I would like to paint a gas fireplace mantel. ( the all in 1 unit like is sold at Home Depot) is this a good paint for such purpose or do I need a heat resistant paint? if so can you recommend what I need?
Asked by: Ncshopper
This is not a high temperature paint and I cannot recommend it for your particular application. I would use a high temperature spray paint such as Rust-Oleum's "Almond High Heat Spray Paint" in 12 ounce cans that is designed for high heat resistance. This high heat paint is also available at Home Depot.

I've used this type of paint on several projects the oil base for metal and the water base for wood. I like it and the color selection very much. It applies easily and color lasts outdoors for a fair amount of time

This is the first time my wife and I ever used the Rust-Oleum "Ultra Cover." The results were excellent and exceeded our expectations. We used it to paint a very old factory green finished two chair "bar height" patio set. I cut the height of the table and chairs to "normal height" using my hand held electric tools. Before painting we machine (orbital sander) sanded the tubes and structure with 150 grit wet/dry sandpaper to, in some places, the base metal. We eliminated the oxidation (aluminum) and rust (steel) carefully so that the paint would take to the surface. We applied the paint using a 1/4" nap roller so as to provide a pebbly like finish. Places where the roller couldn't reach we used a professional painters 1" wide brush that doesn't loose bristles. A second coat after 6 hours provided an excellent, durable finish. We reupholstered the chairs with "Sunbrella" fabric following our patio's color palette. Note of Caution - Do not pour out more paint than you can use in fifteen minutes or the consistency will begin to thicken and ruin your application. Always insure that the paint is "fresh" every time you apply it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from All Purpose Paint..It Was Not... I was painting our Bedroom night stands. I wasn't sure what to purchase to get the job done. I asked a sales associate and this is what she recommended. Don't know if she did't know what she was talking about or the paint was of poor quality for what I needed. Nevertheless, My night stands are not what I wanted. Paint was so sticky you could not go over it if you missed a spot. I actually had to give it a distress look for them so as to be able to use them. Was not happy. Also the color on the outside of the can (egg shell) was not true my night stand are a light gray.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good coverage, not quite as hi sheen as I would have liked on Particle board, primed Over primed particleboard it went on great, good coverage and flowed nice. The end product did not have the really high gloss that I was looking for but it was acceptable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great color! Very nice color, but it took 4 coats to cover my black steel basement beams. And that was AFTER I'd scrubbed them clean with hot water, bleach, and pine sol. So if you're going to cover something black, be SURE to use primer first. But once it's primed, the paint looks great! I wound up figuring that out after the 3rd coat & put primer on the areas where the black was still bleeding through. It was like oil was on the beam & the paint just rolled off in some areas as it was drying. But once I put Kilz primer on there, which didn't roll off, the paint stuck and it looked great.
