The chainsaw started with no problems, ran well with no additional adjustments, and made short work of a large diameter tree which landed on my garage roof during a windstorm. For my occasional use, this saw does the job and the price was right. Given the need, I would do it again.

I would strongly recommend you avoid this saw. I've had two go bad, one out of the box. Here's the story. My wife actually bought the first one. She didn't tell me about it, but she thought we needed to have one around for hurricane season, so she bought it and stashed it away. We had a small tree fall down and we needed to cut it up, so she brought it out. Cool, I thought, so proceeded to cut up the tree. Maybe two hours work. Near the end, it suddenly stopped and wouldn't start again. Took it to a repair place. They called back a few weeks later with it fixed - engine blew. But they had submitted it for a warranty claim and to Ryobi's credit, they were sending a new one. So I kept the new one and the dealer kept the repaired one. Fast forward four years - I don't really have need for a chainsaw. But we moved to a wooded lot and now I do. So with much trepidation I took the saw out of the box today. The repair place told me to run 40:1 rather than the recommended 50:1, said Ryobi had many similar problems on their saws. So I mixed and fueled up, added chain lube, and tried to start it up. Won't run. In fact, it doesn't seem to turn over when I pull the start cord. Feels like something mechanical inside, either the starter or engine. So I'm out of warranty and out of luck, even though this saw just came out of the box. What a total waste of money and time. Don't buy a Ryobi chainsaw, ever.

I have a 40cc model with a 18" bar. I have had it 10 years. Keep good gas and bar oil in it and it just goes. This weekend I had to fall 3 trees. The biggest was 24" in diameter. The chain smoked but the motor just ran. Considering it cost me $89, I am very pleased with it and had to share this.

The saw was difficult to start and on the first day of use, the chain came off and bent so that it would not go back on. I can't find a replacement chain at Home Depot.

I had this chain saw for about 5 years now and it keeps working each time I used it. I had to cut a big tree into pieces the first time I used it so I did not have to hire an expensive tree cutter. It may take a few pull after a long time of not using it but after that it is easy to start just make sure you put fresh gasoline. Overall I recovered the cost I paid for this unit $199 at the time for the first two summers by not hiring tree cutter. It is dependable.
