Answer:
For 16" mower, my best GUESS is that 18V(4Ah) is slightly less powerful than 40V(4Ah). Otherwise, same weight, same blade, same dimensions.
Ryobi 20" mower (with brushless motor) ONLY comes with 40V (5Ah!) battery. [Ah is sort-of how long battery will last]
I got 18V because I didn't want to be tempted to try brush-hogging. And the new, bigger 18V's rounded out my collection of Ryobi batteries better

All things considered, this was just right for my little lawn but if I had a larger suburban lawn I'd go bigger. Read Less

Answer:
They are basically the same mower. They are just set up to operate on different voltages. I have the 18 and my brother in law the 40. I couldn't tell any difference in the operation of the 2.

Answer:
There is no side discharge. The discharge is at the back because of the rear grass catcher bag. Or, you can leave the bag off and put in the plug that blocks the rear discharge, and the mower mulches. I use mine this way (mulch). It does a pretty good job and is easier, by far, than emptying a bag.

16 in. One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery Push Mower with 2 Batteries is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 151.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mowing with the future Great little mower for my lawn. Pros: -reusable battery packs for other ONE+ devices -Long battery life - well built - simple to use - light weight -no need to fill with gas or oil Cons - there's a power indicator on the logic board, next to the batteries, which I think is useless

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trimming Solution and Portable Problem: Large yard mowing with many objects to mow around including fence posts and under rails. Solution: Tractor mow the large areas. Then use a lightweight mower for 45 minute or less trim. Problem: Self propel mowers (have two) are great for forward motion trim but constantly needs drug back repetitiously with much fatigue. Solution: Light weight small mower. Problem: Trunking a heavy gas mower to mow a small grass area at the church. Solution: Light weight, easily lifted and foldable mower with no gas smells and the trunk eaily closes. Owning many Ryobi 18V tools. This common sense approach to my problems were solved with this two battery mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ryobi ONE+ 18-Volt 16" Cordless Lawn Mower Sufficient power to cut my small 1100 sft lawn with plenty of remaining charge in the two P108 batteries (shows 3 bars on both batteries). I let my grass grow a bit longer than normal and it still had no difficulty. It seems to mulch okay but when using the bag I experienced some leakage of the trimmings, a bit more than my old plug-in mower, but tolerable. It's easy to fold the handle for fast compact storage. Quick and easy height adjustment. Lightweight so it can be folded up and lifted without too much effort, yet it's heavy enough to remain stable while cutting. With the same batteries I can also edge the lawn and blow off the sidewalk (I have a Ryobi 18v line trim-edger and blower) with no additional charging.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mower, but not for everyone. This mower is very user friendly and very easy to assemble out of the box. Comes mostly assembled, you only need to attach upper part of mower with included hardware, no tools required. Mower is fairly light in weight, about 40 pounds. Two batteries are included with mower, but it can run on only one. Batteries are also interchangeable if you have other Ryobi tools. Very quiet mower, it almost sounds like an electric trimmer. Will get some getting used to for the people used to gas mowers.Power is good enough, but only a 16" cut. Perfect for smaller yards, probably no more than a 4000-5000 square foot lot. Has battery meter so you know how much juice you have left.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great battery operated mower! Runs for 30 minutes on the two batteries included. These are Ryobi's best 18V+ batteries. It also comes with their best 18V+ charger. It is lightweight, and can be lifted into the shed with one hand. We have a riding mower, but a lot of places are hard to reach with it. Use this to finish up all those places in about 20 minutes. Cuts subsequent weed whacking from 90 minutes to 20 minutes. Almost one hour and a lot of work saved on each mowing! Also good for touching up those spots that that seem to grow a lot faster than most of the rest of the yard. AND NO YANKING ON A CRANKING CORD LIKE OUR OLD GAS PUSH MOWER!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet, powerful enough for fifth of an acre subdivision lot's lawn Very nice mower, used yesterday to mow my front and back lawns on my standard subdivision lot (1/5 of an acre) without having to recharge batteries. One handle adjusts the blade height, a nice feature. No ear protection or gasoline required which is nice. This mower is narrower than most gasoline mowers so requires more passes, but I enjoy the exercise of yard work anyway. Preparation required charging both batteries one at a time using the included recharger. Assembly was simple: attach the handle with 2 bolts, remove the mulching plug - assuming you want the bag to catch clippings and leaves. Then place the batteries in the mower, attach the bag, insert the key, and start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Excellent product right out of the box.... Minor assembly of the handle and your good to go. The height adjustment is an absolute plus for the lawnmower, one simple adjustment and the entire mower moves up or down for cut height of your lawn. Very lightweight easy to transport with the fast fold-up of the handle. Easy to maneuver through the yard being so lightweight. Blade cuts clean and no skips in cutting path. Well balanced overall even as the grass catcher fills the mower cuts evenly and the front of the mower stays down. Run time. I am averaging roughly 50 minutes now, this is the sixth time of use. Initial use was around 35 minutes due to me starting and stopping the mower so many times to move items on the lawn. THIS really reduces run time. Each stop turns on the electric brake to the blade and each start requires heavier current draw. Tip: Once you start the mower, keep it running and don't stop / start the mower. This will improve run time and enhance battery life. Move things off the lawns prior to cutting. The only negative on the mower is the discharge door for the catcher... I see trouble ahead when using in very cold temps, too lightweight and flimsy. Gut feeling it may break in the cooler months if you let slam shut, yet to be seen. One thing that is really needed with this "kit" is a dual port charger. The mower will run on one battery but not nearly as well and only for a short time. If you already have other 18v one+ items you will most likely have another charger and this won't be an issue but if not, this is a disappointment to the buyer. I would rate it at 9 out of 10 for my needs, typical tract home with basic front and rear lawns. I can cut both front and rear lawns and still have two bars remaining on both batteries providing I cut the lawns once a week. The longer the grass the less run time you will have.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Mower for Small Yards This mower does a good job cutting and is light and easy to maneuver. However, it only cuts a 16" swath and requires 8 battery set changes to do our yard (~1/2 acre). Further, our mower created so much heat in the batteries that the plastic around the terminals melted! If you have a very small flat yard, and don't have dense grass, this mower is the ticket. If your yard is bigger and denser - you might be happier with the 40V version, as I am.
