Ready right out of the box, as long as you have the battery. I had the battery and charger from my Ryobi mower and string trimmer. The best thing about the hedge trimmer is it hardly uses any battery. I put it through some branches or limbs up to about an inch thick and it didn't really have any trouble. It is easy to operate and not that heavy. When you factor in the cost of the battery and charger, I am not sure how cost effective it comes out to be. I got the charger and two batteries when I got the mower. So far, I recommend everything from Ryobi I have.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by AALI This hedge trimmer has very smooth operation, I order this product couple of weeks ago.
In this season most of the shrubs are already trimmed, but I am using this time for small job like dwarf Nandino & small shrubs. It worked very nice. It is sturdy and compact. I bought this one because same company I have used other products with 40 volt lithium battery & it worked very good.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by linkmodo Fantastic! Powerful, and Clean for the environment too!
We bought the 40v trimmer from Ryobi, so I also bought this to trim the hedge on our side of the neighbor's surinam cherry hedge.
The battery pack from ryobi's 40v line is usable by all other 40v accessories so attaching the battery is no problem.
The hedge trimmer come pre-assembled, there are 2 attachments, one is the teeth guarde, one is the debris remover which you attach to top of the trimmer to help cleaning out cut debris.
I fired it up for the first run and it is smooth and powerful.
Instruction said you have to regularly oil the blades to keep them from rusting, and also to sharpen them when they gets dull, so be sure to do that to maintain the tool in it's optimal performance.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by westcoast Can't beat this cordless trimmer
I needed a trimmer that would help me keep the grass and reeds growing along the canal behind my house that didn't involve running an extension cord across the water.
I made the mistake of first buying an inexpensive light cordless trimmer (not Ryobi) it wasn't strong enough to cut through the thickets and the battery would run down to quickly. Since I already own a Ryobi electric string trimmer and Ryobi electric lawn mower, it wasn't expensive to just by the 24" hedge trimmer without a battery or charger...I already had two chargers and three batteries, so I gave it a try...WOW, it's fantastic, one sweep of the trimmer and the weeds are trimmer down liked a hedge.
I have used it heavily to trim them down, walked across the cannel to trim from the water side, how did I live without this.
Keeping them trimmed down is no longer a headache, my neighbors want me to trim theirs down as well... and why not, it's a breeze.
All my trimming and the battery still showed 3/4 charge still.

I bought this without a battery because I already had one from the weed whacker. Normally I trim with a corded trimmer, but I was tired of dragging 200' of cord around. This trimmer is just wonderful. It tore through branches and never missed a beat. I ran it fairly constant for close to an hour and still had about half of the charge left. It was well balanced and I did not suffer any fatigue or hand numbness even after an hours use. Great product!

Was a bit concerned about a battery powered hedge trimmer. Have been using gas models for years, but grew weary of the noise, fumes, hard starting, etc... The Ryobi 40V effectively cleared the hedges around my home including some particularly "stalky" variants around the property. Battery life was not an issue consuming about 1/2 of the battery (per the battery indicator) during a two hour work session (trimmer not running that entire time). I'm very pleased with initial results.

I'm really hooked on the newer Ryobi products. I first bought the 40 volt string trimmer. I have an acre and a half with quite a few trees and bushes, on a full charge I can do all of it but not edging the driveway and front curbs which is fine by me. I then bought the Blower (without the battery) it works great, I have 2 garages, back patio area and driveway curbing again (after I mow). It will do it all but you can't run it at full speed. It sucks the battery down pretty fast but is a great blower.
The hedge trimmers battery life is much like the string trimmer. I have around 10-12 bigger shrubs that are around 5-6ft tall. Did all of them and the battery life didn't even go down one light! (Battery has 4 lights if you don't own one)
REALLY IMPRESSED WITH ALL THESE PRODUCTS.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MikeInMI A really fine trimmer
I have never trimmed my shrubbery before. I always paid someone. But now that I am retired, I thought I should give it a try.
This is my third 40V tool. Since I had two other 40V devices that came with batteries and chargers, I didn't need to get the battery and charger this time, which saved on the cost.
I was concerned about the weight of the tool -- wondering if it would grow heavy in my arms, but honestly, this tool is well balanced so it worked out well.
I was able to borrow an 18-inch trimmer from my son, but it didn't have enough reach for my large shrubs so the 24-inch blades were nice. It cut well and easily and a single battery let me do all of my shrubs and I have a decent amount of them (sorry I don't have any timings to share).
I have a good number of Ryobi tools with their lithium batteries. 18v power tools and now these 40V yard tools. I'm very happy with the tools and the battery performance.
