Customer Questions & Answers

Where can we see samples of these colors?

Asked by: Anonymous
Be careful when selecting color chip on the can are darker than the real tinted color. Example: -banner blue - appears to be a dark navy blue on the side of the can. In reality - color is a shade slightly darker than royal blue. I had the paint tinted twice - trying to acheive navy color without success. The purple was the same issue - can color appeared darker than the real color. I ended up trying the banner blue because the paint tinting staff convinced me that it would be fine since the color dries darker. Which is true but the color still wasn't navy.

can this chalkboard paint be used on laminate countertops?

Asked by: tlyorkie
Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint will adhere to laminate; however, we do not recommend using this product on a countertop. It is not designed to withstand the everyday wear and tear of a countertop surface; it also does not contain the antimicrobial properties of most countertop coatings.

Can this product be used on a plastic table top?

Asked by: Docmac1960
Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint can be applied to wood, metal, masonry, drywall, plaster, glass, concrete, terra cotta, paperboard, and hardwood. For adhesion to a plastic surface, we recommend priming first with an adhesion promoting primer such as Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer.

Is a primer absolutely necessary for this type of paint?

Asked by: jimmy
Great question, Jimmy! While a primer is not absolutely necessary with Rust-Oleum Specialty Tintable Chalkboard Paint, it is especially recommended for bare wood and metal to help with adhesion and coverage. You can apply Chalkboard Paint 2 hours after applying the primer. After priming bare wood, sand lightly to smooth out the surface. We recommend using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover Brush-on Primer if a primer is desired!

Customer Reviews

29 oz. Tintable Chalkboard Paint is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can easily roll this I read a review stating that the package was incorrect and you couldn't roll this paint. Completely untrue! I have painted this stuff multiple times and it always rolls great. You have to use a super smooth foam roller and your coats should be thin as they always should be when rolling paint. Maybe if you just dipped the roller into the paint and didn't roll it out on tray like you are suppose to then I can see it becoming an issue but otherwise this is a simple application with foam roller. Creates a super smooth untextured finish. As a side note I would sand the wall smooth and clean first if that is what you are painting. Don't skip steps you won't have the finish product you are looking for.

Just like so many others have said, it is so thin and watery that it is impossible to apply without streaks and poorly covered areas. Plus the color it so much lighter than on the can. After just a few minutes of painting it on a wall in my office, I could see it was going to be a bust and I stopped wasting my time. Hey Rustoleum, how about arranging a Home Depot credit for me and take this off the market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy extra paint and plan on lots of coats Went with a dark blue, which eventually came out really nice!I did about 6 coats on the wall before achieving a rich even look. Glad I didn't do an entire wall, it would have taken me all day. It doesn't go on as seamless as regular paint and looks very uneven until you get enough coats on the wall. Over all it was worth the time and effort

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love This Stuff I got a gender neutral color (deep teal) to do various projects. It went on really easily and the color is beautiful. I recommend you put it on with a sponge roller instead of a brush. When it dries if there are bumps it makes it hard to write on with chalk. The directions say you need 2 or 3 coats, but I definitely needed 3 coats. I painted it onto metal and it worked wonderfully. I'm currently searching for more projects to use this with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful color I got this chalkboard paint in the Chocolate Brown, rather than black, for my son's room to use on one wall. I love the color! It matches his room, better than black, and same effect for chalking. You have to wait 4 hours to apply the second coat, but you will need to! First coat is thin and sketchy. Easy to apply though. You will most likely need 3 coats. So, for one wall, plan on getting 3 of these 29 0z. cans. It's worth it! So different, that it was much more pleasurable painting ..knowing u can write on it later! Easy to clean up! I only wish I could get by with one coat, like the paint n primer in one. Or, that they made this in a GALLON size! By the way, you don't need any primer before painting chalkboard paint:) It grabs any surface well:)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used with their Magnetic Primer I used Raspberry over their gray Magnetic Primer on a huge wall in my basement. Raspberry was not as bright because of dark primer, but both products work well. This was easy to do and my kids love it!! I have a functional accent wall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Blue Color on can is off from actual color I got the banner blue, which looked like a darker navy blue per the can. It turned out like a royal blue that was not the color I was going for. I took it back to Home Depot and picked, a color from their color swatches and the gentleman at the paint counter mixed in a darker blue color and it was perfect. Great customer service at Home Depot. 3 coats with a roller and perfect.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed I followed the directions that were on the label, but still got a very uneven finish. I stirred the paint before applying to ensure that it was consistent (to avoid blotches) and used a high quality foam roller. The paint came out bright blue when it Banner Blue was supposed to be more of a navy. I used up the entire can of paint and it was still uneven. I let a day in between coats thinking that I was lifting the paint. It took me more than a week to paint this part of my office. If I had known this, I would have just gotten black paint to make my life easier.
