitty
A lot. Not sure the exact number. However it depends if you are mounting to studs, or drywall anchors. Drywall anchors don't count on a lot. If to studs, mine I have about 350pnds on each shelving unit and it's holding just fine. I'd say "several hundred" as a rough estimate. Note that this laminate shelf set is like 80+ pounds though. The steel wire one is more like 15 pounds.

Where do I get shelving for my rubbermaid outdoor shed?

I have a Rubbermaid Max Jr. outdoor shed and want to add shelving and organizers for my outdoor yard equipment. I have found some for the Suncast outdoor shed but do not know if that unit fits my shed. I am looking for shelves that are not screwed in, but install inside the grooves of the shed.

250 dollars for 4 shelves and the mounting hardware? what makes this one 130 more the the 3 shelve unit? I mean its 1 shelf and 1 inch on the rails. One could purchase the 3 unit one for 120 and then spend the extra 20 bucks just for a shelf.

Customer Reviews

FastTrack Garage 4-Shelf 48 in. x 16 in. Laminate Shelving Kit with Rail is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy built, nice apperance, ample storage space **SHIPPING** The Shelf System was delivered in a super heavy box, everything was scratch free with no damage of any sort. All hardware was included/labeled to secure the system on drywall or studs. **INSTALLATION** It took me 1 hour to install it and I did it all by myself, it could’ve been quicker but the step that requires securing the brackets to the shelf was a bit tedious. Installation step does not explain it clearly. Best way to approach that step is, first place the shelf on the brackets and slightly secure the screw from the bracket to the shelf, then remove the shelf and lay it flat on the floor, then secure the plastic tabs on the shelf at the same spots marked when the shelf was sitting on the brackets. Once the plastic tabs are secured on the shelf then simply place the shelf back on the bracket and the plastic tabs would snap into the bracket right away. It’s quicker and accurate. I installed all 3 vertical posts on studs. I had no drywall so no time wasted finding studs. There is a probability that you wouldn’t find studs for all three posts. Rubbermaid included hardware for drywall with the plastic anchors. I would recommend replacing them with 3” toggle bolt anchors. Home Depot sells a pack of fifteen for 5 bucks, it’s worth looking into. Once installed, the gap between all fours shelves’ can be adjusted without any tools. I find it very convenient and practical. **TOOLS** A step ladder, drill with 1/8 & 9/64 drill bits, impact driver with Phillips bit, a thin & long Phillips screw driver and a magnetic level. If you are installing it on top of a drywall then you will also need a stud finder and 3/8 drill bit. **QUALITY AND APPEARANCE** I love its overall quality. Hang track, vertical posts are solid steel and shelves are laminated particle wood with smooth black finish. The shelves have industrial appearance, are fully capable of easily blending into your home décor if you install these in your walking closet, pantry, home office or study. I am not sure on maximum carrying capacity but I have tried about 200 lbs. per shelf, evenly distributed and it didn’t budge a bit. For now, I installed it in my garage but plan on moving it to my utility room since I love its appearance. In short, if you are in the market for a quality shelving system, look no further. I highly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Adjustable Product worked well. Adds a good deal of adjustable shelving space for loose or boxed items. Be sure to get the header bar level and true. The package is quite heavy so get some help loading in into your cart & vehicle. Feels well constructed and capable of handling the loads I'll have stored on it. Installation tools required are quite minimal. Instructions are clear and easy to understand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No studs necessary You can set this up against any wall. It's easy to setup and doesn't need to be anchored to wall studs. I like the fact that this can be setup very easily and it can hold up to 350lbs. It's also adjustable shelving space for loose items. The quality inspection on this item is spotty. Just make sure all the pieces are not damaged in the box if so then get a replacement from HD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good solid sheving system This product is a part of FastTrack garage system product line. Let me start with packaging. The package was heavy. Most of the weight being attributed to the laminate shelves that are well built and heavy. However the packaging can be improved. I am surprised that none of the shelves were either dinged or broken. The assembly is not that hard and you would need a drill. The important thing to remember is to put it on studs to give it adequate support. I took about 45 minutes to put the thing up once I had finalized the spot. The package comes with 48 inch upright shelf track and 25 inch extension to it which you can use if you want. As with most such shelving systems, it gives you flexibility of changing the placements of your shelves which is good. As the shelves are well built, you may put heavy items too on them which is good. Overall the product is good and has created more space in the garage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great clean shelving sets For the purpose of this review, I will be covering both the “Fast track 16 in x 48 in black laminate shelves” and the “fast track 4-shelf 46in steel wire shelving kit”. They are set up literally the same, only the shelves are different. If referring to the pictures you will see I have them mounted side by side, so instead of two 4’wide by 8’ high, it’s one full 8’wide by 8’ high set up. I then set all the solid black laminate shelves on the top two rows, and the wire shelves on the bottom two. Each of these install very easily. Biggest thing you need is to find out where your studs in the wall are. Yes it does come with dry wall anchors, but we all know a screw into a solid stud will have a much heavier workload, then an anchor into drywall. You essentially mount the tracks along the studs vertical. Typically studs are 12” apart, so once you find the first one, plan for it to have another stud every 12”. As seen in the pictures, the tracks are two pieces vertically. One is I think 48”, the other I think 24”. Giving you a total vertical length of 72” (6 feet). As you can see I mounted mine more than a foot off the ground. I mean the ground itself count’s as a platform, so ideally you want your first shelf a decent height above the ground. Mine is about 20”. I leave the ground for things I don’t want to drip onto my nice shelves such as fuel, landscaping equipment covered in dirt/grass, etc. As for a comparison, I would say the Black Laminate shelves hold more weight than the wire shelves. Not a lot more, but they are generally more solid shelves where as the wire shelves flex more. However, this is a double edged sword. Yes they can hold more, but the black laminate shelves themselves are already heavy. When carrying each shelving set in the box, the wire one was maybe 15pnds tops. The black laminate was likely closer to 80pnds. So imagine if you plan to have 200pnds of stuff on the shelves, one set will be 215, the other 280. Pretty big difference, especially if you are mounting to drywall. Not to mention filling up these shelves you can easily go over 200pnds especially if it’s a lot of paints/liquids/heavy materials. What’s the actual work load? That I’m not sure. I have all of my shelves full of heavy gear such as paint cans, buckets of bolts/nuts, heavy power tools, etc. I’d say between the two sets I’m likely pushing 500pnds of gear, and I’m completely confident that it’ll hold, and possibly even hold more weight. Installation only requires a screwdriver (recommend power drill), either a measuring tape or level (to install it “professionally”). If into drywall you will want a drill and a drill bit (see instructions for actual size) for the anchor. Both sets took me maybe 45 mins total to set up on my own. So expect maybe 20-30 mins each if by yourself. The shelf arms lock to the actual shelves securely. The wire shelves have a latch that locks them into place. The black laminate have screws in the shelf arms that go up into the actual shelves to secure them. Tips and tricks. Now you will notice in one of my pictures where the two join each other, it’s not a perfectly flush joint. Note that’s as good as it gets. Only way to make it perfectly flush would be to make some sort of brace between the two such as a 1x4 under the joint screw into both. For the wire mesh you can try to get a hold of 3/16” ID tubing and fit it around the wire mesh to “join” them together. I will say it does help on the outer most shelf arms, if you twist them outwards. What this does is it pulls the shelves against each other, prompting a better joint between the two. Again this is only if you have the shelves side by side with other shelves. If you have just the one set, it won’t apply. I will say I love these shelves. If I had to pick one over the other, I would pick the wire mesh for a few reasons. If the laminate gets wet, the laminate is water resistant, however the particle board under the laminate is very susceptible to water damage. So if it gets wet, it gets ruined. The wire shelves, don’t have an issue with water. Sure they are essentially steel with a rubber coating on them, so yeah if the rubber coating gets worn they could rust, but that’s likely something that won’t happen for a long time. Unless you are cutting on it, grinding, using a torch or something hot, etc. Not to mention, they are significantly more light weight. Last pro they have over the laminate is when using things that might be dripping/wet, the liquid falls through. Not to mention for those of you using it in a shop like myself, sawdust/dust/whatever doesn’t build up on wire shelves nearly as much as solid shelves. I still recommend both, though I do prefer the wire shelves above all else.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Damaged and incomplete I had the shelf delivered. The edges were damaged and some of the mounting rails had 1 screw / anchor while identical ones had 3. Trying to buy additional rails at the store to extend the setup was unsuccessful. Seems it was discontinued. The setup of the mounting holes and overall dimensions is in a way that it is impossible to hit 3 studs. The shelf is up in my garage but I don't dare to put heavy items on it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Goods received damaged When I went to pick up the shelves at the store, the edges were damaged because they were not packed well. Customer service was excellent in that they refunded my order and called .com to help me order it again and they gave me the sale price of my original order. So if the next set comes in better, I'll write another review. It could have just been an isue because of the packing.
