I used construction sized bags because that is what I was dumping and didn't want to dirty the can. I always use a liner to try and keep it clean. Gallon wise, I would go with the 50.

I have the older version of this can and yes, the lid is attached and removable but the tabs won't last long... at least if you have our refuse company :) My solution was to drill straight trough the handle and lid and install stainless steel hardware - long bolts with locking nuts. The cans lasted 20 years but the splits on the bottom at getting too big to keep repairing with duct tape :)

It IS removable, but I bet you won't want to take it off after you've gotten it snapped on. But, if you have your mind made up, You most definitely can take it off! My husband had a conceptual issue with getting ours to go on, but now it works fine. But I'm not taking the lid off any too casually.

Barbara, are you asking if the lid locks? If this is your question try this: once you close the lid, press slightly on the top front you will hear a slight click that assures you the lid is locked. When you open it you we'll hear a snap sound which assures you the lid was locked or sealed tightly, somewhat like your Tupperware ;-)
I hope this help answer your question

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 400 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Flimsy This can is much too flimsy for daily/weekly use. It would be fine for wheeling out a few times per year for some big backyard BBQ... but don't plan on making this your daily driver. For starters, the lid doesn't line up with the can perfectly... so if you have stinky diapers like us it's going to smell like an outhouse within a few hours of trash day. Secondly, the plastic used to construct this is so flimsy I can crush the can with one hand. If you have trash trucks with robotic arms like us they're going to rip this thing to pieces. The wheels and the handle is nice I guess... but they hardly make up for the low quality plastic used. August 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Roughneck 45 gal. Black Wheeled Trash Can I really like 2 wheels, they roll well over uneven surface with my hand on it's handle to pull it. the hinged lid clicked in to stay there. no need to pick up the lid back on the top of trash can. The hinges is located back on the handle that is a great design for opening and closing. The wide wheels make it easy to pull straight behind me. it is in my garage as the trash can with a black 45 gal trash bag inside till to be taken out for garbage truck pick up one a week. It might not be used for commercial heavy duty use. The plastic appears to be a lighter weight material. I use it for a few weeks. So far I am still pleased with it for a few weeks old. Rubbermaid is well-known reputation for good quality products. August 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Big size trash can that handle a great size amount of trash (o: The roughneck trash can is very useful for around the house jobs. I've used it for tree trimmings, trash from a couple of family parties and hauling wood mulch. It has a hand grip on the lower end by the wheels for easy lifting to empty out the can. The lid snaps into place which is pretty nice during the windy days. The trash can has a wide wheel base that allows to pull it with a good amount of weight on it. It's pretty durable but it tends to bend a bit at the top handle while hauling it and while trying to lift it by the hand grip on the bottom the mid section of the can folds a bit. It's not an industrial grade trash can but for a basic around the house duties it should conquer the task. July 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ROUGHNECK 45 GAL. BLACK WHEELED TRASH CAN WITH LID ROUGHNECK 45 GAL. BLACK WHEELED TRASH CAN WITH LID is a good sized trash can that is easy to assemble. It looks and feels very well made and sturdy. It came pretty much assembled and well packaged. I had no problems putting on the trash can together. Very easy to put together. Handle has a layer of soft red colored layer on it that makes it easy to hold and drag the trashcan. Easy to drag even when it is full due to big wheels. August 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Roughneck smooth ride trash can Trash can is large with wide opening at top to fit large stuffed bags into. Can is surprisingly sturdy despite light weight and despite being tall it is easy enough for my ten year old to roll it down the concrete driveway with relative ease even when can is full. The attached lid is a great feature that prevents the lid from getting blown away by the wind. My can is stored outside in the elements and does not allow water to seep in. Also I noticed the can does an adequate job at keeping aromas in can instead of poisoning are noses. July 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lives up to it's name! This can is tough! I'm brutal on equipment and I tend to use (read abuse) things well beyond their original intended use. This particular trash can was especially lucky because it got used as a sandblasting chamber for cleaning up 50 year old, greasy car parts! It withstood an absolute barrage of de-greasing solvent and 100 PSI sandblast media. Talk about a tough can! I'm impressed. Aside from the fact that its obviously made of space age, super strong plastics from the future, the design is really nice too. It rolls around easily, its lightweight and the top is easily and quickly removable. I really like this can, and I see myself continuing to abuse for many years to come. June 17, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Great design and very practical! I personally love this trash receptacle for its practicality, lightweight and ease of use. There's some other things that give me reason to lower my rating. I don't think it was designed for the Arizona desert on a day when the outside temps are above 110 degrees. In our hot temperatures, the lid is way too flexible and becomes unattached consistently. I am constantly reattaching the lid. Part of that may be from the lid attachment design and I am adding some pictures to illustrate. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for Recycling This is perfectly sized for putting a large trash bag in (keep clean of drips from cans and bottles) for recycling cans and bottles. Bag fits snugly so it doesn't fall in. Lid keeps out the rain water. The trash can wheels to where you need it easily and smoothly - no jerk like it has flat sides on the wheels. It's a little small for a family of 4's garbage for the week. July 26, 2016
