Customer Questions & Answers

The motor sparks when starting and clatters when stopping. Is that normal?

Asked by: Woody
No, that is not normal. My drill press is almost whisper quiet when it runs.

please clarify amperage!

the reviews differ on amperage and how many speeds it has. The previous question asking for clarification received two opposite responses, with no explanation about how to check. Are we talking about two different drill presses here or what?
Asked by: mnashp
Hi Mnashp. The specifications for this unit are: Input-120 Volt, 60Hz, AC Only, and 3 Amps. Hope this helps!

How do I increase the speed of the motor?

Asked by: Jerry
You don't actually increase the speed of the motor. To change the speed of the chuck, you change the gear ratio of the drive system by moving the drive belt up or down on the sheaves of the pulleys located under the top belt cover.

10 in. Drill Press with Laser is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 105.

I fully understand you get what you pay for and I paid for a low end drill press. What I did not think I was getting was something this bad. The belt drive will not handle much resistance limiting the size of the bit, speed of drilling, and material drilled through. The limitations here are enough to encourage you to save a little more and get a better drill press. I use mine a fair amount, only for small things but have become frustrated with its inability to drive a Forstner bit of any size. On the plus side it is easy to get to know and fix although I worry about major issues and acquiring the replacement parts if needed.

Have a project to finish and it has died. Granted it was not very expensive, but I would have expected it to be able to drill several holes with a Forstner bit. Now I need to find a replacement and I am not buying this type of drill press if these are the results.

First off, I gave this unit 4 stars because if you're like me, I disregard most 5 star and 1 star ratings because they are either fake, or more advertising than anything. This is the first drill press I have ever owned. I use it for hobbies, nothing more. I mainly use aged white oak which is a hard wood and with this press on its lowest setting it worked fine. It can drill all the way through the one to one and half inches of the wood with ease. The directions for this drill press were a little confusing, but it was nothing that a combination youtube video couldn't explain. Most people have issues that the chuck isn't already pressed on this unit. All it took was a piece of scrap wood and a rubber mallet and I have had 0 issues. It is Ryobi, so the overall construction is light and a lot of it is plastic so you have to be careful when unboxing and assembly. The unit is also only as good as the bits you use in it. Don't skimp in this area. Just like all Ryobi products, if it comes with a bit, or attachment, you're better off going with another brand. I bought the Ryobi Forsner Bits for this and they work great as long as I keep them sharp. For a first time owner, I am extremely happy with this unit and I am glad I didn't go with a unit that costs two to three times as much.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from bad chuck My Chuck started slipping soon after I started using a 3/4 inch forester bit to drill out some mortise holes that finished off with a chisel. It seems like a well designed machine other than the Chuck is pressed in,by driving it in with a hammer, and needs to have a way to tighten down. It doesn't have an alien set screw inside the Chuck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly Made I had an older Ryobi drill press that worked great for several years (it was when their color was blue). When I needed to replace it, I just went with another Ryobi. But the quality level of Ryobi's drill presses has dropped dramatically. This new drill press is shaky, made with thinner materials overall, and it's harder to adjust. Within the first few plunges, the plastic depth stop snapped. Upon inspection, I noticed many other vulnerable plastic parts that used to be metal on the old drill press. This went back to the store, and my search for a new drill press is still on. It's too bad, because I really want to be able to purchase Ryobi tools.
