I had the same problem.
Press the release by reaching in as far as you can. The hinge point is on the end toward you and it will not release unless you put the force on it ~ 1.5 inches in from pivot point.

There is a button beneath the front of the battery pack. Push it up and pull away from the battery socket. It takes a little effort.

Grab the battery from the end and feel for the large locking tab underneath. Press the tab to release and slide the battery out, the same way you remove it from the charger.

That is a great question and I wish it was. For me the one battery will last for several weeks of trimming on hedge and string trimmer. I guess they want you to spend for battery too, maybe the demand is not there. I would have purchased in store if it was available.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 130 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great trimmer and very powerful Going to apply this review to all the related Home Depot products I recently purchased…. After the California drought last year my yard was a disaster. We decided to hire a landscaper to update the front yard, which was a sloped lawn and difficult to water. We created a lower tier for plants/shrubs and the top tier was laid with new sod. I wanted an irrigation controller/timer that was as easy to use as my Nest thermostat. I found the Rachio controller. Great product. I read the online documentation and viewed their website videos... which had me sold. The mobile App is great, easy to install, and gave me the confidence to properly manage my yard. I could tell you about all the cool features, however recommend you to see the videos for yourself on their website. Also, research into rebates from your water agency. They refunded me the full amount. This gave me the confidence to take on the yard maintenance and letting the gardener go. I had a gas mower before and recently borrowed a neighbor’s electronic mower. Both experience led to consider battery powered tools. All research led to the Ryobi 40 volt tools. I wanted the power of electric without the cord. I have not been disappointed. Best features are the compact size, light weight, and the ability to fold down the handles for easy storage. I also need to hedge trimmer and edger/weed eater, so I purchased the compatible Ryobi 40 volt units. TIP: I bought the Ryobi lawnmower with two batteries and the hedge and edger with no battery. For my size yard I can complete the work for two weeks (30 – 50 minutes) on a single battery. I may eventually get the blower which will need the extra battery. Last step to complete the cycle was to feed the lawn… fertilizer. I saw an Ad on TV about the Scotts App. I knew it would promote their products, but figured it was worth at least a season to test. Very easy to enter my lawn size and information. It recommended Scotts Green Max Lawn Food, which promised deep greening in 3 days. I remember looking after 3 days and not noticing that much of a difference. However, after 2 weeks the yard looked great. Very green and growing in thick. It has been 4 weeks and I have to say this is the BEST my lawn has ever looked. Especially the back yard, which was trashed after the drought last year. In January I really considered tearing out the (back) lawn and re-sod. I am glad I waited. I attribute the growth to both the Max Lawn Food and the watering managed by Rachio. Overall… love all the products. Never been happier with my lawn or the way it looks. Hope this helps other who are looking to take on their lawn chores. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Trimmer & Lawn Edger Battery Life is excellent. String advance is unreliable and the line breaks fast. Should have been designed with a thicker string line. About half the time, you have to turn the trimmer over and manually advance the string....which is quite often since the string breaks quite often. May 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Definitely gets the job done Cuts evenly and cleanly thru my hedges. Plenty of power. May 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very powerful trimmer I was surprised at how powerful this tool is, cut through the hedges easily with hardly any battery drain May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Trimmer Use the trimmer once so far so good.. Happy with it's power!! May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rhino 24 in. 40-Volt Lithium-ion Cordless Hedge Trimmer Worked great! Used it for over an hr and only lost one cell on the external battery life indicator. Chewed through all my bushes, shrubs, etc. May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great little chainsaw Surprisingly effective for it's size. Lightweight. Battery lasts a good amount of time. Very useful. April 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This trimmer is a beast This trimmer is a beast. Got it to replace a battery operated 18V Black & Decker that I have been using in the past. Same job with the B&D took 3 batteries. I say same job but it really was not because the B&D would have never in a million years hogged through the branches that I was hacking through with this Ryobi. So in reality I probably did twice as much. Yard has not looked as good after spring cleanup in a good few years. And after finishing I used the same battery (without a recharge) to trim trees with the 40v pole saw and then put it in my 40v blower to clean off my sidewalks. I am no tree hugger, but unless you own an "estate" then there is no reason to go gas any more. I can only imagine where the battery tools will go in the future. No gas, no mess, no ethanol clogged carb. This machine is for serious hedge trimming. Two batteries and a charger could easily keep you trimming non stop because the Li-ion battery will recharge quicker than you can run it down. April 26, 2016
