Answer:
You can get additional batteries online, which we received in less than a week. It really helps having a spare when you are trimming a large area.

I doubt that you can, since the charger is specifically for the lithium batteries.

Answer:
I'm no expert on this one; however, NiCd's and LiOn batteries have different voltages and different chemistries so I would be very surprised if the two would have the same connections on the tool. NiCd is very old technology now and you're much better off with the high current capabilities of lithium ion batteries. Your NiCd's would get killed!

Hey Kris.
I dont remember Ryobi making a Ni-Cad 24 volt battery. This unit will only house a Lithium Ion 24 volt battery.

Answer:
Depends on what you are cutting. I've used mine for over a year now and at time for over 1 1/2 hrs and still plenty of battery left. If cutting real thick grass I would guess about the same time give or take 30 min. or so. Battery charges right up very quickly. I have never thought I should have two batteries. Hope this helps.

Answer:
Hi Les9 -- The runtime on the battery all depends on the size of line you are using and how thick the material that you are cutting is. Please contact our customer service for additional information at 1-800-860-4050. Thanks for the question!

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 221 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Father's Day gift 4 years ago. No problems to date.. My family bought one of these 24v trimmers in a Home Depot store, on sale, as a gift for me for Father;s Day 4 years ago. Had a gas powered Homelite that was getting harder and harder to start and I was tired of breathing and tasting 2-cycle exhaust and my clothes smelling like it too. Several scary reviews back then mentioned problems with string feed, battery life, and screws coming loose, oh my, so I didn't expect the Ryobi to last long. Well I'm pleased to report there has not been a single problem with mine. The yard takes about 35 minutes to trim, once a week. Almost always, a single charge is enough. I decided to buy the 24v hedge trimmer also, no problems with that either, just keep the blades oiled. Both units came with a charger and one battery, and they are interchangeable. So if it does run out of charge there's always another battery ready to go. I always charge the battery when done using it, and alternate batteries every week. I don't store the trimmers with batteries in them, and only put a battery in when ready to use it..Also I try to remember to charge the batteries (any rechargeables really) maybe 1/month or so during winter when they're just sitting on the shelf. I almost never run the grass trimmer at full speed, its not necessary since it has a variable trigger, and also clean any grass from the vents around the motor when done trimming. I just trim grass not brush. Hint: when edging sidewalk, don't just run the wheel along the concrete and let the string dig a trench in the dirt like my oblivious neighbor does!. Lift a little so it just trims the grass. The trimmer is light and quieter than any trimmer any of my neighbors have. I think I've changed the string spool maybe 3 times in 4 years and its super easy. Nothing lasts forever so when it does stop working I'm definitely buying another one. October 20, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by so sick of gas operated, love this, just attach battery and go. I LIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA, DURING THE WINTER MONTHS I DO NOT HAVE TO DO YARD WORK BUT TWICE A MONTH. MY GAS POWER 2 STROKE EQUIPMENT WOULD GUM UP FROM SITTING IDLE, AND I WOULD HAVE TO CLEAN OUT THE CARBATRATORS AND GAS TANKS EVERY OTHER WEEK JUST TO GET THEM TO WORK. I HAVE 1/2 AN ACER, A LOT OF TREES, AND A LOT OF EDGING, I HAVE ALL THE ATACMENTS, WEED WACKER, POLE SAW AND EDGER. I JUST TOOK DOWN TWO BIG TREES THAT HAD TO GO WITH THE POLE SAW, YES THE BATTERY DID DIE, BUT, WHILE IT WAS CHARGEING I GOT A CHANCE TO REST AND CLEAN UP WHAT I CUT. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT. SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING, STILL TRYING TO RECOUPE FROM ALL THE WORK I DID IN THE YARD THIS WEEKEND, WOULD POST PIC'S IF I COULLD. March 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product is easy to use This edger is easy to use and has the great feature where you can change the angle the string cuts, either flat or sideways. It can easily be changed by pushing down the handle with your foot. It performed well, however, I do wish it would have lasted longer with the battery life. I could not complete all of the edging around my home and then had to wait an hour for a recharge. The only other issue was one time the automatic feed of the string did not work and I had to take it apart and re-thread it so it would work. May 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makes our 5 acres look like a well-maintained park When we started landscaping the area around our new home, which had been an alfalfa field, we faced a challenge in getting trees to grow, especially since we were using seedlings for the large area. I like this light weight tool that does a heavyweight job. Since our old-school gas trimmer is too heavy and unwieldy, we were pulling weeds and trying to hand mow between our trees to keep the grass trimmed with less-than-satisfactory results. Now, while my husband mows the grass, I trim around all of the little tree seedlings and rock wall perimeters with this great tool. We found that trimming around the tree seedlings allowed them to grow taller each season, and love the results. We get many compliments on how beautiful our yard is now, and we give credit to having everything trimmed and manicured. The only issue is the battery life--about 30-45 minutes--which necessitated the purchase of an additional battery. We are thinking about getting a third battery, which would help in getting everything trimmed at once, although I don't mind the enforced resting period while the two batteries re-charge. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better than most gas powered wackers/edgers This tool does the job quite nicely. Quiet when in use and light. Easy to switch from wacker to edger in seconds. Battery life is great! December 31, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great value Great value... Excellent product Light weight, versatile December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice combo purchase of edger and hedge trimmer I bought this edger with a battery, and with a 24" hedge trimmer without a battery. I like that the battery from the edger, which is bigger, fits both, the edger and the trimmer (they are both 24V). The battery lasts to edge ~200 yards and ~6 big hedges. So it suffices to do my yard, even if the hedges and edges are overgrown and need lots of tending. I also like the edger rests on a roller when doing edging - it makes the edge job more accurate. Even if you run out of battery, you can recharge it for ~30 minutes while doing something else. These are more expensive than the corded or gas-driven tools. However, it's worth it, keeping in mind how cleanly they work, and hat you don't have to mix gas and oil, pull power cords, or pull cords to start the tools. October 20, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great machine for medium-duty work Unbelievably easy to assemble and use. Battery operated weed whackers have historically been terrible, but not anymore. Every gas-powered device we have in our garage takes a tremendous amount of maintenance, and a gas trimmer takes a few moments to start up. This battery-operated one has shown me that if all you have to do is throw a battery pack on and you can be trimming in 10 seconds, that I trim WAY more often, and never hesitate to pick the machine up and quickly zap a small area. That alone is worth the price of admission on this trimmer, and it's the best-rated battery operated one out there. Buy it. May 12, 2015
