Does this sander only use velcro type pads, or can I use the stick on type?

Asked by: DScott
Looks to be only Velcro unless there is some adapter you can purchase?

Faulty Sander - Warranty / Return Info

Like many of the 1 star reviews will tell you, this sander is prone to defects. After less than 1 hr of use, the sanding head started spinning out of control when turned on. You can't even hold the sander as it is too hard to control and powerful. It is useless. Unfortunately, it's been past the 90 day Home Depot Warranty. I've submitted a ticket at Ryobi Customer Support, but haven't heard a response. How do I get a refund or exchange from Ryobi?
Asked by: Ally
I think you are out of luck. I have found Ryobi customer service is polite, but the is it. I would get the Rigid brand next time myself. They have a lifetime warranty on their motors. I bought this Ryobi for one project only because the air compressor hose wouldn't reach my project for my original sander.

I want to refinish my coffee table that got gouged and scratched when I moved recently. Is this the proper sander for that or is there a better choice

I have a mouse sander. But someone told me a belt type sander would be the best choice. But i hear conflicting opinions.
Asked by: Handygal
I think this sander would work well for your coffee table. There are a number of grits available so you can use a larger grit to remove the scratches and gouges and then a fine grit to finish it. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area with a mask on as it WILL kick up a lot of dust.

You certainly can Bill! You would remove the bag and connect it to a standard 1-1/4 in vacuum connection.

Bought it today and I am impressed, although it is the first orbital sander I have ever used. We stripped all the finish off of a solid pine coffee table using the 80 grit paper. Then used the 120 grit paper I bought, and finally 150 grit. It did a wonderful job and the table is ready for the staining process. What I also like are the pads are held by an integrated valcro system which surprisingly works well. I hope it lasts a long time since a few reviewers stated their's were malfunctioning after a period of time. For the price, I think its a good buy at 40 bucks. Also, it comes with one 80 grit, one 120 grit and one 220 grit sand paper to attach.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Value! Reliable, Low Vibe. I bought this sander to replace my failing Craftsman orbital. At first glance, they were both similar in shape and size. They both come from the same manufacturer. Since Ryobi offers a better warranty, its easier to find Home Depot stores, and the price was better, I went with the Ryobi 5in. orbital sander with the hook and loop system. It is low vibration, and extremely quiet in comparison. Owning a vibe sander and a belt sander as well, this is my jack of all trades sander and I use it for wood, metal, paint, walls, etc. Don't expect the dust catch to work miracles, but expect a reliable sander that's comfortable to use.

I removed fifty year-old wallpaper from a bathroom in my home and just could not get all the paste residue off the drywall. The Ryobi smoothed it out in no time at all, allowing for a pristine paint job to follow. The room looks better than it did new. I like the fact that the Ryobi is lightweight and easy to handle, is powerful enough to do the job, and does not complain about long or intense usage. I researched several brands before buying and could not find a better 5" unit for the price. Comes with everything you need to get started, and the price just cannot be beat. I own other Ryobi power tools and will always recommend them for versatility and dependability.

First time I bought this sander and used it on a small project and it was fine. The next time I used it the disc became loose and wobbled. I took it off and there is a screw under that, that had come loose. I tightened it and within a few minutes, it was loose again. Terrible sander. But that must have been a lemon. I received a new sander and it purrs like a kitten. Much less vibration and seems to be more efficient at sanding. I happy to be using it. I would buy this sander again and I am very pleased with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ryobi corded 5 in 2.6 amp orbital sander The price was awesome. It's fine if you don't use it much, but definitely not meant for a lot of use. I got about 1 year's casual use out of it. I use it a lot but am not a pro. It's my 2nd low-end orbital in two years ... so the message is it's low-end ... and I'm a slow learner. The screw holding the padbase to the shaft kept coming loose. I finally epoxied it ... but by then I had it on and off so many times I had stripped out one of the (4) torx screws that hold the pad to the base. Time to pay more for a better one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not purchase On May 19 tried to return to tilly mill store. Lots of vibration suddenly started after 2 months of light use. Reviews show that you must take pad off and tighter one screw. After doing this I decided that I did not want this sander. The Ryobi rep refused to take return while recognizing that my complaint was valid. I have Ryobi planer, 2 drills, 3 bit sets, 2 disc sanders, 1 belt sander, router bit set and table saw(died recently). No more. You have a problem with a product and will do nothing about it and you must read customer reviews to discover it. I gave the product to Home Depot.

I needed a orbital sander for a project, but at the time of purchase didn't think I would use it outside of the one project. Was I wrong I have been sanding up a storm. I like this sander, I just worry about it burning out since it was the cheapest one on the shelf. I am crossing my fingers it will make it through 3 more projects.
