Customer Questions & Answers

May I use this paint to paint the bottom of a fiberglass tub/shower?

The bottom of the tub looks terrible no matter how much I clean it. I don't need to do the whole enclosure, just the bottom. This paint seems to be fine for fiberglass boats so why not a tub?
Asked by: golfergirl
Rust-Oleum Marine Coatings Topside Paint is not recommended for surfaces that are constantly submerged in water. If wanting to refresh a fiberglass tub, check out Rust-Oleum Specialty Tub and Tile Kits or Spray!

Does this require a primer

I am replacing the carpeting on a fiberglass covered wooden deck, what prep is required and can I make it nonslip?
Asked by: Fishfanatic
The use of a primer is not required. However, the use of a primer aids in coverage and adhesion. For fiberglass surfaces, regardless of age, thoroughly wash with a fiberglass cleaner to remove all traces of mold release agents and wax. Sand the gel coat with 80-120 grit sandpaper to create a dull, frosty appearance. Be sure to remove the sanding dust and residue. If the surface is in excellent condition, proceed with the application of the Topside Paint. Rough surfaces or imperfections should be repaired. Fill all nicks and gouges with a fiberglass repair compound, allow to harden and sand smooth, then remove the sanding dust. Follow with a coat of Marine Coatings Primer for Wood & Fiberglass to smooth the surface and provide a uniform base for the finish coat. Sand smooth and remove sanding dust. Proceed with application of the first coat of Topside Paint. To provide a safe, slip-resistant texture on decks, add one container of Marine Coatings Anti-Slip Additive to the mixed Topside Paint. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure compound is dispersed and remains in suspension.

Customer Reviews

1-qt. Gloss Oyster Topside Paint (Case of 4) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product for the price. I would have given it 5 stars but you have to wait 24 hours between coats and several days after the last coat before you start sanding and polishing. It did dry to a nice hard finish though.
