A Google search for "'kona brown' purple" brought me here as I had the same concerns. After applying it to the project, I can tell you this:
Yes, it is purple in the can, no matter how much you mix it.
Yes, it applies purple to project.
No, it does not stay purple. It starts to turn 'kona brown' within a few minutes.

I am not sure why the Rust-oleum rep is "shocked" by this; it is their product and they should know this.
In any case, when you see purple, do not get concerned, it is normal. Read Less

I just opened a brand new can, 2 in fact. Each look purple. I shook and stir, same result. I'm taking back to see if shaken at store changes the color. I did not apply

Answer:
That is odd. Please keep in mind different types of wood can affect the outcome of the color of the wood stain. For this reason, we recommend to always test your stain to verify the desired color. Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job. Please call us at 877-385-8155 to discuss further.

Why does my dresser stay purple

I have read that Kona brown starts purple and dries dark brown. I painted my dresser and let it dry over night and it is still purple. Why did't the color turn brown? I sanded the dresser and I applied primer. Do I need to add a second coat before it turns dark brown? What should I do here?

I just opened my can after shaking it up and it's dark stinking purple. Actually found this searching to see if it was normal. Sort of scared to continue because I don't want purple shelves....

In my experience this paint will only come out purple if you don't mix/stir it well enough before you apply it. This is the color I got after less than 10 mins after applying.

Hi. Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover in Kona should not be purple. Did you stir the paint before application? Please call Rust-Oleum at (877) 385-8155 if the color did not come out to your liking.

Answer:
Yes I think it will cover two white nite stands...two coats will be close but I think you could do it. I would recommend a light sanding first. * Note: If the night stands are varnished you will want to remove the varnish first...which can be done with sanding. Good luck.

Answer:
One quart of Painter's Touch Ultra Cover paint will cover approximately 120 square feet. We suggest that you lightly sand glossy surfaces and apply a primer as well.
Applying a primer provides superior adhesion and hiding.

Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover brush-on paint is a water-based acrylic paint. The Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Sprays are an oil-based paint.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good paint I use this paint for my basement wooden staircases. Since this is just for the basement, I do not even bother sanding and priming it. I applied the first coat of paint, waited for a few hours until it completely dried out and then the second coat to smooth everything out and voila. April 24, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't waste your money I am hugely disappointed in this product. I bought Ultra Cover Multi-Purpose Gloss Brush-On Paint kona color and primer at Home Depot to paint a piece of furniture. I sanded, primed, and also heated my garage to make sure I was with in the temperature parameters on the label. I also checked the weather online to make sure I was with in the humidity levels listed on the can. Despite all of that and despite using a brush as instructed, the finished product was a streaky mess. It looks horrible. Do not believe the label when it says the paint will work down to 50 degrees and 80% humidity. I am very frustrated. I have to sand it down and start over despite following all the label instruction. If the paint doesn’t really work well within the wide label parameters then they should narrow the conditions for use so people don’t waste their time and money. Now I am out my time and money. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Yes...It does dry brown My first impression of the "PURPLE" looking paint was to return it to the store. After reading other's reviews, I reassured myself that it was not mixed by some color blind bozo. I was only using it to paint 30 year old laminated pop up trailer cabinets (sorry pros..I couldn't bring myself to use oil base) so I figured it was worth a try. It probably would have looked a whole lot better had it not better hotter than heck while painting and had I taken the time to sand and patch the aged laminate, but that aside, I am impressed at how it came out. My pop up is now revived enough to spend another 15 years sitting in my yard for my hot night camp outs. And it is indeed a beautiful kona brown. August 13, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by its not really purple Like all the others I was really disappointed when I opened the can. I re checked the color thinking I had picked up purple, stirred it...still purple so I searched "kona brown" thinking Kona Brown was actually purple...and found this page and very much appreciated reading the reviews. It was like melted chocolate on the floor, looks wonderful. Im not sure how it will hold up but will test it...its only temporary on this floor anyway but I hope it holds up as I love the color it dried as. September 6, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rust-Oleum DOES cover well! It takes a couple of coats depending on what you're painting but it covers great when done and looks like dark wood. Great contrast color that goes with everything that you don't want to be black. Small can goes a long way when rolling out or trimming but for a big project, maybe two cans. When using a paint brush, you will need more than one coat. Dry time inbetween coats fast. Thanks to this product, I don't have to replace my kitchen cabinets at this time... looks new. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great paint for furniture projects I really like this product. I used it to paint a wooden dog crate that is meant to function as a piece of furniture (think end table). The paint is thin enough that the grain of the wood can show through. Also, the dark espresso brown color matches well with today's decor. My only issue is I wish they sold this in a semi-gloss, I really didn't want the high gloss but there was no other option. May 7, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by One of the worst I've tried I found this paint impossible to work with. It dried so quickly that you could only make maximum two brush strokes before it became tacky. A third stroke would remove what you put down. Horrible. Been doing renovations for 20 years and usually spray, but decided to try this. Had to get another product and got better results with foam roller and thinner application of paint. This stuff was made for amateurs. August 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic! This paint made me so happy! It looked purple! even after I stirred it, so I wasn't sure at first. As it dried (quickly) it turned into a rich, dark glossy brown which was exactly what I needed! Note: follow the directions for application and use a brush (not foam or roller). It makes all the difference in coverage. October 29, 2012
