Customer Questions & Answers

Would this be good for wooden porch rails and pockets over flaking and cracked paint?

Asked by: rick
Rust-Oleum Restore 4X Deck Coat may be applied over a previous finish. Clean the surface using a deck brush and Restore Deck & Concrete Cleaner. The surface must be clean and free of dirt, grease, mildew and organic growth. Loose paint needs to be scraped off of the surface. Once the surfaces are prepared prime with Restore Deck Start Wood Primer. This will ensure the 4X properly bonds to the painted surface. http://www.homedepot.com/s/Deckstart?NCNI-5

Asked by: George
Happy to help, George. If you are trying to remove Rust-Oleum Restore 4X Deck Coat, we recommend the use of a pressure washer, or a stripper designed to remove acrylic deck stains/ coatings. Such as Rust-Oleum Wolman DeckStrip-ASR. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-1-gal-DeckStrip-ASR-Acrylic-Stain-Remover-Case-of-4-14706/204744696

how many years can I expect out of this paint before having to repaint?

Asked by: lifer
We spent a fortune putting it on our decks summer of 2015, it started peeling off spring of 2016. Followed the directions exactly. So, probably not long.

Application is a nightmare and it DOES NOT last. Applied this to my deck last summer and it is coming up in patches. Horrible product. Save your money, this is garbage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good product I tried to use this on a shed floor made out of 3/4" OSB which is not very rough. Tried using a roller and the product was way too thick. Tried a brush and that did not work either. Finally I had to thin the the product a lot to even be able to brush it on. Even then it was hard to get it into the pores of the OSB. If you like excessive labor to install then this product is for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peels off like plastic wrap After following the directions for cleaning & prep work, primed and coated entire deck looked great for about 6 weeks then it looked like it was 10 years old, sanded, cleaned re applied .. Stuff still sucks in heavy NY WINTER doesn't last a year ..... Would not recommend to my worst enemy ....

Following all prep directions using the companion product primer, I applied multiple coats for thorough coverage. Less than 1 year later, areas of the surface bubbled and peeled away. Huge expensive mess.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Bother! We spent a fortune putting this on our decks. We used this product late Summer 2015 and it started peeling Spring 2016. We followed the exact directions, including the preparation directions and can't believe the product didn't even last an entire year. We have a huge deck and this was such a waste of money. Now we have to try to find a different product and start the process all over again. I'm disappointed in HD for recommending this product. Do not waste your time and money!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this Cleaned my deck with a power washer. Very careful to follow the instructions. Applied this spring. By the end of the summer it was starting to peel. Now it is the second summer and it looks terrible. Peeling every where and to hot to stand on with your bear feet. Too much work involved for such terrible results. If I had receipts I would ask for my money back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fine Product for old decks! I have seen some of the poor reviews and must say that the application is particular and the surface MUST be clean and dry - but I have applied this product and Restore 10x to more than 750 sq ft of deck with wonderful results. It has been down for going on three years and there are only a couple of places I need to reapply - that mostly due to places where bird seed held water against the deck and loosened the paint. It is pretty pricey but compared to replacing the old deck, this is less than 10% of what I would have spent on a refurbished deck. Coverage is optimistic but I am judging it based upon a pretty worn deck. The Restore 4x coverage was as advertised. I have a small amount more to cover this year and will have no reservations about using Restore!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looked good for a month or so! Looked great for around a month. Then it started pealing. Not to mention it was hotter than our tile portion of our patio. Wasnt impressed. Spent lots of money and time to now have to completely redo it. Very disappointed
