Answer:
Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paint can be applied to previously coated surfaces. It is important to be sure the surface is sound and in good condition. Smooth, hard or glossy surfaces should be sanded to create a surface profile before application.

Hello Gfaith, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
If you lightly sand and then clean the painted surface, this paint will adhere well.
I hope this helps,
Chris.

One can of Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paint will cover approximately 7 square feet. Assuming your 32 square foot piece of plywood will require at least 2 coats, we recommend purchasing about 10 cans. For better coverage of a large flat surface, try Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint, in the brush on form. Answer:
TJ, we do not recommend using spray paint indoors as it is difficult to acquire proper ventilation for this application. For this reason, if applying Chalkboard Paint to an entire wall, we suggest using Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint in the brush on form. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Specialty-30-oz-Flat-Black-Chalkboard-Paint-206540/100141287

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good product Paint worked great for chalk board on wall project! May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Make anything into a chalkboard! I love the idea of making anything into a chalkboard surface. The quality of paint is great, only issue I had while spray painting wood or glass, the paint seems to run causing imperfections. I tried using brushes to smooth out those spots but it thins the paint. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product I used the chalkboard spray paint to refinish a small hand-held chalkboard that had become shiny from years of erasing. I followed the instructions on the can and sanded the chalkboard with fine sandpaper. I then wiped the dust off and sprayed the paint on the chalkboard. Per the instructions, I let the paint cure for 24 hours, then rubbed the new finish with the side of a piece of chalk, then erased the chalk and used the board. The results were excellent. Before applying this paint to a smooth surface, sand it. March 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by chalkboard spray paint Nice product, but almost ran out of paint on our project. Next time I'll buy 2 cans just to be sure we have enough. March 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good! But.. I purchased this product to do a chalkboard wall in my kitchen. It sprayed on well, was SUPER easy and looks fantastic. I painted a 7 ft by 1 ft area and used the whole can. I love the look, and the kids love drawing on it. However, it doesn't erase very well unless you use a damp cloth. PROBLEM: there was black "dust" everywhere!! It is not visible to the eye, but our feet were black for days despite mopping the whole house. The paint was very hard to remove from skin, and made a huge mess of my tub and ruined a few pairs of socks. Lesson learned, spray painting to that extent in a home is not recommended. I would use this product again for something I can paint out doors, but if I was going to do a wall again I would try the roll on. October 25, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Quick and Easy I bought this product because a friend wanted chalkboard wine glasses for a wedding shower. After taping off the glasses and cleaning them with rubbing alcohol, I sprayed them and found short spurts worked better than my usual sweeping motion. I did apply several coats. I let the glasses dry for two days before gently hand washing. After the glasses were used, there were noticeable spots where the paint came off. I don't know if I should have sanded the glasses first, but the directions didn't say that was necessary. While the price is reasonable, and the initial results were great, the subsequent use of the glasses shows the product is probably not best suited for glass. August 25, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Really? It scratches off so easy. After 48 ish hours I tried to use it with regular school stick chalk it scratched off okay whatever so I figured I could only use chalk pens nope.. it scratches off the paint too. Not to mention my entire house body & face is covered in the stuff. August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best chalkboard paint I absolutely love this spray paint! I have tried other brands before but this one has always worked the best for me. I have used it on wood and glass and I have never had any issues with it. August 12, 2015
