Hello,
The Rustoleum Crystal Cote when applied to old signs that you are referring to, when they are already faded badly, will not bring back the color. The color(s) have faded and bleached by the intense sun ray's.
While it will slow the fading and help make the signs look better for awhile, Crystal Cote, like I said, will not make the signs look better, but will make them look nicer. If these are vintage old signs wanted by collectors, do not use this or any sealing product on the signs. It will destroy any long lasting antique selling advantages. But if they will be kept by you, then Rustoleum Crystal Cote, will help the appearance. Put the Crystal Cote on in a few layers and be sure it has a wet look. Be sure also that the signs are lying face up and flat. All the Home Depot's carry Rustoleum Crystal Cote in their stores at a decent price. Have fun and good luck with your project(s).

Answer:
Yes this Rustoleum Crystal Clear Cote is absolutely waterproof.
It adds a brilliant clear high gloss shine and is perfect for metals, some plastics, and tiles.
Best to read the Rustoleum instructions on what you may be using it on. Some items this will be bad for while the majority are great. But as far as waterproof coating of this product? Perfect!!

It is not completely waterproof. I used it on a birdbath and water eventually got through on surfaces that were constantly underwater. Other surfaces were fine.

I'm considering using an indoor coffee table outdoors. The table frame is made of steel and has a gold colored coating. Would this be a good product to use to protect the frame and prevent rust? Or will it not go over the gold coating well?

Absolutely Emily! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Crystal Clear Enamel is a great clear coat for bare or previously painted metal surfaces. We do recommend a light scuff sanding of the surface you intend to paint for best adhesion. Clean well with soap and water and allow to dry completely before spraying.

Hello Emily,
I have been asked by Home Depot to try and answer your questions involved with your project. I am a retired professional and will do my best to help you out.
Rustoleum (R.O.) Clear Cote works on most anything, but, it does have a few limitations.
You mention metal framing that is gold, that might be a brass spray paint put on by someone in the past or the Mfr. Some of them call it gold paint, but it is a brass base component paint. If that is what is on that metal frame, then this is what you want to do.
It will be a little work, you will have to be careful. If the glass top can be removed safely by you or better yet, have a friend help you for safety sakes. Lift it out and put it away in a safe place so it will not break. Lift it out with leather gloves in case it does break, you will stand a better chance of not cutting yourself or your friend due to the density of the hide. Do not use cotton gloves, they are slick on glass.
Now you will have to do sanding on the gold paint. Especially if there are any areas now that are starting to rust. All rust has to be removed. Get yourself a packet of sandpaper at your local Home Depot that has some 3-5 different grades of sand paper in one packet. You will want to start with 220 Grit Grade. The grit will be printed on the back side of the sandpaper. Once the metal is sanded well, to remove the scratch marks visible to the human eyes from the 220, now use 400 or 500 Grit sandpaper and sand everything down again. Next using a clean rag or clean old dish cloth, pour a fair amount of paint thinner on the rag (available at Home Depot in various sizes) . Wipe the metal down with that.
Then right behind that, use a clean 'dry' rag. Wipe the excess off. Let air dry for 10 mins at least.
While that is drying, you can put a good sized piece of plastic covering from Home Depot once again, down on the area that you can paint it. Set the frame on top of the plastic and if you have 4 or 5 chunks of wood that you can place under the frame to keep it up off of the plastic or ground. (Don't do this on a windy day, just be sure it is well ventilated where you do this) If you want to change the color of the frame, you may do so now, but, it is best to use R.O. spray paint available in many colors at Home Depot, as when you coat that with Clear Cote, it will not shrink or bubble on you as it may with some off brand of cheap spray paints. The thing is with R.O. paint, is that it mostly will take about 24 hrs. for it to dry completely but should dry to the touch in 4-6 hours. It is best to let the R.O. paint (if you change the color) set for an hour then, spray on several nice light coats of Clear Cote, letting each layer dry for at least 30 mins. Do not apply it in heavy layers. Trust me, as you will run into a mess if you do.
Do not be in a rush. For making it outdoor available, I would apply approximately 6 light coats of R.O. Clear Cote. When it is to the point after 6 or more coats that you like what you see? Quit! It is done, so let it dry and cure itself for 24 hours. Next day you can place the table frame where you like, clean the glass with a good window cleaner on both sides, then place it back into the frame and enjoy your work. Your guests will marvel at your handy work. Good luck and have fun with your project.

Hello Edward,
I am an end user of this product and use it in and on many applications. Some for testing also.
The R.O. Clear Cote product has some short falls but over all it is a quality product as long as you follow the manufacturers recommendations for its use.
As far as the use, if you are referring to glass headlights or the plastic covered ones with halogen style bulbs?
I would not use it on glass bulbs, especially halogen as it may bubble on you after headlight is used a few times. The you would have to strip the finish off with a good grade stripper.
This product will slow down yellowing of plastic over headlights, but not stop it as the yellowing occurs the vast majority of the time from within the plastic cover that protects the actual bulb. All plastic covers after a few short years will start leaking from washing or rain, letting moisture into the lens.
It is not the sunlight that does all the yellowing to the plastic covers, it is the bulb with its high intensity light that causes a great portion of it, some by trapped moisture inside and almost the rest of it is caused by the materials that are used. The sun plays a small percentage of the problem of yellowing. So this product will not take any yellowing away, however if you have new plastic covers and want to help protect them, then yes. But I would apply it before the installation of the lens. That way you have better control and do not have to worry about overspray, unless you tape and paper it off where it needs to be covered to prevent overspray if not removing the lens.
Everything that you need for your project can be had at any Home Depot Store.
Good luck too you in your project.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Water blotch issues! Used this over black Rust-Oleum flat oil finish on wrought iron. Looked great until water from our sprinkler system dried, leaving large white blotches on the horizontal railings. Called Rust-Oleum. They were able to come up for a reason for this and offered to send me a refund. They did take the batch numbers from the product. I'm in the process of trying to rectify the problem. First tried roughing up the finish with scouring pads and repainting with oil gloss. This only gave the same result the next time water dried on it. I'm going to a kerosene rub down and oil gloss a second time. Have had good results with that product and hope to persevere with it. The flat, with or w/o the spray gloss, does not work!
