A foot is probably too much. Probably 8 inches would be OK.

Answer:
Rust-Oleum Rubberized Undercoating handles exposure to fluids and oil. It's all about frequency and duration. Less exposure will allow a longer life span of the paint. Best advice is to try to make sure you wash the painted surface periodically if you happen to spill fluid or oil onto the paint.

Answer:
Just wait until it is dry, so the top coat can dry and adhere properly.
If you wish, you can very lightly sand between coats to ensure each coat, once dry, has adhered to it. Cleaning between coats with tack cloth will be beneficial as well, so as to eliminate dust created from the sanding.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Application I really like this product, used it on my small Honda CRV- which came from New York. If you're not familiar, they use salt on the roads and the under side of the cars get corroded heavily. The paint goes on smooth and even, one can covers about 80% of the under-body of a small SUV, almost no over spray, so very clean, you'll want to do this when you have nice dry weather, meaning not too humid, sprays whether you hold the can side-ways or upside down, really a good job of covering rusty looking underside and it blends in good. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by looks like very good and needed product My 10 year old Elantra started showing signs of rust. I checked original undercoating and in areas of rust found spots where undercoating was missing. The biggest problem was, how to get to rusty places and clean them properly. I used grill brush then with regular brush I brushed off well all dirt and dust. Now easier part followed: spraying. Be aware, if you spray just tiny bit over your car, clean it immediately; it dries almost instantly. It would be great to lift the car on ramps to see and reach maybe more areas in need to protect. Unfortunately I don’t have ramps and even if I would have them I don’t think I would have guts to use them. Today I took advantage of another warm day and sprayed over the second coat. Since now on only time will show how well the undercoating will protect. Right now it looks great. November 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice product, different than expected Not like the old fashioned rubberized undercoating. Sprays on thinner and dries harder than other products I have used in the past. It also dries relatively quickly and leaves a nice looking finish. I was able to spay it evenly while holding the can in various positions, a nice feature while underneath a vehicle. I used it on my new pick-up and where it's visible, for example in the wheel wells, it looks nice. It's somewhat more expensive than their basic undercoating but easier to work with. Only time will tell how well it holds up but my initial opinion is very good. May 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Just As Described I bought this undercoating spray for my dad to use in the wheel wells and underbody of his RV. It sprays on easily and fairly evenly...his hand gets tired with a spray paint can but that didn't detract from his pleasure with the end result. The product coats well and it has been durable. Dad didn't have an issue with overspray on a clear non-windy day, but random drips are inevitable with spray paint cans. This product is oil-based so clean up of any stray splots will be messy; best bet is to wear rubber gloves and put down throw-away paper so that it can just be pitched when the project is completed. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to apply. The Rust-Oleum undercoating is easy to spray on. Will spray at any angle. Use it on a non-windy warm dry day. I used it on wheel wells. Made a great smooth rubbery surface. I would recommend really getting all the rust off you can before spraying over. I'm sure the undercoating would not prevent further rusting underneath the coating. July 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very user-friendly product that works! I pride myself in maintaining my vehicles-- and that's no easy feat, with the weather extremes we experience here in the upper Midwest. The salt and chemicals applied to winter roads may be a benefit to driving in snow & ice, but they certainly wreak havoc with the underside of our cars and trucks. So I was anxious to try out this undercoating spray paint from Rust-Oleum, to see if I could minimize winter's effect on my SUV. And, a year after applying the product, I can honestly say this Rust-Oleum Undercoating really works! First off, it is extremely easy to apply-- I simply washed the car thoroughly, focusing on the areas I planned to coat, and let the car dry. The coating sprayed on just like a can of spray paint, only a bit thicker. I did all the wheel wells twice, and had enough left over to hit a few spots in the front and rear that had a bit of rust and corrosion starting to appear.. And there was really no overspray-- something I had been concerned about before I used the product. I wanted to give an honest review, so I drove the SUV as normal over the winter and spring, and can truly state the undercoating has held up and protected vehicle. I'm impressed, and plan to coat other areas of the undercarriage before winter arrives again! August 17, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use undercoating spray After taking the bed off my pickup truck to install new brake lines, I took the opportunity to undercoat the frame. This can sprayed evenly and even worked at odd angles which is important when trying to cover all the bends in the frame. I went back to the store and bought a couple more cans in order to complete the job. December 9, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Glad you can use this yourself I used this on the underside of my trailer hitch which was scratched up and rusting. After scraping rust and cleaning the surface I easily applied this under-body spray. I didn't have to spray it like normal paint and moved a little but slower with my hand so a thicker coat could build up. It dries quickly and looks like the brand new undercoating out of a car factory. I could have used a regular black paint on under the hitch but this stuff is much more durable and tough. Rocks and debris under my truck could easily re-scrape my hitch but this product is rubbery and much more durable. What I really love about the product is that I can do it myself. You don't need a professional to apply or re-apply the coating. I highly recommend this product if you are redoing the coating for anything beneath your vehicle. I cannot speak to this in the long-term but the application is consistent and tough. I am confident it will perform well. September 6, 2013
