I love the regular chalked paint in the 30 oz can and use that all the time on my bare birch plywood. This spray paint however, does not cover well. I did 3 to 4 coats and could still see the wood grain through the paint. I don't have that problem when I use the regular paint. This spray paint seems thinner and runnier than the charcoal chalked spray paint which I use all the time for my wood signs. But I use the charcoal spray over painted wood and that might be the difference according to the manufacturer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! first impression when using this product for the first time was, "this is great!" As such, I was very surprised to see the many negative reviews here. So, before I begin, some background. The project for which I purchased this product is a set of ten pressed-back oak dining chairs. The thought of brush painting so many chairs was absolutely daunting; still, in the beginning, there was no way I was going to consider spray paint. Why? I am really not that good at spray painting. I am too impatient, and I usually wind up with tons of runs all over the place. Still, I knew it would take forever to do the chairs by hand, so I bought one can of the spray Chalked Paint and gave it a try. The chair wound up taking one and a half cans, but I was very, very happy with the results. First, I had almost no runs, and that is amazing for me! However, the few runs I did have masked so well! I just dabbed at them lightly with my fingertip, and then in the next coat, the run was completely unnoticeable! Second, I thought the coverage was good. The chair took a minimum of three coats, but I expected that, especially considering that I was trying to use a light touch as I sprayed. Others specifically say that the paint doesn't cover. Perhaps, it depends on what you are doing. For my chairs, no, the wood grain is not completely obliterated, but I didn't necessarily desire it to be. I want the chairs to have a more rustic look to them, and particularly with the pressed backs and the carved spindles, I don't have to do any distressing AT ALL! Maybe if I was doing a table top, I would feel differently; I just can't say. Nevertheless, my advice to readers would be to take the negative reviews with a grain of salt and at least give it a try. Buy just one can like I did and then make your decision. If your project is anything like mine, I really think you will love it!!!! And, let us not forget the time saved over brush painting! I have done a good deal of chalk painting around the house, and it is fairly time consuming. As I said, I couldn't imagine brush painting ten chairs! With the spray Chalked paint, I got three chairs done in just a matter of hours, and the taping was the worst of the experience! I am totally sold on this product!!! If you check out my pic, please note that I am in the process of painting my dining room...please try to overlook that. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You have to be patient, but it will be worth it As someone who has worked extensively with all different brands of chalk paint and milk paint, I was impressed when I used the Rustoleum "Chalked" product. The cans provided coverage that was much that same as their much more expensive counterparts. So I was excited to try to the SPRAY CAN option for all those pesky inner corners and whatnot. I have to be honest, the first time I used it I almost threw the whole can through the wall. There were runs everywhere and if you are used to working with chalk paint you are not used to a strong odor, but this stuff stinks! So after counting to ten, removing all of the spray bits out of my nose and walking away from my project for a few hours, I took the project outside (goodbye stink) and tried again (with a little mask so not nose hairs don't turn white). This time I took time to keep my spray range much farther back and the quick strokes have to be really quick; (no more runs). The project came out beautifully. I usually prefer to have a bit of subtle strokes in the paint, like a hand-painted chalk project would yield, but the spray painted version ends up buttery smooth and after the spray-on top coat, this thing feels solid as a rock. HD is very slow to stock these things and they only have a few colors available. They would do well to broaden their offering and stock this more consistently. I was very encouraged after spending some time with this new application method, so I went ahead and applied the linen white to a vinyl kitchen cabinet and it came out beautifully. We are going to be using this product to redo all of our kitchen cabinets. Note: it is definitely more expensive than using a paint brush or roller, but it give you a completely different end-result. So, don't lose heart, work with the product and I think you will be able to get what you need from it.

If the answer to get it to cover is to ALSO buy primer, thus two products instead of one, you might as well buy another brand's paint. I have used multiple brands of chalk paint and many DO NOT require a primer in addition to the paint. This product needs to be reengineered to be of a thicker consistency.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covered beautifully! Highly recommended I have never used chalf paint before and I have only spray painted some chairs about 20 years ago. I used this to paint an aluminum air return that is in the door to AC handler closet. It took about 3 coats to cover the ugly aluminum but it covered nicely. I used thin coats and allowed about an hour drying time between coats. I am very pleased with the results! I will try it next on some metal bifold doors. They are so ugly but I think this paint will fix that! Thank you Rustoleum for a great product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor coverage I bought this for touch ups as well. It is super runny and doesn't cover well at all, as well as taking forever to dry!

It turned out to be a disaster with waste of our money and most importantly TIME !! Stay away from this product. It is very runny, the coverage is not great, even after 2 coats. We gave up on this. We got it to paint a center table, and finally ended up making our own chalk paint with latex paint and plaster of paris recipe. Will not recommend this product at all. Save yourself some time and omit this, even though it is verytempting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sorry Rust Olium, not a good product. Bought 3 or 4 cans of this to paint a small cabinet. I am very professional and spray paint a lot of furniture and know how to do it with great results. I used another companys chalk paint spray, that is twice as expensive, but really good, before this. I then tried Rust Olium Chalked Paint Spray to save money. I can only write about this color, Linen White: Results? Terribe coverage. No matter how many times you spray and wait to dry and spray again. Still terrible. Waste of paint and time. This paint runs all the time. No matter how thin your spray layer, no matter how lightly done, no matter how long you shake the can, no matter what ou will run. All surfaces must lay flat horizontally to spray for a halfway non-runny result. This should not be. The other chalk spray paints I have used, never run, no matter at what angle the surface is. I spent 3 days painting a small night stand that should have taken 30 minutes, because of bad coverage and running. Slow to dry, no matter how thin the coat. Lastly, there is a toxic ingredient in this that I can not take. I wear a mask, do not breath while spraying, spray only outdoors, and I still get sick to my stomach every time I used this. Sorry rust olium.
