Rated 2 out of 5 by Leaks like a sieve I wish I would have returned it. Leaked chain oil almost from the start. Messes up my garage and car if I forget to put something under it. Harder to start than any other chainsaw I ever owned. October 5, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ryobi 18 inch- great chainsaw Picked it up about 1 year ago, this chainsaw is really great all around and a good value for the price. Glad i got the 18 inch- would recommend you do as well. it starts every time and has a lot of power- cuts through like butter and really easy to reset if you get the chain pinched- just a simple loosening of the side screws and the chain length resets easily and then you tighten and its ready to go again. You may see some reviews where people say it won't start but it does so long as you follow the directions exactly- it needs the exact priming in the way the directions tell you and it will start easily every time. Glad i bought it would recommend it to anyone. February 22, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great value Bought this saw 3 months ago to replace a 42cc Stihl that died. So far it has worked well. Although it has a slightly bigger engine than my Stihl, it doesn't have quite as much power, which isn't a big surprise since it was much less expensive. It still seems to be plenty capable for the typical home or cottage owner although I haven't run it all that hard. It handles logs up to about 18" fairly easily. Cutting anything bigger than that takes some effort. I have no problem at all getting the saw to start. I just follow the directions and it starts first or second pull every time, even in cold weather. The power to weight ratio isn't spectacular, but for the price this seems to be a decent saw. Rated 4 out of 5 by Great saw for the money. Some of these Negative reviewers don't know how to use machinery. I read all of these negative reviews and it is laughable. One guy burns up the cylinder on multiple saws and then complains about it being junk. Most likely the guy wasn't using enough 2 cycle mix and was, in fact, the cause of the problem. Others have complained about the saw being hard to start. Learn how to start a saw. I have used this saw to cut everything under the sun. It is a little underpowered, but with patience it cuts everything. Oak, Hickory, dried dead pine, etc...It doesn't track through the wood and the motor is steady. It could use a little adjustment of the hi jet, but came set close enough. Literally, this saw has fired up on first or second pull EVERY SINGLE TIME I have started it. Don't flood it with the choke pulled out and you're good. Prime the bulb, pull the choke lever out, pull the cord until it hiccups, push choke in, pull the cord again and voila. It fires right up. EVERY time. There are some basics about using any saw, especially important when using a cheaper saw. Clean fuel. Proper mix. 50:1 Bar Oil Clean the saw routinely. Fuel stabilizer or ethanol treatment if you use ethanol blended gas. Listen to the motor. Adjust idles as necessary. Over time things must be adjusted. Sharp chain. Don't flood it. If you flood the saw, you may as well just walk away and try again later. Don't buy a 150 dollar saw and expect a 500 dollar performance. Expensive saws cost more for a reason. That being said, if you don't need an arborist's saw and you aren't cutting trees every day, this is a GREAT saw for the money. The only downside to cheaper saws, is that they require diligent maintenance. With more plastic components, more could break and you should give your saw a thorough checkup and cleaning after each use. Proper maintenance, using good fuel, and understanding what you are doing is important. Don't let the naysayers drive you away. This saw is good for the money. The return policy with HD is so easy it shouldn't be a problem if you do get a defective unit. It also comes with a 3 yr limited warranty which Ryobi is very good about honoring. If you want a $500 saw, go buy one. If you want a decent saw, for a good price, for occassional use and in case of emergency tree fall... This is your saw. Just make sure you educate yourself on how to use it and don't be like these other folks and blame a tool when the real problem is operator error. October 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Easy to start, smooth cut and blade holds a edge I purchased this saw June 30 2012, right after a wind storm of 75mph, in which it ripped through my front and back yard. Trees were laying down all over the place, large and medium size. I've been cutting all weekend 8 hours a day, all the debri is cut up, I've got a lot of firewood. This chain saw performed great after priming, started right up...first pull and every time after that. This is a smooth operating saw, very durable July 1, 2012
