Why does this brushless cordless make a high pitch whine during use? Is this normal?

Why does this brushless cordless make a high pitch whine during use? Is this normal?
Asked by: Bert
Yes, Its caused by fast switching MOSFET's distributing power to the motors windings. Its very normal and characteristic of some brushless motors.

I've been using Ryobi for about 10yr, origionally I bought Ryobi for around the house stuff, then started bringing them to work because company tools suck. I use and abuse these tools all day long. All the guys laugh and snicker at my Ryobi's stuff, doesn't bother me, I get the last laugh when they spend twice as much for the tool and batteries, honestly, the performance and durability difference between Ryobi and the yellow, red, and blue brands is minimal, I know because I've used them all extensively (at least the brushed versions). Kind of related so bear with me, I've been into high performance electric RC aircraft for a long time, brushless DC motors and lithium batteries revolutionized the hobby a 10+yrs ago, way before the tool makers even thought of using them. The power density and efficiency of brushless motors is unbelieveable, they actually match or exceed nitro or two stroke gas motors. From the hobby I know all about the power and advantages that brushless motors bring, I actually wind the coils on my RC motors for extreme performance. Not having brushes to replace or the extra friction the induce is hardly the biggest advantage of a brushless motor, the real advantage is that the motor is externally commutated (power distributed to the windings in a controlled fashion). The motor current and position is monitored, and controlled by a microprocessor. The processor sends signals to MOSFETs which are basically really fast switches, BTW this fast switching is what makes that whining noise. The MOSFET's then distribute power straight from the battery to the motor by controlling switching speed and the duty cycle of each individual pulse of power, the motor gets exactly what it needs to maintain speed and torque at any given moment. This creates less waste(heat) making the motor much more efficient, it also delivers constant torque which is very noticeable. As you can tell I was excited when I saw a Ryobi brushless drill on the shelf, even though I didn't need it I snatched it up. I wanted to test it when I got home sowithout charging the battery I put a 16"x 7/8" ship auger drill bit in the surprisingly good metal chuck and did sort of a torture test , I was amazed when I was able to bottom out the bit 16" deep without a hiccup while drilling into the end of a oak log in my yard! I repeated it five times and the drill and battery was only slightly warm but the bit was blazing hot and had steam coming off it! I know for a fact my old brushed Ryobi's or any other brands brushed equivalent would have either stalled or started smoking on the first try, trust me I've tried it before. Just buy it if you're in the market for one. You wont regret it, just the battery and charger are almost worth it.

My first project using this tool was building a 36in.L x 36in.H x 12in.D shelf and a 95in.L x 15in.D shelf mounting on a concrete wall. The materials used was 2in. x 2in Furring Strip Board and 15/32in Sanded Plywood with #8 2-1/2in and 1-1/4in exterior screws. One full charge lasted for the project and power band was consistent from full charge down to two bars on battery charge indicator. Drilling concrete for #10 and #8 anchor screws was not a problem; impressed with performance! Some mentioned the odd noise from the brushless technology; don't bother me knowing this is normal. This is my first brushless drill, so I paid the extra money over the standard unit for the performance and torque.

I purchased to outfit my new garage with shelves, pegboard, and general storage. The 18V Ryobi Hammer Drill was a pleasure to use. My only complaint is the lack of a depth stop. I would frequently hit the chuck against the block chipping out the top of the hole. The anchors still held fine, but it something that could be easily fixed in future revisions. The included 4ah battery is great. I've yet to see it drop below 3 bars of charge. It makes the combo a real bargain. The belt hook works great.

Some people say it's too much, but you're getting Ryobi's best charger, battery, and drill. I drilled a 1" spaid bit hole through a piece of oak trim in about 5 seconds. Very comfortable in my hand, and I gotta say Ryobi went all out on this on. I would buy this again any day.

Like almost every Ryobi 18v product that I have purchased, it is top notch. Plenty of power. The thing to remember is that you are not just buying a drill you are buying into a system. That being said, it's a quality system. My original Ryobi drill still works even though I use it for a couple hours a day for 3 yeas now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally Ryobi Brushless Is Here I was so glad to see Ryobi getting into brushless tools. We all know the advantage of longer running time making our batteries last longer letting us get more of our tools. But also getting more performance out of our tools from the Ryobi designers. I own the two previous models of the hammer drills the P213 with 330 in lbs of torque and the P214 with it's 600 in lbs of torque and now the P251 with it's 750 in lbs of torque and man what a difference this new brushless drill has over the previous models. While I will still be using my older models for certain jobs my new go to drill will be this p251. This drill is awesome and power needed to tackle those tough drilling or driving jobs. I keep the side handle on my drill all the time due to the torque this thing has so I'm not supprised by a sudden twisting of the drill if I'm drilling and hit a knot. While the drill bit goes through to it can give quite a jerk. Others have commented on the high pitch sound of the drill in confined spaces it does not bother my ears. Ryobi has put this P1813 kit together with there best battery P108 and there great 30 min P117 charger and the P251 drill at a bargain price of $ 149.00 man you can't beat this deal it's like getting the drill for $40.00 over the price of the battery and charger if purchased separately. But then again Ryobi always puts there kit prices where we the consumers benefit the most. But now with there brushless introduction they are offering there best of battery and charger. I'm very pleased with the performance of there newest model and if you have a use for the latest and greatest you owe it to yourself to get this drill combo kit P1813. I see now Ryobi has out the brushless belt sander and soon a brushless drill driver. That's what is so great of being part of the Ryobi family they are always bringing out products that we tool freaks are waiting to get our hands on and put to good use for all our DYI / honey due projects around the house. As I've said before in other reviews thanks Ryobi for all the inventive products you offer us at an effortable prices. Cant wait to see what the designers in the future will be offering us.

I have wanted a hammer drill for a long time! and now that it came out as brushless i had to have it! You can not beat the fact that for the price it comes with a charger and a battery!!!! the additional removable handle is great, now you can get that right push without having to get all your weight behind it! the Switcher on the top is easy to use, really simple but great. The speed adjustment is also really easy to switch and easy to use. and you want to talk about power where you need it.. >>>BOOOOM<<< this is for you. I can drive / drill / screw just about anything i could throw at this thing...no issues!!!

I am sorry for his experience because Mine has not been the same. I use it moderately, mostly for drilling anchors in concrete and it has held up great. I am glad for the handle attachment, with it, and the force I can put behind it, the tool has always had the power I need.
