I had the same problem.
Press the release by reaching in as far as you can. The hinge point is on the end toward you and it will not release unless you put the force on it ~ 1.5 inches in from pivot point.

That is a great question and I wish it was. For me the one battery will last for several weeks of trimming on hedge and string trimmer. I guess they want you to spend for battery too, maybe the demand is not there. I would have purchased in store if it was available.

No. If you want an 18 inch cordless trimmer then you need to get an 18 volt Ryobi trimmer. Its actually a very good trimmer the 18 volt 18 inch model.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi fan adds another 40 volt tool to his arsenal Ryobi's 40 volt 24" hedge trimmer has provided me with another way to speed up my weekly gardening tasks. It is powerful as my previous corded hedge trimmer but without the need for finding a nearby electrical outlet or extension cord long enough. This makes my weekend yard chores of trimming and cleaning up my large bushes and hedges no longer as dangerous since I have cut into my extension cords while trimming bushes more than once. I now have a Ryobi 40 volt battery powered yard tool family consisting of their 16" lawn mower, string trimmer, leaf blower, and the great 24" hedge trimmer; all making my yard upkeep speedy, quiet, and almost at zero cost. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great tool Works great and battery lasted long enough for me to finish all my hedges. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hedge trimmer Great product, fast delivery, no gas to mix which is awesome . July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi 40volt hedge trimmer I really like how this trimmer worked, when it worked. Not having to deal with cords or gas was nice. I trimmed about 100 feet of forsythias and it did a great job. Now for the bad news. I have had numerous problems with Ryobi's 40 volt batteries. I have had FIVE show "Defective" on the charge in less than two months. Sadly I could not get any answers to why I had some many problems with the batteries. I returned everything. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for residential applications This trimmer works great! I finished the entire house (lots of shrubs and bushes) on a single charge. Trimmer cuts all the same size branches as my electric. The only difference between this battery operated trimmer and the electric models, is you can go quite as fast... But in reality that's probably safer and prevents you from cutting a extension cord or yourself. Highly recommend the ryobi trimmer June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent hedge trimmer Since I already bought the trimmer and leaf blower, I had a couple batteries and bought the tool-only version. If you already have batteries, this thing is an excellent value for the price. It is a bit heavy, but it's super powerful. I have easily cut through hedge branches up to about 1/2" so far. I don't even have hedges with thick enough branches to test the 3/4" capacity of this trimmer! I also really like that plastic 'brush remover' thing. It works well to brush the clippings away and not leave them stuck in the hedge. May 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Powerful last a good amount of time.good price. Easy to use July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT TOO. EASY TO USE AND VERY POWERFUL I've owned Ryobi tools for years and find them tough and reliable. I wasn't sure about the cordless lawn items because of the power demands. Fortunately I have two batteries and that does the job without worries or interruptions. One battery can do it depending on how heavy the job is. Good Luck July 19, 2016
