Not really, it's kind of a gimmick. I took mine off and found the trimmer much easier to use. That said, I love this trimmer.

TrailMoose, the best way I'd describe whether it works well, is that I'd rather have it than not, but "works well" would be subjective to what you are expecting. It does not shoot the debris away, but with your input, it will be helpful in sweeping it away. Hope that makes sense!

It kinda gets in the way sometimes. But its removable too. I guess the idea is to get the cut branches to the ground, instead of stuck in the hedge. I didn't notice much difference with the HedgeSweep.

Answer:
Well enough. It's certainly a considerable asset. But the extent of clearance of cuttings depends not on the sweeper but the density of the foliage. When I trim across the tops of my rhodies, many of the cuttings remain on the plants because there is no way for them to drop below. When trimming along the sides, the cuttings fall to the ground.

Home Depot sells this trimmer in two ways. One with the battery and charger, the other with out the battery and charger. The second option is for people who already have a 40V Ryobi product such as a trimmer or blower.
So if it comes with the battery, it comes with the charger.

I am overpowered with blackberry bushes and cannot figure out a way to cut them back so that I can attack their root system. Is this a viable tool for this task? I was told if I move the hedger back and forth until I get them down almost to ground level, this would be the way to do this job with this hedger. Has anyone ever done this? Would it get tangled up instead?

I had a similar situation and it has worked well for me. I've been impressed with the cutting power. Holding up high gets a little tiresome as i start at the top and work my way down to avoid a chain link fence. Not a showstopper though and it works fast. Great not to have to manage a power cord and avoid trimming it as well. :)

If the bushes are viney and tangly, like a rose bush or ivy vines, the hedge trimmer can be used for demolition! Usually shears are used to trim these types, so that raggedy edges on the plant are not left for infection from bacteria. Alternatively, if you are willing to risk it, use the hedge trimmer for demo, then come back with shears to clean it up. If you want to get to the root to dig it up, just hedge it down to the base on one side, and start digging it up. No need to hedge the whole thing if you are digging it up, you can use the remaining plant to help pull it out of the ground. (Using gloves, or double gloves if there's thorns.)
If your hedge gets tangled up, keep hedging. It should work. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is my first powered hedge trimmer. I cannot believe I didn't buy it years ago. Last night, in the few short hours between getting home from work and dusk, I got all the hedges and shrubs trimmed. I live on Guam, where things grow like they're in, well, a jungle. This alone would have been months of "plugging away at it" weekend work, at which point I'd need to start again. Bonus points -- the lots on two sides of my fence-line are filled with Elephant Grass. I've never found an efficient way to keep it under control. I spent 45 minutes with this little beast, and cleared it farther back than I have ever had it before, no muss, no fuss, no machete. After about three hours run time, it still had 1/2 charge on the battery. I was tempted to save a couple bucks by getting a 20 volt model. The power and battery endurance make me very glad I didn't. Note -- the 40 volt battery is BIG and somewhat heavy. If you have only light trimming to do and are of small stature you might want to consider the 20 volt model. If you're a big guy like me, and have a lot of heavy brush, spring for this baby. October 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by For the price. This Hedge Trimmer does the job that I needed it for. The nice thing about this Hedge Trimmer is that you can uses it for a bit before the battery runs out. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE IT!!! LOVE THIS TRIMMER IT CUT OUR TRIMMING TIME BY ALMOST HALF. BATTERY HELD UP VERY GOOD. CUT BETTER THAN OUR ELECTRIC TRIMMERS October 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product!! This is a great trimmer. It's slightly top-heavy due to the battery location, but is still easily maneuverable. The 24 inch cutting bar and wide teeth make trimming easy and quick. I've not yet run the battery down, so don't know what total run-time will be. I definitely recommend it for homeowner level trimming. October 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by excellent trimmer Very easy to operate. Does a great job on small brush, thorn bushes, vines, etc. Excellent for trimming shrubs and bushes. October 4, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, very pleased I purchased both the 40 volt Ryobi blower and this hedge trimmer (both with batteries-for a back-up when necessary). On my first use I went for an hour and a half (1 1/2 hours) on only one (1) battery charge. I did the trimming and then used the blower for clean-up, didn't even use the back-up battery this time, however on bigger jobs I probably will. Loved it and my wife in particular who says she will now use the blower due to it's cordless convenience and power. Only time will tell if it is durable. So far, so good! September 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Purely awesome. Easily cut branches up to and a little bigger than 3/4". Great addition to the 40v tools that I already had. Battery lasted 2 hours while trimming the bushes yesterday (which hasn't been done in 18 months, so, it had plenty to do) Has plenty of power. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. September 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Trimmer Very easy to charge battery and install. Trimmer works beautifully. I'm completely satisfied. September 27, 2016
