Why are so many people reporting durability issues? Is there any recourse if the product does not perform?

It looks like nearly 40% of the reviews rate this product "poor" and are consistent in their reports of the product looking good to start, but peeling up within weeks or months #how many other initially happy reviewers did not go back to update their review if the product peeled later?#. The standard line from Rustoleum is that it will last 10 years or more without peeling, but how do they explain the actual experience of these people? Something is off here and I'd like to understand better before spending time and money on this. Anyone out there happy with the longevity of the product #details please#. Rustoleum, any explanation? Any help if I'm not happy with the performance?

Answer:
I applied the product to my deck in June & July 2013. By March 2014 it was peeling and flaking. I originally provided a positive review because the product covers well when applied, but now I am sanding the Rustoleum Restore product off my deck boards and using a competitor's product cover my deck AGAIN. I would not use this product!

Rustoleum did give us a full refund. As long as you have your proof of purchase they should back up the warranty.

Answer:
Restore is a great product but application can be tricky to get just right. You have to prepare your surface carefully and apply the product in the proper conditions. Full preparation and application instructions can be found on the packaging as well as the manufacturer's website.
In the event that you are not satisfied with the results, Restore is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Answer:
The outdoor rug will trap the moisture against the product and moisture in the wood below will cause the product to peel sooner.

Please allow a minimum of 3-5 days before covering the surface with a rug. Please note that covering the surface can extend the complete dry time. Restore 10X can take up to 4 weeks to fully cure.

Restore holds up very well to snow. We recommend using a plastic shovel to reduce the risk of scratching the surface.

Answer:
Deck & Concrete Restore should only be used on horizontal surfaces. For vertical surfaces, check out our newest product, Vertical Restore.
Restore products will adhere to both treated and untreated wood. We recommend allowing new wood to age for a minimum of 6 months to prevent lifting of the coating.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 27 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding! Although this product is intended for outdoor use, we were desperate for something that would handle our horrendous basement floor. We had pulled up foam-backed carpeting which left a nightmare of foam and adhesive that had to be treated and scraped. Once we got it as good as it was going to get, and after much discouragement, we tried Restore and got our miracle. After only one coat, as pictured, it covered beautifully with only a few hours of moderate effort. We couldn't be more pleased. Thanks, Rustoleum! August 18, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Stuff! This stuff is awesome. Covers splits in the wood. Fills in pits and screw heads. Makes a worn 12 year old deck floor look like new. It is great. Very thick product. I little difficult to work with but well worth the final result. Against the advise of the Home depot paint department, We cheated and used a 3/8" Nap paint roller for the second coat. They said it wouldnt work but we wanted a smoother final finish. it turned out awesome! Very, very happy. July 31, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible product! Do not buy! We put this on our one year old deck last summer. By spring the paint was peeling up all over the deck. We spent $450 on this paint in which we had to turn around and scrape off. Very disappointing. Do not buy! May 20, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't last We have a large covered deck that was stained originally (at least ten years ago). It looked very poor when we bought the house, so we thoroughly pressure washed the deck and let it dry. A few days later we spent an entire weekend painting the deck, railings, support poles, everything... with this product and it looked beautiful. It is very hard to use, as it is so thick and textured. It takes a lot of product (we went through 6 or 8 buckets) and covers you head to toe with splatter, as well as any surrounding areas. It was a miserable experience, but it looked so nice that we got lots of compliments and our contractor friends were even impressed enough to recommend it to their clients. That was August of 2013. By January, we noticed the paint chipping off of the deck. It is now April 2014 (only 8 months after painting) and it looks horrible! And the deck is not used at all in the winter! It basically sat untouched all season long and started to peel by itself. You can run your finger across any finished area it and it just chips right off like nothing. An approximately $800 project that was miserable to do in the first place just got even worse and I have no idea how we could ever get ALL of the remaining texture off support beams and railing and steps, etc... This product is expensive junk. Save yourself the hassle and stain your deck or find a better more reliable paint. April 18, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not long lasting I bought this product last spring. I liked the color and thickness of this deck restorer and I had no problem with the application. It only lasted about 6 months and then started flaking off like really old paint. I now will have to restore my deck with something else and may just go with deck paint because I painted my railing with deck paint and it is not cracking or pealing at all. In conclusion, I had high hopes for this product but it didn't last as well as it said it would. I cannot recommend this product at all. April 6, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not waste you money I used this on my deck and it didn't even last one year. When you try to get answers for rustolium they just give you a run around and hope you forget about it because they forget about you. Forget about getting your money back. Now I have seen three decks that have used this product and all of the have blistered and are pealing in less than a year. April 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product I painted my deck 2 years ago and it still looks great. My deck had not been maintained in many years before I bought this house. the deck had cracked badly. This product not only filled the cracks it also stopped spintering. April 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love our deck! We are shocked to read some of the reviews for Restore! We LOVED it! Our deck had been painted several times and it was a mess. We power washed it and sanded it down, (redwood) then applied Restore. The wood was cracking bad and we were afraid it was a lost cause. It took more Restore than we originally planned but that was 4+ years ago and it still looks great! Not sure why some had such problems but we highly recommend it! It honestly looks like it is an expensive Trex deck! April 29, 2014
