Customer Questions & Answers

What is the difference between this form and the automotive form of rust remover?

The automotive form appears identical but costs a few cents more. #248658
Asked by: ReviewerInMD
Not being familiar enough with other rust removing product s referenced ( I have used professional to prep and restore / bondo ) I can only say that as I prepared the surface and applied this product it formed a relevantly tight barrier between the floor board and the mats that a quick test deemed watertight and one good coat accomplished this. I will come back to this after service interval of six months and update with pic and repeat test result.

The product info on this site says it dries in as little as 15 minutes, on the directions on the can it says allow to dry for 24 hours. Which is it?
Asked by: handygirl
The video says to spray the top coat within one hour or wait 48 hours to do it.

Do I need to sand after I apply if it bubbles up and/or to get ride of rust?
Asked by: Louis
As long as the rust is covered, Louis, it'll be just fine. Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer is designed to be applied over rusty surfaces. If you wanted to smooth out the surface, you certainly could by sanding. Keep in mind that if you do decide to sand, that you'll want to allow the product to sit for 24 hrs before recoating to avoid wrinkling.

Use on a rusty baseboard heater?

Baseboard heater in the bathroom is very rusty. Can I spray this on, and paint over? With light-colored paint?
Asked by: schmicknick
Haven't had good luck preventing rust coming through with this product. Recommend you use the paint-on rustoleum rust converter. Also be careful about max operating temperatures - the rust converters have a 200F max temperature. Shouldn't be a problem if this is a water-heating system baseboard, as they typically run at 150-160F, but just in case you are running the heating loop at higher temps.

This Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer is available in a can with a rusty patio chair pictured on the label and a similar one with a red circle on the can. Buy the one with the chair on the label!!! It costs less and has the cheaper spray nozzle. The other can has the nicer larger nozzle which clogs and spritzes and leaves 1/3 of the product unusable in the can (with this product.) The product itself is amazing on surface rust as it chemically changes it to carbon. I use this product regularly while restoring classic cars. It will not work on deep seated rust, for that you need Naval Jelly.

Years ago, I used a brush-on version of a product similar to this, and it worked quite well. It brushed on white, and turned black as it did its work on the rust, becoming a black coating ONLY where it interacted chemically with the rusty areas. I am not impressed with the RustOleum spray-on version. It did cover the rusty areas that I had cleaned and wire-brushed, but it was like spraying on a translucent black paint. Within a day or two, much of the area that I had sprayed had bubbled up, including some of the adjacent painted areas. This meant I had to wire brush the areas again, to remove the bubbling and peeling surface. It looks like RustOleum is trying to combine a paint with a rust-conversion product, and in the end, does neither very well. I would NOT recommend this product.

However, it stopped working right in the middle of spraying a middle fence, and I've been debating about whether to try to return it because there's a substantial amount left in the can, but probably less than the "extra 25%. Whether the paint itself works as expected is a question that can't be answered for months, but just writing this out makes me realize that I shouldn't just eat what's left (so to speak).

In our application we removed car, mats and soundproofing to discover massive amounts of existing rust. After using a shop vac top get up the clutter we used this product for cosmetic and rust prevention . Came across as very professional and applied easily. So impressed I used it again in the engine compartment. Met every expectation and dried within minutes in a rather humid environment.

I have been using it for more than ten years on everything from yard ornaments to steam locomotive restoration. put one heavy coat of this on anything that can rust, you do not even have to remove surface rust. unless you scrape or grind this stuff off IT WILL NOT RUST AGAIN...Not even my steel boat trailer that has been in salt water a dozen times.

I have a two wheel trailer that had been sitting neglected for about 5 years. I took the wheels off used a wire brush on the worst spots and sprayed them down with the rust reformer. Last week I used the trailer to bring home a 6x6 fence section I had ordered.

This stuff worked great on my metal outdoor planters, I went over them with a scotch brite pad, wiped them off and painted them, it dries quickly in flat black. This product covered and sealed all of the rusty areas and left a nice primer coat. I sprayed the 2X paint after and everything looks great.
