I used construction sized bags because that is what I was dumping and didn't want to dirty the can. I always use a liner to try and keep it clean. Gallon wise, I would go with the 50.

Barbara, are you asking if the lid locks? If this is your question try this: once you close the lid, press slightly on the top front you will hear a slight click that assures you the lid is locked. When you open it you we'll hear a snap sound which assures you the lid was locked or sealed tightly, somewhat like your Tupperware ;-)
I hope this help answer your question

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 346 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Big size trash can that handle a great size amount of trash (o: The roughneck trash can is very useful for around the house jobs. I've used it for tree trimmings, trash from a couple of family parties and hauling wood mulch. It has a hand grip on the lower end by the wheels for easy lifting to empty out the can. The lid snaps into place which is pretty nice during the windy days. The trash can has a wide wheel base that allows to pull it with a good amount of weight on it. It's pretty durable but it tends to bend a bit at the top handle while hauling it and while trying to lift it by the hand grip on the bottom the mid section of the can folds a bit. It's not an industrial grade trash can but for a basic around the house duties it should conquer the task. July 8, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great design and very practical! I personally love this trash receptacle for its practicality, lightweight and ease of use. There's some other things that give me reason to lower my rating. I don't think it was designed for the Arizona desert on a day when the outside temps are above 110 degrees. In our hot temperatures, the lid is way too flexible and becomes unattached consistently. I am constantly reattaching the lid. Part of that may be from the lid attachment design and I am adding some pictures to illustrate. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lives up to it's name! This can is tough! I'm brutal on equipment and I tend to use (read abuse) things well beyond their original intended use. This particular trash can was especially lucky because it got used as a sandblasting chamber for cleaning up 50 year old, greasy car parts! It withstood an absolute barrage of de-greasing solvent and 100 PSI sandblast media. Talk about a tough can! I'm impressed. Aside from the fact that its obviously made of space age, super strong plastics from the future, the design is really nice too. It rolls around easily, its lightweight and the top is easily and quickly removable. I really like this can, and I see myself continuing to abuse for many years to come. June 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by One big trashcan Rubbermaid Roughneck 45 Gal. Black Wheeled Trash Can with Lid is a large garbage can. I've seen these being used in my neighborhood and thought I'd give one a try. My old Brute which is also another line by Rubbermaid as their commercial product. I've had my old can for years and it has held up well, but the Sanitation guys are rough with it and its finally started cracking where they bang it on the truck to empty. I thought I'd try this Roughneck to replace it. This one has conveniences like wheels, a handle and an attached lid. The wheels are widely spaced, have a steel rod axle running along the bottom of the can. Its easier to move to the curb instead, as many do, dragging it and wearing out the bottom. The handle is long across the back and makes it easier to push and pull, but it did have more flex than I'd like. The lid locks on the back with formed molded hinges that keep it from flying away. The material its made of doesn't seem to be as thick as my old Brute trashcan, but it comes with a 10 year limited warranty which gives some assurance. The flexibility of the can Rubbermaid claims is a plus since it gives when crushed. Because of its large size standard size black trash bags to use as liners won't work. Overall, I'd say its a good trash can for the price and now we'll see what the Sanitation guys can do with it. July 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not quite rough This trash can is all right for light use and light loads but it was too flimsy for me. I wanted it because the other cans have small wheels and tip too easy which this one didn't. The top is very thin and came unhinged easily. I had to use thin trash bags to stretch over the top. I'll use this for recycle cans but not for grass clippings. Couldn't stretch a 45 gal.contractor bag over 45 gal square opening June 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by wheeled can I love a nice garbage can. It goes in front of my residence twice a week for pick up. I often forget to replace the cans. Usually when they are well priced I'll pick up a few cans and use them for storage until I need them for garbage. This rubbermaid can is so nice looking. It wheels well and is just the right size. I am going to stencil my address on the can. June 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Durable Trash Can This trash can is very nice to use I just sit it out back and when my trash is ready to take out I just raise the lid and drop it in and on garbage day I just wheel it to the curb then when it's picked up Just wheel it back up my driveway.Really easy to use . If you need a trash can try this one you won't be disappointed Great size and hold a lot June 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Capable Refuse Receptacle Finally a garbage can that cannot be broken! This unit seems to hold up quite well in everyday usage. In spite of their best efforts, our local sanitation engineers have not been able to destroy this garbage can yet. It is light weight and a good size, we rarely fill it in one week's time, thanks to recycling. The wheels are good quality, and are a necessity with a 100 foot long driveway. Works well, recommended!
