Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by msb3 RYOBI 1/4 Sheet Pad Sander
After doing some light sanding with the sandpaper provided with the sander, and then with some sandpaper I found at home, I was quite unhappy with my purchase. I found it very difficult to affix the sandpaper to the sander using the clips, and the sandpaper lasted only a couple minutes, since it would tear at the ends. I then bought some 1/4 sheets of higher quality Diablo sandpaper with adhesive backing. Now, it works exceptionally well. The better sandpaper is longer lasting and does not rip or tear; the sander now does a great job. I suspect this is why the round version of this Ryobi sander with hoop and loop sandpaper attachment has received far superior reviews.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 Major disappointment
Debated buying this or a 'mouse sander'. Bought this one and within 15 minutes I'm thinking I will see if they will take it back. Clips don't feel like they'll last long. Sandpaper supplied ripped apart very quickly.
My guess is that it might be ok for a little bit of small hobby work but anything bigger don't waster your time and money.
Very disappointing for a Ryobi which I usually find to be moderate quality.

I had it for 2 years and was using it ocasionally, light duty I would say. Then a spring clamp broke (a wire which holds sandpaper in place).
Funny thing is that it is not possible to find this part (cost $1.61) in Canada. I tried to order part on RYOBI web site, it redirected me to some US parts provider and they put me on a waiting list for the part. After 2 months they told me that part is in stock but shipment is going to cost me $34 USD. So I had to cancel order and buy another sander.
So the bottom part is that RYOBI sander is a good device, I was pretty happy with it when it worked but if something (even smallest and cheapest part) is broken then don't waste time trying to fix it. Next time I would buy some decent Makita or Bosch or other good name sander it will save me money and time on the long run.

This sander not only worked great it worked fast. I went to Tennessee to meet my mother and father in law and found they needed some work done on their porch. It was 95 degrees and 100% humidity, who has 100% humidity - this sander made it very easy to get the job done - the in laws are very happy with the work I did, thank you for helping me earn brownie points with the in laws. Me and my new Ryobi Sander built the railing around the porch and the hand rails for the steps. Now my Mother in Law can go out the front door safely, where before she would not use the porch cause she didn't feel safe.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Crafty Nice while it lasted!
I've had this sander for a few years but only logged about 6 hrs use until today--and it broke! I didn't have a problem with the handle or pad like other folks, it simple started to decompose as I used it! First a crack noise, then bits of plastic came shooting out the sides, then it jammed with shards of plastic sticking out from under the pad. Sure, it is inexpensive, but at $5/hr I'm disappointed:(. Otherwise, I loved the feel of it, light weight, fits in your hand nicely, not too loud etc...wish it lasted longer.

If I had read the reviews before purchasing this sander, I would not have purchased it. I ended up returning it after only using it once. The main problem I had was with the pad. Supposedly you can use the adhesive backed sandpaper with this machine, but if you do use it you can't get it off the pad. The instructions say the sandpaper has to be removed right after using the sander while the paper is still warm, but warm or cold I could not get all of the sandpaper off. In fact, the paper sticks to the pad so strongly that I ended up ripping off chunks of the pad in the process. This sander might be okay if I had used clamp on sandpaper, but once adhesive backed paper is used the pad is trashed and you can't use it again. The other problem I had with this sander was the dust bag. It literally did not work at all. When I finished sanding there was more dust on the piece of furniture I was sanding than in the dust bag. It simply does not work.

My husband and I are very disappointed with this product. We have it for less than 10 months and it already "fried". We took it back to Home Depot today and could not get a replacement. We had to leave the tool there for them to check what is wrong and were told it might take weeks. Yes, like everyone has tons of weeks of vacations to work in projects. What it should happen is that Home Depot and Ryobi would just replace it and then deal with fixing/re-selling as re-furbished. I gave two stars because 1) The price is good (but I guess you get what you paid for); 2) It did perform well while was working.
Buy at your own risk.
