Answer:
We agree with Christine. Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X is a clear spray paint so the color underneath is going to show through. The clear color will have a matte finish, but the color of the surface will still show through. Try sanding the surface down to the sheen of your liking and then apply Rust-Oleum Painter Touch 2X Spray Paint on top.

Hello!
Thank you for your question!
Using this matte clear coat will lessen the sheen of the chrome, but it will not take it away completely. Since chrome is so shiny, just simply putting a matte finish on top of it will not lessen the sheen substantially. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Inconsistant This is my first attempt at a product review. I'm just so frustrated with this and don't want anyone else to go through this if they don't need to. I should have read these reviews prior to purchase though. My fault. I should mention that I do a lot of painting with aerosol cans, very often. Every now and then I like to mix it up and try different products, which led me to this clear. My experience with this product actually started out pretty good. I sanded and prepped the surfboard I had fixed and painted matte black, as per customer. Gave it a light sand and tack clothed it out. All ready to clear. I sprayed the bottom of the board first, and wow..bang on. This product did exactly what it was supposed to. Perfect. I let it dry..added a couple light coats and let it dry once more. I flipped the board, prepped it and was ready to spray. I only got through about 1/4 go the deck (top) of the board when I ran out. No big deal, I planned to use 2 cans anyhow. I shook up the second can and even tested it out on a piece of cardboard in case of any issues (just common practice for me) and it looked fine. Started spraying and after a few good passes, bam! Milky. A blotchy, milky mess. I kept going, thinking maybe it just needed to dry/cure but the result is the whole deck has a blue/grey tinge to it. Definitely not matte black. I tried, once dry, to sand/remove the clear to no avail. I now have no choice but to strip the board and start over. fantastic. This may seem like a trivial matter in the grand scheme of things, but when you use as much spray as I do, this is concerning. I can tell you I will not be using this product in the future. In fairness to Rust Oleum, you were close..for sure. It's the inconsistency that's gonna keep me far away from this stuff. Too bad, first can worked great. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Cheers. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ruined My Project I used this clear matte spray to put on a dresser and night stand I had sprayed in flat black. The matte spray went on cloudy and spotty. I thought at first it just need to dry, but no it totally looked awful when it dried. I ended up sanding it off and respraying all the pieces. I did return the unused cans. Now I am left not knowing how to put a protective coat on the pieces. July 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ruined project Would rate 0 stars if i could. Litterally barely applied any of the spray. Shook can for 20 mins. Took away all shine from the product which was supposed to have a mettalic finish. Left a milky white residue. 50 hours spent on plastic prop replica wasted. Would not reccomend. 0/10. May 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ruined months of priming and a perfect paint job For weeks I carefully sanded my project with ever finer coats of sand paper. Wiped clear with tack cloth, then laid coat after coat of primer, each with two days to a week to dry, and each coat with a hand sand of 400 grit. I patiently applied at least 4 coats of primer and three coats of paint. My project looked perfect after what seemed like countless times sanding out minor flaws and recoating.finally it came time to lay a clear coat to protect the paint. All coats where added to lightly sanded -dry- paint. I used only rustoleum product from one product line, the 2x cover primer, 2x cover satin paint, and 2x cover satin clear-coat - which should all be compatible. The clear coat chemically peeled the paint left a milky appearance and ruined the project I've been working on with my free time for months (if you include the wood work, and design, and electronics, more than a year. As soon as I applied the clear coat it was milky white, destroying the black color.. As the first coat began to dry it peeled my paint and primer off. Completely destroying weeks and weeks of work. I spend every signle free good weathered weekend this summer on this and it has all be lost. Hundreds of dollars in rustoleum paint and primer, and clear coat. Outside temperature was about 17 degrees, can and project was room temperature, wiped clean with water only and dryed over night in my living room. I obsessively followed the directions on the can. This product is garbage and ruined my job. It chemically peeled the paint. I now must start the entire painting project all over again. Buy a stack of more sand paper and spend all winter sanding everything back to wood and start again. I hand built a set of furniture. I fear my two year project is ruined. October 4, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by horrible. worst product ever!! Spent hours sanding then painting my grandma's old bench with black chalk paint. I love chank paint(not chalkboard paint-chalk paint is different) because its waterbased yet adhears to anything-the only catch of chalk paint is that it needs a clear coat. Last time i chalk painted furniture the satin polyacrylic came out too shiny for my taste and the brush strokes drove me nuts. I wanted matte for this project. This spray was recomended by the paint guy at HD. I bought two cans and sprayed the whole thing following the directions to a tee. It was the middle of summer in ca so it was not humid. It looked dusty, milky white, and was covered in tiny little bubbles that covered it in a weird 3d texture. I literally cried. After it dried i had to sand it down and start over. Luckily i had made my own chalk paint with black marquee paint and primer in one so it only took two coats to cover the white mess. It still didnt look perfect but at that point it was just a miracle that the spray was mostly hidden at all. Luckily i also found a matte waterbased brush on poly at lowes so my bench was saved. Its been outside on the porch for the last year and has survived the rain, sun, and heat fairly well. So im happy now. But i am blown away that this horrible product is still on the market. I am an experienced DIYer and proffessional decorator. If you care about your project please stay away from this. The only reason my bench was salvaged was because i could repaint it. If you have something you cant repaint please dont even look at this stuff. Its not worth it. It will ruin anything it touches and cover it in white frothy dust. Worst product i have ever bought. I think i have PTSD from it. Get the brush on matte polyacrylic from rustolem. Soooo worth it. I use it for everything now. June 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Destroyed hundreds of hours of work This product turned into tiny beads of white dust that globbed onto the surface. Some of them wiped off like dust, the others bubbled up like blisters that would fall off, taking the paint beneath with it. It was like it gave my project small pox. I will never use another Rustoleum product again. April 17, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ruined custom paint job. Used this product as a finish on a custom MSU fire helmet. Completely destroyed the project. Left a milky finish in some spots. 3 months later, matte clear finish began to separate from colored paint underneath, leaving it looking like a 3 day old glazed donut. Shame on me for not reading reviews. Luckily the repaint project is going well. This product is hot garbage. December 13, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Hesitant to try again I purchased this clear coat to spray over some doorknobs I had painted Oil Rubbed Bronze, I followed all the instructions and when it was time for the clear coat I applied a very light mist of it. It instantly "fogged' up my knobs and turned them a matte grey. I called Rustoleum customer service, they were very friendly and helpful - they advised this could happen if the can was exposed to moisture. I've used Rustoleum products in the past and have had no issues, I think this was just a fluke. I was able to strip the paint and start all over - without even applying a top coat this time.
