Answer:
While a primer isn't absolutely necessary, you'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes in most projects. Primers make colors pop, help topcoats go on more efficiently and prepare surfaces like bare wood, metal, and rust before painting. One to two light coats of primer should be sufficient.

Rust-Oleum Professional Gloss Protective Enamel may be applied directly to the surface without a primer. However for bare wood a primer will help with even absorption and coverage of the chosen topcoat. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is an excellent primer and can be top coated after only 1 hour. I am considering using this paint for a fiberglass experimental airplane project. The project has been filled and primed for a very smooth surface. I have used the spray can product with great results for small parts like spinners and wheel pants. I have use Imron in the past for painting such projects, but the results were not as good as I would like and the cost is crazy now. Also I live in CA so it is not even available. Your product looks great when sprayed and seems to last for years. Do you see any problems with possible fuel exposure around vent areas and does this paint have some flex in it?

Thank you

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best High Preformace Enamel I was a N.A.C.E. trained inspector for 10 years, after leaving the "Oil Field" and starting my own business, I already knew what to look for in a "High Performance Enamel"- Rustoleum is the "Top of the Line" for long lasting and VERY High Quality products, metal or wood (prime differently) this is a 20+ year coating, I use 2 coats over properly prepared surfaces June 21, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT PAINT PRODUCT! We used this at our condo association in order to paint the exterior doors to all of our units - the paint went on easy - we used the little 2" rollers to apply - dried to a beautiful white glossy look - and cleaned up easily - would highly recommend this product! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product delivers what is expected on initial usage. The components of this product delivers just as described. There were certain jobs the contractor managed and others I did individually. So being a first time user I was excited upon the product's handling and outcome. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by We used this paint to restripe our parking lot. Did a good job. I was very happy with the way it went on as striping in our small parking lot. It appears to be hold up very well. Haven't gone thru a 110+ degree summer yet, but I suspect it will hold up there too. January 14, 2014
