do you have to sand furniture before using this

Asked by: grandmaidaho06
If you wish to apply Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Ultra Cover Primer to bare wood you will not need to sand. Previously coated surfaces must be sound and in good condition. Smooth, hard, or glossy finishes should be scarified by sanding to create a surface profile. The Painter’s Touch Primers are compatible with most coatings, but a test patch is suggested.

Can this be used on vinyl?

I am repainting an old army storage footlocker that has a vinyl canvas on the outside.
Asked by: mbondi
Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover Painters Touch Flat Gray Primer is not formulated to adhere to a vinyl surface. Take a look at Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer instead. This is an all surface primer and will adhere to vinyl. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-31-5-oz-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Gray-Primer-and-Sealer-Case-of-4-286258/205843205

Nothing too fancy. Had a can of Rust-oleum Ultra Cover paint (Espresso color) that I used to pain the support poles, so I figured I'd use up the rest of the can. The support poles were primered when we bought the house. Took one coat and then a touch-up coat to finish up the support poles. Figured I would stick with Rust-oleum, since I liked the paint. I primed up my shelves (and the previously painted wall where the bookshelf is mounted with this product......wasn't real impressed with it's "fill" factor, but don't really care, since it is a cheap, pine bookshelf. I am now on my THIRD coat of paint trying to get even coverage over this primer, and it will require a 4th coat to get it to look good. At this point, I am just slapping paint on it, and hoping it won't run too much. Now, I'm not a professional painter, but I have painted bare wood before WITHOUT using any primer whatsoever, and THAT usually takes 3 coats. So, really, what was the point in using this product at ALL? Can't recommend it, and I won't ever use it again. Get Kilz or something else. This stuff is junk.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked fine as a primer Seems to be a fine primer, I'm no expert. Use multiple coats, sand lightly in between to get the smoothest possible finish.
