I plan to use this on natural-finished wood furniture. I already sanded it, but not sure if I need a primer and what primer to use.

Answer:
If you have sanded the wood, I don't think you'll need to prime it. It provides good coverage.

We would advise using a primer such as Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, or Ultra Cover 2x Primer.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.7 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a Dark Brown Color Not Espresso! The color I need is what is on the can's label. That is not the color in the can. I stirred it really well thinking the dark pigment might be on the bottom of the can but it still is more like a dark gray- brown. See picture of the paint next to the color on the can's label. I tried rolling it on thinking it might be darker when painted but to no avail. It's a little irritating the the company responded to another reviewer suggesting that it's some other explanation when this is clearly not the color espresso by any definition. This is a big hassle bc I had to wipe off the paint, will have to return it--if they will accept the return, and then keep searching to find the correct color. This ruined my timeline to paint and install shelves. November 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Wrong color! The "espresso" color I purchased 3 months ago and one I purchased today are totally different. Did you change technology? Now, I get half painting in one hue and half in another! Where can I find the same color as previously? June 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nice its not quite as dark as shown, its more of a dark chocolate color but still works well with my color scheme and looks great!!! but then again color has to do with how many coats/ how thick you apply it. I actually painted my kitchen cabinets with it, a few thin coats and you can still see the wood grain, im an avid rustoleum customer. the spray paint is also great, the colors, the coverage. it is far superior to other brands out there. anyone deciding to buy new cabinets try this first!!!! you will save so much money and get the same effect! Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not really expresso! Everything about the paint is good. Covers well. If you need something more durable go with oil based. The problem I have with this is the color it is not expresso it's more like chocolate so if your trying to match expresso furniture don't use this paint.to July 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great paint! I used this to paint the top of my dining room table, which was an older light oak look. I sanded it well first and then cleaned it. Then I used a paint brush to paint this on. It went on smoothly and evenly. It was very easy to use. My table looks like it's dark wood now and you really can't tell that it's painted unless you really look. I am very happy with this product. July 14, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ultra Cover?? Bought expresso, and a can of the red to paint two wooden adirondack chair and a small table. All were new wood that we primed before painting, This paint is so thin, it runs like crazy, and it's taken 2-3 coats to get decent coverage. Not happy at all with the performance of this product and would not reccomend it for anything other than a flat horizontal surface. June 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great coverage! Would purchase again! We were painting a white cabinet, so to get complete, flawless coverage, it took 3 coats. It looks awesome. I used a mini roller for most of the painting, and that worked great. LOVE the finished product! Wish I had done it sooner! May 26, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Loved this paint - until the second can of paint was a completely different color than the first! Bought a third paint and again lighter than the first can - even had home depot shake the can in their machine. This paint has caused me so much work and now I have to repaint the entire cabinets AGAIN so they match the drawers..... October 6, 2014
